    Kevin Max was my favorite part of DC Talk. I love his vocal style and it was a major influence on me musically. But now hearing his post-DCT stuff I see that he's so much MORE than just one of the guys in DCT. Listen to the lyrics and hear what he's saying. There is so much depth and creativity there. My only regret is that I wasn't aware of this until recently.

Like God held auditions to find the right voices to sing together. I think most of their songs are just about perfect in every way. • @johnulcer
      @johnulcer 3 года назад +1

      I've been a fan of Kevin since I was a kid listening to dcTalk and am 32 now. One thing I've noticed watching some of his live performances over the years is that he often has awkward body language / stage presence, I think he's just a bit quirky and not super comfortable in front of audiences? He puts his hands in his pockets a lot which is kind of awkward for a performer. Such a gifted vocalist though. I think Stereotype Be is a beautiful album, I just wish he'd linked up with some better producers and songwriters over the years as I think the returns have diminished somewhat with some of his other work since then. I would love to hear him fully embrace his Bowie influence...imagine what Brian Eno could have done with his voice back in the '00s.

    This dude is just weird. Vocally amazing. But his thought process and world view are destructive at best.

    • @johnulcer
      @johnulcer 3 года назад

      What makes you say that?

    • @catharsisecho
      @catharsisecho 3 года назад +3

      People like you really, really bother me. You should have stopped at "Vocally amazing." The dude is a singer, and this is a video of him singing songs. I have no idea why you would think that your evaluation of his personality etcetera is apropos in this context. Are your criticisms religious in nature? I don't recall "weirdness" being a property that has theological significance, but I suppose I might have missed that chapter of the Summa Theologica.
      As far as his worldview and whatever you meant by "thought process" being destructive goes, again: a singer, singing. Out of all the musicians who have recorded and performed in the past 50 years, this is the guy who strikes you as weird and destructive? For someone that lived in Los Angeles for longer than 30 seconds I find Kevin's worldview anodyne and, honestly, a little boring.
      No, it's your worldview that strikes me as weird. Clearly you had this opinion of the guy before you watched this video. Yet, here you are. You either specifically searched for Kevin, or came across the video and chose to watch it. Either weird and destructive are qualities you enjoy, perhaps more than you're consciously aware of, or you came to the video so you could self-righteously gossip in the comments. I think your statements say a lot more about your character than they do about Kevin's.
      I don't go to the doctor and ask for a quote to remodel my kitchen. I don't call the fire department to order pizza. When my power goes out I don't report it to the daycare, I don't expect my kid's teacher to fix my car, and I don't go to singers when I need spiritual guidance.
      You want to know something? He's the guy in the video, and you're the guy in the comment section. Think about that for a second. I saw DC Talk in an auditorium in Champaign, Illinois in 1995. That was 26 years ago. Yeah, some of those years have went by entirely without me thinking about the group or Kevin. But 26 years on, and here I am, occasionally thinking about dude enough to search for a video or two. What have you built that's lasted a quarter of a century? Maybe you should try building something, instead of trying (and failing) to tear something down.
      Oh, btw, I remember reading that Kevin was adopted out of a pretty bad situation. Individuals who experience trauma in early childhood sometimes develop mannerisms that seem strange or disjointed to others. I have no idea what you find so weird about Kevin, and I have no knowledge about the dude's life beyond what I just said. I'm merely suggesting that unless you have any actual knowledge of a person's life experience, the wise thing to do would be to give empathy a try.

      @@catharsisecho Weight and awkwardness? That's definitely not it. His "Exvangelical" move is bizarre. He believes in Jesus but doesn't want to be a part of the "Church". Divisive. And we all know why. It's simple and you can hear it in his recent music and read it in his 2020 tweets. Politics. He's allowed politics to dictate his faith. • @jerryandkerri
      @jerryandkerri 3 года назад

      @@johnulcer he is quirky. His last album lost me entirely. I no longer really understand or relate to or even find it musically tasteful. He had limited his audience and alienated himself so for from the norms that he's become irrelevant. Not saying that as an opinion. The statistics show a huge disconnect. Look at how often his music is played on spotify or pandora. He is so talented but something is off.

    • @johnulcer
      @johnulcer 3 года назад

      @@jerryandkerri Outside of dcTalk his albums never gained mainstream popularity so I'm not sure what his Spotify or Pandora numbers would reveal beyond the fact that he's remained a cult figure. It's not like he was famous and made weird music and lost his audience. He was never popular after dctalk broke up. He's also approaching into his 50s now and traditionally it's rare for someone to suddenly achieve mainstream success so late in their career. I do thinkhe's struggled with consistently good production and songwriting since Stereotype Be though -- that album is a masterpiece imo, but I haven't found too many songs of his recently that floored me.
