We were able to take mom out of care after a year and half becasue of how well she was doing. When she got home for first time, she even went to her side of bed and knew right where to go. Her behavior was so much better than when she went in. She did have to go back into care after a year or so.

You have had and may have difficult times due to your wifes dx, but you are a blessing in her life. She is lucky woman to have a husband that is sticking by her.. it takes love and compassion to get through this. It is a very sad condition that can last a very long time, as you know. You are her shining light.

I think I would weigh her (I'm thinking you have a scale at home) soon; it will help you keep track of her health/calorie intake. We found with my dementia friend that his decline in activity level & appetite was in part caused by an undiagnosed lung problem. I think they used to call it walking pneumonia, diagnosed with a chest Xray. Also her prescriptions would maybe need adjusting if she has lost weight. All my unasked for advice is from a non-medical background and offered with virtual hugs to you both.

It really was so amazing seeing the difference in Theresa in just two weeks. Spending the day with her prior to our vacation, and then spending time with her there at home 2 weeks later was as though we had turned back a year's worth of time! It's brutally obvious how much more comfortable Theresa is at home and with you. She and I had our usual laughs and then some! To say that I cherish my precious friend is an understatement. She was so much more peaceful there at home and she and I had CONVERSATION!!!
This disease is HORRIBLE and I merely watching from the bench mainly. While I do not live the day to day, like you Trey, I do see the ups and downs, and its a painful reality. That being said- to watch the love in Theresa's eyes when she looks at you, and the return in yours when you look at her is one of the most beautiful sights.
I truly love you both and am so very blessed to have you two as friends.
BTW... I'll see you guys this week! :-)

Hi Trey, I was shocked to read about the Covid exposure. I’m glad both of you had mild symptoms. I have been trying to get back online to update about my FTD journey. I’ve made some progress. It has been 6 months since my dementia dx and I have accepted my plight. My AV tech at my medical office is going to do a 1 shot video for RUclips. I’m going to do a short intro of who I am and, yes, accept my Dx in public as much as possible. I must give other colleagues and staff at the accompanying hospitals a cogent explanation on my abrupt departure. Some know, some don’t. I’m going to try to utilize my time left in the community Alzheimers org until I’m unable to function. I do not peruse the internet much anymore about FTD. We follow you and Teepa Snow. On another note, I’m proud of you! You are such a dedicated human being. Your wife is not lucky, she’s blessed! When my 1 video is made, I’ll send you a notification and you will see with whom you’ve been speaking. My Google handle "Harlem Lights" is paying homage to the GA poet and writer who my life resonated with. She didn’t die of dementia, but she stood bravely for suffering. After I graduated medical school in the early 90’s, I NEVER thought I would lose my life to a brain disease with no cure. Please keep well and know we’re praying. 💜👩🏻‍🦳

Hi Shannon - Yes, I am still paying for memory care for the next 30 days as part of the contract. I believe she can return during that time frame if needed. However, I hope that is not the case. Theresa's does recognize our home, although it was a bit foreign to her for the first few days back. She does not appear to recall her time at memory care and has not mentioned it once since she has been back.

@tpippen75 It's promising that she is doing so well! I know it's probably not a forever situation, and I am happy you get a little break from the memory care facility. 1 more question if you don't mind: when you are working in your home office, how do you know she is safe? For instance, if she turns on the stove or walks out the door. . . Do you have some sort of LoJack on her? 😉 Cameras? Bracelet/necklace with her information and your contact number?
I hope family, friends, and community really do step up for you. Even an hour/week helps. No one helped me, and I am still (unfortunately) (a little) bitter about it, but I am slowly recovering/healing.

I now have safety locks on our front door which prevent her from getting out and walking off. She can however, freely roam the backyard and garden. Our backyard is fenced in and remains locked. I have camera's outside that also alert me of her whereabouts. I've done all the cooking for several years and she has never attempted to turn on the stove. I have the door open to my office as well and have a good view of the kitchen area. I will likely get her a bracelet or something with her ID and contact info. Thanks for your questions!

What an AWESOME blessing from Jesus, Trey ! Now, down to brass tacks. Even though you both had a mild case, IF you’d like to know of a couple of things to take to eliminate it from your systems, please ask. OR in thinking of the future, these same two things can be put on a shelf until/if needed. My entire family stays stocked up on both items ALL the time, so that any of us can jump into action at a moment’s notice. I won’t bore you with details, unless you want to know. Again, what you are receiving is a blessing from Jesus, and I hope you are taking advantage and enjoying every single minute of your time together ! I am thrilled for your cats to have their Mama at home, too.❤️

I jsut wanted to mention an maybe u know already an maybe not. Hoping all continues to go well for each and both of you. In case you aren’t aware, music can be a HUGE comfort and “activity” for those with dementia. We watched an amazing you tube video by the nonprofit “Music and Memory” and as a result, we play music from our mom’s adolescence and early adulthood (1950’s) and her responses to it are still joyfully present after 75 years! She dances, sings the lyrics, and is much, much happier when the music is on. She never tires of it!
It also gives us a bit of a “break” as she’s very content to listen and enjoy it! It’s wonderful to see her enjoying something so much!
We learned that the area of the brain that responds to music is the “last area yo go” in terms of aging and dementia. So, if you are open to it and can do so, I encourage you to give it a try. I can’t recommend it enough! The RUclips video is worth a watch as well - very touching and inspiring too!
All the best to you and your wife! I hope her day to day life being at home continues to go well. You’re an amazing spouse! Kathleen

Greetings! Well how quickly life plans change! I'm so happy that you both are doing well, and were not seriously sick from Coronavirus. It might be helpful if Teresa would be willing to wear an ID bracelet and/or tracking device so that just in case she does leave the house, you can know her whereabouts and get her home quickly and safely. Many of our families who have children with autism use them to ensure their childrens' safety. And Teresa gets to be with her beloved kitties too! I will keep you both in prayer that this arrangement will work out long term for you both, as there's no place like home. God Bless! 🙏✝️

In our area we have a caregivers timeout program which provides the caregiver some personal time to run errands, go shopping, take a walk, whatever. I ran the program for 5 years. We had so much fun once a week. Our time was filled with activities, friendships and love. I could tell you some stories. Have you ever heard of pick's disease? It has very similar symptoms but usually hits young people Theresa's age hard. Many times it is diagnosed as Alzheimers. I tried to find your email but couldn't. Mine is on my page if you would like to share info. I helped care for my grandmother who had Alzheimers. Plus went on to work as an activities director at an assisted living center. I have hopefully made a little difference to those around me. Take care of yourself! Like they say on an airplane save yourself so you can help others.

@@tpippen75 Trey, I thought you might be interested in the PACE program, now that Therese is home. It stands for "Program for All Inclusive Care of the Elderly." It's a home-based program for people 55 and older, at risk for nursing home placement. I believe you have said that Therese has Medicare and Medicaid. PACE has all services, that are coordinated, including medical, behavioral, nursing, nutrition, therapies, adult day health.
We used PACE for my mother, who had dementia and other medical conditions. I loved it so much, I went to work there, after my mother passed.
There is a PACE program in your area - Suncoast PACE. May be worth checking out.

I have to be honest I just really wanted to cry when you said that you enjoyed taking care of Teresa. That really moved me. I'm not trying to be mean but it really is rare for a husband to be very devoted and care for his sick spouse, women seem to do it easier mainly because we have you know a lot of support and we can talk about it with friends and others but men don't have that as much. So to hear that you enjoy caring for Teresa is such a joy. That's why we are such fans. Im glad your illness was mild and here's to a speedy recovery
