UPLOAD NOTE:
This bootleg has been in limited circulation for some time. I downloaded it a few years ago from a torrent community and archived it without paying much attention to it. I was somehow convinced this was already on RUclips, but the recent unearth of the Troubadour tape from the same period made me go back to this material and realize what an amazing gem it was: it hasn't been widely available until now (not on YT at least), A/V quality is stunning and, moreover, it includes (*) another footage take of the rare 'Everything is not Broken'. Props to the original taper who also authored the DVD I've got. I just losslessly ripped it and encoded + deinterlaced it using HandBrake for uploading purposes. Below are the original (relevant) notes from the torrent files with lineage and background info. Unfortunately, I don't have any other info. on who the taper/uploader was. Enjoy!

This show was filmed with permission* from the balcony on a mini-tripod. Audio is from my rig, patched into
the mic in of the camera. Mics were tied to rails. cLots of close-ups of all members and John's guitar playing.
TRT: 108 Minutes
Simple menu with song selection
Easily one of my favorite masters. He was touring for the recent release of 'Room For Squares' and all of the material
played is from that album and 'Inside Wants out' along with a few covers. If you are a fan of his earliest stuff, you
will love this. He plays a few songs by himself but most is with a band. I honestly cried during the '83'. I have been
looking forward to getting this circulated for years.
*A few days before this show, JM played an instore acoustic set at Wherehouse Music in Atlanta, GA. A friend of mine
asked him during a CD signing if he allowed audio or video taping. Apparently he said something to the effect
of 'yeah, that's totally cool', so my friend told me I had the green light to film. When I got to the show,
I got set up with my full rig and camera, and filmed the whole show with no hassle from security. When I tried
to film a few weeks later though, in Greenville, SC, I was told by the venue that he does not allow video taping.
When I asked his manager after the show, this was confirmed: only audio taping allowed.
Enjoy!
I was there. We went in honor of our great friend and Brother, Matthew Flocco who was killed at the Pentagon on 9/11. He was supposed to be at this show and had turned us all on to John Mayer's music. We are the ones yelling "Flocco" in the quiet spots. He even dedicated a song to him and met us after the show. I've never cared what critics have said about JM because he was such a stand up guy on this night 16 years ago. I just saw him last month also and five times with Dead and Co. it's been really cool to see him develop.
LyrixandLicks302 your friend is up there listening to and with SRV, May god bless your friends soul
This isn't skeptical, I'm just wondering how he knew about flocco. As much as I love JM I don't have the time to watch the whole thing, did he ask what the flocco yelling was? And also very sorry about your friend.
Andrew Stearn Thanks for that. It was a big story in our area. We were in the newspaper more than once and did news interviews too. he was 1 of 125 people that were killed at the Pentagon and they found him with his partner in his arms because he died from smoke inhalation, trying to save him. I don’t think venue wasn’t fully sold out that night and we were yelling it so, I guess we made enough noise to get the attention on his people.
jose villegas thanks for that ❤️
Everything is not broken
I hate to say it, but in my opinion, his live performances and the recordings from the early 2000s remain his best works.
I have never heard music so pure; it's unpolished, raw and unvarnished, yet incredibly amazing.
I’ve always thought this. His later albums too over produced
yeah you might be right sadly. not to say he doesn’t sound much or any worse now. i think for me it’s him playing in these smaller places that makes it special. the trio will always be my favorite aspect of john and i wish we saw more of it in modern day
Respect the opinion, hard disagree. He’s elevated as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, just overall musician throughout the years. This is more raw and nostalgic for sure though.
He had a chip on his shoulder too.
I agree 100%
man this guy was just destined for greatness. He knew where he was going from the time he was 17. Although he had incredible talent, it still took balls to follow his dream and move to Atlanta without a dollar in his pocket
+Francesco Maceri how you doin now ?

I think that this is his "secret", a clear goal and the will to do it
jmforlife83,
I agree. May, John Mayer's Glorious Iron Never Rust.
This particular version of Lenny/Wind cries mary is GOLDEN
the one guy wanted to hear 83 since the show started haha. glad he got his wish finally
Earl Prinsloo hahahahahah
Gotta wonder what was going through everyone's head. This was just 10 or so days after 9/11....must've been a strange time for everyone.
Emmet The Otter it dawned on me that this was just after 9/11 3 or so songs in....I was feeling the energy level was just a little muted. Now I get it. Given the shock of what had happened days before, both audience and band were giving it their best!
Yeah had the same thought! People were scared of going out for a little while.
Idk. I'd have to ask your mom
Room For Squares was an anthem for my fledging floundering life in 2001 after the WTC attacks and my failed engagement to the one I loved. I am endeared to this album and the impeccable voice of John Mayer. Thank you.
His vocals steadily improved over the years. His falsetto has gotten so much stronger. I saw him around this time and the buzz was definitely about his songwriting. I was impressed then and have remained impressed to this date!
and the guitar laying
Yeah that's how learning something happens, you just do it more than most people could before they went crazy with boredom, and you get better and better😅
This video makes me emotional! I just love the early 2000 era
I wanna thank with all my heart whoever filmed this.
THANK YOU.
Always killer to go take a look back at an artist at the beginning, this is awesome
Nigga
These are easily some of the most sophisticated songs ever written by a 20 year old. It’s amazing that these songs are still the same level of quality as his newer stuff. He hasn’t necessarily gotten better at songwriting (although he has definitely improved as a guitarist, especially these past few years playing with the dead) he’s mostly just evolved. He’s amazing
Meh he was Better guitarist here
king krule wrote songs of high standard like this at 15/16
@@long2dnot in any way, shape, or form.
awesome awesome awesome..I remember..I was 21 back in 2001, when John was on his way to stardom..Room for Squares would still be my favorite album of him..
Paul Jason agreed
Funny, how the girls scream during "You're Body is a Wonderland", and the guys during the SRV/Hendrix medley and the blues licks. Nice show !
John is truly bisexual in attraction haha
@@sethlandis93ahhahaha this is true
This is when John was hungry (not talking food). The best year of his career in my opinion. You can see the love he has for his art / talent /. He was having fun. Come back home John. We’ve missed you.
Try with pino and steve it’s also incredible
Oh what a comment sir
And now he has with his Solo tour! I keep seeing clips and saying its like 01/02 again
His journey was one of epic proportions. He still isn’t done but enjoying his success right now just cruising his life. Must be some accomplishment to have master guitarists like Eric Clapton say you are up in their ranks.
I genuinely think John’s a better technical player then Clapton, love Clapton but he’s very overrated. The likes of hendrix and SRV are light years ahead imo
A true treat even snuck in Amazing Grace 🎸36:16
Wind cries Mary has to be the most beautiful song ever and with John covering it makes it absolutely unreal In my opinion that is the best song ever written
I like watching the drummer mouth "bop" every time he hits the snare. I did something similar when I played the drums but never noticed it until someone pointed it out to me.
hahahahahah it was the first thing i noticed when I saw this video LoL
John is just 23 here turning 24 a month after this show..What an amazing talent and no guitar techs yet 😄
It's 2019 and that's still one of the best shows of all time, John's energy is just great
This was recorded the day before I day born.
Do you speak english
Connor J. Mc haha yes. “Was” auto corrected to “day”. I also speak fluent Italian and Spanish :)
Me too!
@@selenamarino5203 congratulations
Love how the drummer calls out to his mom on every beat. Stewie would be proud!
The Same Effect fuck yeah bro 😂😂😂
AHHAAHHAHS MOM
Oh man I love how he gets in the groove for Neon. What a performer.
John Mayer has Always Been so Talented, and this is as early as 2001.
Ahh Neon is such a masterpiece! I love it on the strat more than the acoustic but I will take it anyway I can. Thanks for loading this! 2001 was such a memorable year. Dad died, baby girl was born and then 9/11. Crazy year.
I see the pun in there you can’t fool me
@@virgillewis6240 I must’ve outwitted myself. Can’t see the pun. Please explain brilliance to me lol. By brilliance I mean my slowness.
@@BeefNEggs057 “I will take it anyway I can”
@@virgillewis6240 Ah. “Taking it Anyway I can” might be a bit too broad a statement for me in most areas of life but Mayer songs are not one of them. Got the touch.
@@BeefNEggs057 Because it’s not a pun. It’s just good wordplay.
His impromptu improv at 1:20:00 is better than a lot of people's actual songs written with 5 cowriters
😂👍
I really enjoy everything he does from playing to singing to talking. Just amazing artist.
I just saw 2023 John on his Solo Tour. It’s interesting to see 2001 John on this video. He has had so many looks over the years, but 2001 John and 2023 John look the most alike. I had to look close up to be sure this was young John, and it is (obviously). Anyway, he’s very handsome.
Literally a classic show
anyone else recognizing "amazing grace" at 36:16 ? Beautiful!
Joe Main yea did not8ce that right of Lenny for a second
Joe Main yup i did...man wasn't expecting dat....but was beautiful...
This may be the only known video of JM playing an affordable amp.
Jon Selman what amp is he playing through?
Yes pls reply need the fkin amppp
Believe this is on a Fender Vibro King Custom. Available at your local guitar center for around 1600.
@@JS-rp7qb its a fender dual professional not vibro king
Quite frankly, his playing and tone was much better in the old days
Lenny starts at 34:29
wow thanks for this! listening to young John gives is the best when feeling nostalgic
I'm very impressed with the fact that you've marked the beginning of each song by time!! That's so hard to come by when watching live performances on youtube. Thank you!!

Makes me wish time machines existed
But then you realize this is a few days after 9/11 and you really should worry about stopping that before going to see JM
@@Ironworthstriking most perfect comment that could be written on this tbh...
The city love solo was great! He was really in the zone
Thanks for uploading this! I find it very interesting that John really already had his shit together both playing, songwriting and tone-wise way back here at the beginning of his career. Playing through that Fender VibroKing and he sounds as good as he does on his mega-buck Two Rocks and Dumbles. I really enjoyed how high of quality this is- both John's playing thank the video itself. Thanks for it!
Man... The solo on city love is so raw but so tasty. Not the over polished john Mayer we got in 2007. There's something charming about it.
yessir. we need another room for squares
yessir. we need another room for squares
Joey Coleman I believe there is only one, "Room for Squares" in the career of an artist IF the artist is lucky enough to have even one. What I mean is that RFS was more than the songs on it, more than the musicians on it. It was a lining up of the stars...timing that brought audience and John together in a very special moment that was greater than the sum of its'parts. That marriage of events is rare indeed but when it happens, artist and audience get swept up together. The longevity of the artist's career very much depends upon the very real talent inherent in the musician and his/her work ethic mixed with continued timing of events not necessarily in anyone's control. I think that's why the good advice to someone is to not make it a career choice unless you CANNOT see yourself doing anything else for a living because it takes so much drive to make it work out!
I just read the video description. The love and reverence that you the uploader have for music and music fans is beautiful. THANK YOU
I miss the old John
Man I miss Neon of 2001. So surreal this was 10 days after 9/11. I was 20 then now 39 going on 40. My how time flies!
Turned 30 a few months ago and this comment hits hard man!! Life is going too fast
The whole damn album for me means so much 😍😍
What an amazing talent he is.
i love the part of city love when it looks like the music punches the camera in the face 16:45
Jesus, this is fucking amazing! John so young, on fire right out of the gate!14:35! 😳 Oh my gawd!!! And look at the long hair on Da La on da bass!
one of the coolest things about this video is that there is not one single smartphone in the air
why do you idiots always cry about phones lmao? it isn't any of your fucking business about who wants to record a show. And you know what? If someone hadn't used their camera to record this, you wouldn't be watching it right now.
Thanks for uploading this! I had never seen it before:)
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for posting this. What a gem.
the fact that David is playing a squier tells you a lot ...
I love how this is the early Any Given Thursday set. He references in an interview that he was supposed to play Wind Cries Mary and changing it on the fly to Man on the Side. Love how young and hungry he is in this performance. Can't like it enough.
1:20:45 - 1:21:00 who knew such musical derp-ery was possible. Thanks for posting this btw :D
HalfDecentCovers Watch the drummer during that same time span and try not to laugh.
Brandon Pierson aaaaahaha lol! Nice spot.
HalfDecentCovers Its like, the pre-cursor to "little sur"!
With Lieutenant Dan on bass guitar..
Joseph A.W He’s got new legs hahahaha
@@BeefNEggs057 he better stay away from new year parties this time around LOL
Tha jam on neon was so awesome!!!
Haha that guy who shouted “Why Georgia” just before he played it must have felt pretty good.
This is my hometown I would’ve gone but I was to young and didn’t know who he was at the time I was an elementary school kid in 2001
such a force of nature....never seen a man can talk using guitar like he can
Watch the drummer at 1:14:02, every time he hits the snare he opens his mouth. Lol!
+Arturo Stocker reminds me of patrick hahahaa
Was about to post this. Looks like he's giving it his own "pop" each time. By the way, thanks to the original poster. And, I agree with @Kirby Boogle on the time machine.
I know! What the hell's with that dude? xd
Im laughing my ass off
never seen anything like that in my life hahaha
priceless
Arturo Stocker now I can’t stop watching the drummer. Lol.
this is my favorite video ever
12:19 "one must hydrate to stay funky"
this is very true
This was the exact year and date I was born
E Y Good to see another young guy like me still likes this kind of stuff. I’m 19
Pair of ridiculous persons ,the age doesn’t matter .
from this to Carry Me Away.
😂😂😂😭 he growin old man hes just vibin rn now, he can still kill it on the guitar but chooses not to. He says "its an age thing".
I would pay big money to see him break out one of his old strats and play Lenny. Doesn’t even have to be the BLK1, just wanna see him go back to his roots for a little
Don't know if you mean it in a bad way but he always said that it has always been about the "tunes" for him never about showing off how virtuoso he is/can be as a guitarist. I do miss this aspect of his playing in his recent stuff tho
carry me away wasnt a "Serious" project he literally said that he wrote and worked on the song during a summer vacation
@@JohnDeclaro14 Then what about Clapton lol?
1:00:55 breaking a string on the last note damn
The timing of the random camera adjustment at 16:45
John ,u r so great...!
I don't think the other guitarist will ever realize how jealous millions of guitar fans will be of that jam during neon... wow just wow
this is great
holy shit the crowd gets into it in this old vid. nothing like today
Timeless
How does he make his body dance while keeping his head in the same place???
roaster technique
37:27 sounds like Yellow [Bedletter] guitar intro by Pearl Jam
The TLA. This is before he hit it big. That’s a fairly small venue on south st. And his original guitarist too. Hmm. Right after this. A few yrs later John did an in store at Tower. Remember them? There’s nothing left in cc. No boutique guitar stores, no Tower, Borders etc. anyway, it was about the time he was starting to make it even bigger. Long story. Too long to tell.
That’s the craziest live version of Neon I’ve ever seen.
Generator been coming back just to watch it everyday for a month lol
The one in Cincinnati was even crazier, I hope someday he brings this full band version back, I don’t know why he doesn’t do that live anymore
I don't know how he did this a week after 9/11 ,
i wish i had this on cd
He’s what 21 here? Incredible
24
He should do a show with JUST Dave Labruyere
he did many
Since I've been watching this vid (many years) I wonder if john still remember some specific concerts like this one
I love John as much as the next fellow, but why does he change the vocal melodies? The albums vocal melodies are amazing.
I guess it’s not always easy to sing those notes love.

Does anyone think he's using pedals during the Lenny/Wind Cries Mary part or do you think that's just clean guitar into his amp?
I think clean for sure, w/ some reverb obviously
maybe a bit of tweed and treble
