One of the previous commenters said that this song has his favorite chord progressions of all time. I, too, love the chord progressions of this song. This song is irresistible.
It took Chad like two weeks to learn that.
Who’s Chad?
Wolverine Smith from the movie
Jason Teqja Right. That’s from the movie too. When the bass player said, “it took Chad two weeks to learn that, Lenny said, “Chad, who’s Chad?” As if they forgot about him already, or knew they found their new drummer and want to forget Chad. Watch that scene again and you’ll hear Lenny ask who is Chad?
Wolverine Smith oh my bad
Adam Schlesinger was a fantastic songwriter (RIP Covid). Definitely check out the rest of his work with Fountains of Wayne. Watched this movie again last night. Awesome movie and amazing song. It's SUCH a great song because they play it over and over in the movie and you never get tired of it. Thanks for the great lesson. Can't get this snappy little number out of my head.
I AM SPARTACUS!!!!!
Awesome! Love it! Thanks for sharing!
YES!
Its about time I learned how to play this!
Thank you!
That tone and guitar are awesome! Great lesson!
First timer with you here Jimmy..I'm a 54 year old guitarist and continue to learn as often as I can... your lessons are by far the easiest to learn hands down...thanks keep em coming while I check out your back catalogue...btw..however fictional. The Wonders (One-ders lol) are one if my favorite bands and the film is in my Top Five..once again thanks
Who else remembers the oneders ? They were big in the 60s !
Thanks for the tuto
Love the sound of a Tele!!! Great video dude!!! Thanks for sharing!! Blessings from Uruguay
So well explained, great teacher
I just played a little bit of this; and so far it's been fairly easy. Excellent job and thanks for posting this! And yes, I did subscribe. 😉
Great video bro. Been wanting to learn this song, and you made it EASY. Thanks!!
Great job! You have a great way of teaching. Subscribed! Thanks
Wow, didnt realize the song had that many chords. Good job! As for one hit wonders... The Castaways "Liar, Liar" (though I think there were other singles.)
Great tutorial. Love this song!
Excellent video. I love the song and had no idea so many chords (that I didn't know but want to now) were in the song There are many more chords than the three chords everybody says are in a "typical" rock & roll or country song. Love that you have tabs showing the cord you're demonstrating. I felt like I was in the room with you instead of watching a video.
Thanx a lot🔥
Great explanation 💪🏽
Terrific job with the song! Our band is adding it to our play list!
I love your tutorials. You break everything up so it’s easy to learn and doesn’t seem overwhelming. Thank you man. Love this song.
Excellent lesson and format. Appreciate the time stamps. You got a new subscriber
Great stuff Jimmy loved the movie
You Rock Dude!!
Great! Thanks from Mallorca, Spain.
Excellent breakdown, Jimmy! Thanks for sharing it! About one hit wonders, not sure if it qualifies, but soundtrack hits, such as Footloose, are among my favorite ones. Keep up the good work, Jimmy!
Outstanding lesson. Thank you so much!
Thank you!
Great Great tutorial! Slow and patient. That's the way to do it. Please start with individual string tuning. You clarified much of the mystery.
Now . A request ; Louie louie by the Kingsmen . Can't wait.
Slowed down version of the verse riff @ 8:00
Thanks for your good work.
just watched a different tutorial on this song. Yours is the best! Thanks
Thank you! Enjoy
Glad that you put this one out...I figured it out a few years ago...........was wondering what that last chord was as I always played it as a Emaj7 . . . . . .tks ! ! !
Excellent lesson!👏👏👏👏👏👏 thank you!
Thanks for watching and sharing!
Great lesson!
Thanks for watching and sharing!
That was great, all the pieces I was looking for. You make it look so easy, I’m sure I’ll get this one soon, thanks again. Ah ya I also liked the other wonders songs, and would love to learn them.
Thanks for checking out the lesson and leaving your feedback Steven! I look forward to hearing how learning this one goes!
I started listening through the movies soundtrack again. I'll have to work on some of the other tunes!
The Oneders.
“You’re the Wonders now, with a “W””
Lenny “ ...As in, I wonder what happened to the Oneders.”
The o need ersssss it’s the wonders with an o !!
Nice Tutorial
Excellent job! You pretty much nailed the chords, the positions and the tone required for this tune and put it together in a smooth, coherent fashion. Outstanding!
It seems a bit weird to say this, but TTYD has one of my favorite chord progressions of all-time, and I've been listening to popular music for well over 60 years. It's a 'Oneder-ful' tune!
I was with you nearly 100% until you got to the last chord, and that's provoked a comment. I'm hearing an Emaj7, not an E6. I play it with the root on the 7th fret, A string for ease of fingering, but think it's in a different position in the recording.
Just my humble opinion...
Right on! First of all thanks for the commendation on the lesson. Second of all, I appreciate your humble opinion. I always used to play the song live and finish it with that E6. I ended up basing the lesson on that, but after I finished the video that last chord started bothering me. I agree with it being an Emaj7.
I just checked a few clips of Mike Viola playing it and it looks like he uses a closed Cmaj7 shape with the root (4th finger) at the 7th fret. I like the sound of it.
Thanks again for your excellent comment!
@@JimmyParagalloGuitar Well, now you've sent me into the RUclips vortex, looking at alternate versions! Saw a couple of the Mike Viola videos, and -- yep, he does play it the way you described. At one time, that would have been my default for the Emaj7, also, but I've learned a couple of other fingerings in recent years.
I play some parts of TTYD a little differently than you, but it's a 'preference' thing, not an 'accuracy' thing. One difference comes on the 4 single notes that precede the Emaj7. You play the final E on the 6th string, where it looks/sounds like in the very first version that The Oneders play in the movie. I play that E an octave up, on 4th string, 2nd fret, with my index finger. Then it's a simple matter to leave the index finger there, and add a mini-barre with my pinkie on the 4th fret, strings 3, 2 & 1. That makes for a really nice Emaj7, with (IMO) a cleaner, more resonant sound than either version higher up the neck.
Real fun discussing this with you -- I'm a fan! (subscriber...)
I dunno, UnpleasantChuck, you sound pretty pleasant to me.... :)
I'm not a musician, but this song has some of my favorite chord progressions of all time. Was so pleased to learn that you, a musician, also love the chord progressions of this song and consider them your favorite chord progressions of all time. I'm in good company!
much love from india, your voice explaining is so tender, goes to tell much about you my brother :) God Bless
WONDERFUL! I gotta go!
!!! Greetings from Montréal, Québec, Canada !!! Watching a video about the making of the movie 'That thing you do' I came accross your website and decided to register. I am sur I shall benefit from your knowledge and experience !!! Keep up the good work !!! Stay healthy, Cheers !!!
Hmmm...clearly you need to play more between the 9th and 12th frets 😄 Good video!
Thank you
Thanks for watching and sharing!
gracias desde ARGENTINA
Lots of nice comments for this video
Can you do one for the wonders "Dance with me tonight " There is already a few videos for the chorus...but none for the lead guitar...hope it's not too tall of an order..Thanks I like what you have done.Hope to see it ...and the solo part to be taught.
Thank you for breaking it down. This song is one of them I really want to learn and master to play on my Gretch. Now if I can find a couple of others to play the song with me.
Great to hear! Enjoy playing it! What kind of Gretsch do you have?
@@JimmyParagalloGuitar I have a Gretsch 3135 Historic Series. From what ive found there were only about 1500 of them made.
Pretty sick. I recently got a silver falcon from gretsch. Sadly I'm not a big fan of it's playability even though it's the most amazing sounding guitar EVER and has looks that make you happy that you're alive to witness such a beautiful thing. It's big, A pound or two heavier than what I'm used to, and I can't play high up on the neck as easily as I can with my fenders.
I mostly play on my fenders and music mans but gretsch does a great job even on their lower models. Got a cheap bass from them for only 200 and it's actually VERY good.
Holy crap you're good at showing folks how to play. Not once in the whole 20ish mins did you have to stop and think or correct a failed demonstration. It was basically perfect and thanks to you I got the song down. Singing it and playing it is impossible for me because I totally suck at singing and playing but yeah boss. This was great : )
Thank you! Also would you mind telling me the details on that tele? It looks pretty sick. I got a 72 thinline american reissue. It's really freakin good : )
Thanks a lot for saying and I’m glad that it was a useful video lesson for you!
Awesome to hear about your Tele...I just posted a video this past week about mine. Quick overview of it and some sound demos. You can find it on my channel page...
RIP Andy.
Check out "Lies" by the Knickerbockers.
Terrific! I've played guitar since, oh, about 1956 (10 years old). But... in all these videos of 'how to play.......' no one bothers to put the camera over their left shoulder so we can see the neck and strings and chords, as WE see them!
Can you put the camera up there so we can see the guitar as WE see it?
I love it when you show the chord fingering on the left side of the screen. That's EXACTLY how I always play those chords!
Great lesson! How about another from That Thing You Do!
Thanks a lot! Great suggestion!
Have not seen new tutorials from you for a long while. Are you still doing that?
Very Buddy Holly.
Not sure from what Genre should I put it into. Song was made in 1996 for a movie depicting the music of 1960's. Should I put this along with some Beatles in my playlist?
Aww you shoulda worn shades 😎
Hey Jimmy and other Commenters...I Have a Vox AC 30. How do you dial it up to get that Mersey Beat type sound?
How the heck do you bar the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string on the B chord with the ring finger without muting the e string?
what pedals dou you use for this sound?
Nice vintage tele, real or reissue?
I prefer the re-recorded version the Jimmy did with the herdsman! Recently saw a herdsman reunions show, the feature Wolfman on bass guitar!
What is Jimmy playing lead or rhythm; same for Lenny?
Jimmy plays rythm lenny plays lead
nope I am sure that you are incorrect there ! nope the song does not end on E6 ! the song actually ends on a dreamy E Major 7th ! am sure of it ! :) Have just researched it out
What is the final chord the song ends on
The final chord is Emaj7
I corrected the ending in this lesson: ruclips.net/video/Lm0Q4cb7fQ8/видео.html
Thanks for watching!
Cool pickups on that Tele but that relic'ing is tacky as hell, but hey that's roadworn Fenders for you I guess
One of my favorite one-hit wonders: “Popsicles and Icicles” by the Murmaids ( written by David Gates).
jimmy, the last chord is a B6, not an E 6. try it you'll see. otherwise, great
Everyone knows that Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters were better than the Oneders. :D lol
They were a bunch of no-talent hacks, except for the saxophone player.😉
The Chord-vettes..."you know...like the chords in our songs".
After i saw this movie I went out and bought a Rickenbacker 12 string!
Great movie with a lot of Beatles experiences in it.
Sucker. Lol
Huuu. What is Jimmy doing?
Last chord is not an E6. It is an E Maj7.
You’re exactly right...had to make that correction in this video: ruclips.net/video/Lm0Q4cb7fQ8/видео.html
Thanks Tim!
Excellent! But... on a Telecaster? You need a good Rickenbacker! Oh... and one of these years SOME guitar player will put the camera over his left shoulder so we can see the fingers on the neck and frets the way WE see them! I've gotta stand on my head to learn how to play all the songs on You Tube with camera in front!
Haha gotta play what we got 😂 I actually just played a Ric for the first time recently. A buddy has been kind enough to let me borrow it for a bit. It's in one video so far, but I'll play it some more on the channel before it has to go back.
Thanks for watching and sharing
When you do all these stops it's hard to follow the continuity of the song you start to show one verse then another verse then your upside down you all over the damn place and people forget where we are , hard to put the song together
Songs 55 years ago didn't have that many chords.
Good point
Jimmy tested at genius levels!
What did you do , you sand down your fretboard in strategic spots to make it look like your a real lead player
E SIXTH?? It's a Maj7!!
You are absolutely right Chip! That's been a topic of conversation here in the comments. Addressed in this video: ruclips.net/video/Lm0Q4cb7fQ8/видео.html
Thanks for sharing
Cool song! Clean your fretboard...
RIP RICK
?
Woaa woaa slow it down. It's not polka. It's rock n roll
You sound like Tom cruise. That’s all.
That fretboard is gross. I got a raging skin fungus just watching this video.
Excellent tutorial, very well done! Please tell me you didn't deliberately "relic" that Tele! Relicing guitars is for posers, not talented people like you! Relicing is earned, not created. JMHO. I played a Gretsch Chet Atkins Nashville on tour for years and was proud of the fact that I never allowed it to get boogered up, but if it had, it would have at least been honestly earned boogering!
Why stop and start talking ! just play the damn thing and we'll figure it out
Intro stolen right from the Cars, "my best friend's girlfriend". Sheesh! go to court!
STOP talking
STOP talking
