I have been a fan of Sam Phillips when she was called Leslie in the 80s. Her first mind-blowing pop-folk album for me was The Turning, still one of my favorites. I lost touch with her work and then stumbled on her again watching The Gilmore Girls. I had a whole set of albums to catch up with and fall in love with. She has always had a powerful voice, powerful songwriting and a perspective that is always worth hearing. She has been central in my musical education. Thank you, Sam, for persisting.

The Indescribable Wow was amazing. Saw her live on that tour. Small venue in Chicago...her voice was so clear and powerful. And her lyrics have always been off the charts good.
I knew her through MTV's 120 Minutes back in the 90's. I fell hypnotized by "I Need Love", a couple of years later I was able to catch "Martinis & Bikinis" on cassette format. It remains as one of my favourite albums to this day. Her voice is amazing & this performance is pure gold!!!! Regards from Mexico.

I agree with whoever said it, on another post about her, that if she isn't as well-known as she might otherwise be it's because she's above everybody's heads...and I have to agree wholeheartedly. being an even more unknown than she, I 'get' what it takes to say what you gotta say at the risk of being misunderstood...personally, I believe that knowing this and doing it anyway is what integrity is, of which she is made of VAST AMOUNTS!! with a sly smile that could rule the world, I truly hope that Sam always keeps on keeping on doing what she does best...being true to herself.

I searched for sam phillips because i was intrigued by her villain role in die hard....how surprised i am to discover that she is more than what i am expecting!
Saw her in Athens touring for Martinis and Bikinis in maybe 1992. Was she opening for the B52s? I can't recall, but I rushed out to buy the CD the next day. I recall that she stood stock still as she sang these lush and surprising songs and then apologized a few songs in for the the lack of choreography. "I was traumatized recently by a Paula Abdul video," she said.
Is she still married to TBone Burnette? Loved her album "The Turning" back in '85. Thought it was way ahead of it's time. Now that she is Sam she is free to be brilliant musically.

Huh.. I thought it sounded pretty good- pretty much like a violin.. keep in mind they were not close-mic-ing it ... mighta sounded even better if they had a mic near that horn. Certainly it's a bit of a curiosity-some might say a novelty- but I appreciate seeing such a rare & unusual instrument. Oh, yeah, I love Sam, too!! What a cool & unusual voice!!
