Blimey, I thought I was the only one that got nervous. I think I get nervous because I’m worried that I might be taking a step back with my progress on the next run. I find with my running, it’s often 2 steps forward and 1 step back and after the euphoria of a good run the day before, I’m worried that it’ll be back a step next run. Also I know a hard run will hurt like a fu£ker, so that plays on my mind too. I guess there aren’t many things in life, where you know it’s going to hurt so bad yet we still dive straight in head first. Cracking video Matt, great sessions!!!
Thanks Dai. Yeah it’s a strange desire to go and do something you know will hurt. I think it’s one of the things that makes endurance athletes different. We like to suffer. Make sure you do some really easy runs where you just go slow and listen to your body between hard sessions and then you will be fresh and ready to push on in your next session. 👊
1. I love Twin Town. 2. You are a tremendous runner 3. You are more than a little handsome 4. That American accent intro .... priceless 5. "That dog hates me" ..... even more priceless 6. I hope these comments haven't scared you
Kudos to your efforts Matt. Happy to see you're fit and healthy for your goal pace. Your treadmill sessions look so long and hard, i can hardly run on a treadmill. I find it really boring. Btw, I am glad you put up your video on hard session. I was about to give up my interval training for this week but now i will give it another try. Happy Running and keep being awesome! 👍
Thank you so much for your support Sandeep. I really appreciate you engaging with each video. I’m glad you enjoyed. I quite enjoy the treadmill. For easy runs I watch RUclips or something I like on Netflix or BBC iPlayer. For hard runs I listen to some motivating music and just hang on in there. Good luck with your interval session. Go be great 👍 👊💪.
I get the same feeling, always feel apprehensive before a session but absolutely love running fast and end up enjoying them more. I think it's just the worry it's one of those rare sessions that don't go to plan and still hurt, and either way you know you're going to be hurting the rest of the day because of it. Keep up the great content!
I agree. I’m not sure if I’m worried about it not going to plan or the discomfort but I do enjoy them so I’m trying to reframe how I think about them. Thanks 👍
Perhaps. I don’t think you have to be nervous even if you are going to work hard but that doesn’t stop me from getting nervous. Yes, I agree that you need to polarise training but I don’t think you need to hammer yourself to the max in every session. Hold a little back and be ready to bring it all on race day. 👊
I’m pleased with the runs but a little disappointed with the volume. However, there’s no rush and I’d rather be a tad cautious if I don’t feel right than power on and get injured or ill.
These are really cool to watch... Nice seeing a runner at your level with the goods and bads of a training block. Like you I get nervous and almost psyched out before a hard session, even though I know I can hold and and also can't stand easy runs.. To the point that they tend to be too fast.
I’m following a Stryd half marathon plan and the faster day sessions always worry me. I end up over thinking them, and takes me longer to get out the door. Crazy really, afterwards always feel better for getting it done. Agree in a group or at a race the same pace would feel easier, but alone it always feel tougher. Post a race I always have more confidence about my speed as time elapses I start questioning my own pace more and more. I have the Proviz gillet and hat, quite like it and it’s super reflective
Dorney Lake 13th December 😉 5k, 10k or Half Marathon distance available. Plus you get to run around the 2012 Olympic location used for the rowing events. Loops seem to be the way forward with your Lydney Lake time trials too.
I'm terrible with accents! I was born in England, but I'm part Welsh, so I try and do a Welsh accent sometimes, but it doesn't sound close to be being Welsh! Performance nerves are common for everyone from every sport! I competed in Football and Rugby growing up and I used to get really nervous! As an adult, I've been a Martial Arts competitor and I get performance anxiety. Getting hurt doesn't worry me! People from all sports at all levels have these issues! Even Mike Tyson said something along the lines of "You'd have to be crazy to get in the ring and fight another man and not be nervous!"
Silverstone two weeks on Sunday Matt. All distances from 5k to a half mara. Pancake flat and the way you're training you'll probably do a lap in a similar time to what Lewis Hamilton does in that Mercedes!
Great week of training again Matt, Shame about the hit in volume but better to be cautious when you're not feeling right than potentially push and make things worse!
Totally agree Laura. I’m happy at my decision looking back. When I woke up Saturday and felt totally normal it made me question of there had actually been anything wrong and I started to think perhaps I had just been a tad lazy or complacent. However, in hindsight it was the right call because I was able to complete the week and maintain the consistency. Thanks for watching and showing your support. I really appreciate it.
Dunno if it's what you're looking for, or if it will be too far a trip. But Silverstone has a 5k, 10k and Half Marathon on November 15th. Looks fairly likely to go ahead as in a "Covid Secure" location being are a race track, no spectators allowed etc (unfortunately), but should be a fairly fast course weather permitting. I'm up there for the 1/2 marathon. Ps, I know what you're saying about getting nervous for sessions. I'm similar but I am always happy/ready for intervals, It takes me a while to get out the door for a tempo run though, can't explain why but am on board with what you're saying!
Thanks for the heads up on Silverstone. Looks like a good one. I think I might get involved. Tempo runs at the right intensity require a lot of focus and some good mental strength. Intervals hurt more imo but tempo runs are definitely a challenge.

Tom Folan I’m extremely keen for Speedway if it goes ahead. Would be the perfect race if conditions are good. I’m also keeping my eye on Telford if it goes ahead.
Matthew McConaughy felt that one. Hahaha, anyway I get a bit nervous before hard sessions as well. I’ve got a local interval session group and our last meet of the year was last night and we did a mile time trial... I was fkn nervous all day haha. Especially since I’m not a speed-focused runner, having done 3 marathons in my first 2 years of running. It worked out ok, but it was weird feeling those jitters lol

If you are not nervous or anxious on your hard days, you are not pushing yourself enough. Easy days very easy, hard days hard.

@@TheWelshRunner wise move, especially seeing as we’ve not got any real races on the horizon. Without my channel running would of just got boring
Great vid, always love the intro it is just so good.
Thanks Luke. Most of the intro is from races, hopefully I get to race again soon and can have some more exciting content.
Solid week with all the right sessions 💪🏾! Twin Town... A classic film!

Nice honest update mate! You not keen for Speedway 10k in January? Searching high and low for a fast 5k/10k at the minute!

You should do a video on what you eat in a day ?
Great idea. I’ll jot the idea down and try and get it filmed soon. Thanks for the suggestion.

Twin town . That rain sounds rough, get yourself back to the ponderosa fella
I think everybody gets nervous before a hard interval session your going to be in severe pain and there is no way around it.

Yes 👍. Winner winner.
