During a band interview in Fait Accompli, the interviewer asks Murphy if he is now a member of the band, and he says "yes". Mark King loved him and his style, so if he hadn't passed away, he would have definitely stayed with band, probably for as long as the Gould brothers. Murphy wasn't with Level 42 as a session player, it was his full-time gig, unlike Darryl Jones/Rolling Stones.

Again, regarding Mark's voice, it was probably a day after a show, and his voice may have not yet been warmed up, he probably had not yet done a lot of talking that day. Or maybe he had a cold. The lower, gruff quality of his voice, more than usual, suggests recent heavy vocal activity or cold.

Regarding the speaking voice, I'm sure it was the morning after a show, and that's not the norm for him. As you know, when he sings, he gives it his all.

@cedarjet707 What an odd post. The reason he only played on one album was because he died!

Regarding "changes" in Mark's voice, every person's voice changes in 30-something years in terms of quality/texture, even if sublty. I think Mark has become a technically better singer, and better uses his upper range. Also he has stopped drinking heavily, and perhaps in doing so has halted or reversed some damage done in earlier years by less effective vocal technique and alcohol consumption.
