I first saw Peter perform at Winterland in San Francisco. This was in 1973 I believe. His first time there. Frampton's Camel. The guy was completely prepared. The band was tight. His first 2 albums are still among my favorite's. Foghat and Johnny Winter were top bill that nigh but Frampton blew everyone away. People knew who he was but had no idea what he was capable of on his own. "All I want to be is by your Side". That is one of my favorite songs. Beautifully written and produced. $4.00 got you into Winterland back then.

Pete wanted to be the front man of HP. But he realized (wisely) that it was just not going to happen as long as Steve Marriott was in the band. Frampton was a talented musician and performer but he could not hold a candle to the stage presence and charisma of Marriott. It turned out good for him as he achieved mega-wealth with his "Alive" album, but I'll bet he never had as much fun as when he was with the Pie.

Frampton's 'mega-fame' was very short-lived. He was already on the downswing with his followup album to 'Come's Alive', in the late 70s, 'I'm in you' ...and after that he just basically disappeared until David Bowie attempted to resurrect Peter's fledgling career as 'guitar-ace' for Bowie's 87-88' Glass Spider Tour. Sadly, the album and tour were a bomb for Bowie and so it didn't help Frampton at all except perhaps for a performance paycheck. Frampton's stage charisma was already shaky fueled in the early days with his novelty 'talk-box' device that became dated and then when he lost his hair..that kinda killed it all !

    • @landeez
      @landeez 6 лет назад +27

That's right. Steve Marriott forced audiences to glue their eyes on him. I saw Humble Pie in 1973. When it came to the guitar solo Steve M. was playing fantastically when suddenly mid-riff he threw both of his hands up in the air and then pointed at Peter Frampton who was actually playing the solo. My reaction was, 'Oh, it's the other guy playing!" Even still I had to force myself to watch Peter F. because Steve was such a magnetic presence. I count being brought up in an era with so much great music as one of the true blessings of my life.

I was not around for the Humble Pie heyday, but years later through my older brother, I listened to Rockin' the Fillmore and was totally blown away by the heavy guitar driven rock and those authoritive masterful vocals. I'd say those listens pretty much defined my interest as a guitarist. I remember hearing about the death of Steve Marriott....very sad, but I don't think ANYONE can touch his vocals, so they live on.

Well I had a little hottie Italian GF who insisted that we wait in line to get Mr.Frampton's autograph at some record store and the place was packed! And Honest God, a 15 year old me asked Peter F. Think of all the legends we would have missed if you had one or two chances and then you’re done. I only don’t mention recent times because the industry hasn’t been the same for a while now.

No one goes to a Mozart opera to hear the talents of the 1st violinist however good he is. When Marriot unleashed those cords he upstaged everything including his own playing. In the early '70s there was plenty of wonderful soul singers around, but no one could do it like Steve within a hard rock band or anywhere else for that matter. Back then there may have been reasons to believe that one day someone may get close, but as we know no one ever did, and likely never will.
IMO no one in their right mind should want to be seen in competition to Steve Marriot on the same stage however good they are. It should not have happened to a dog, never mind someone as talented as Peter. Can you imagine how soul-destroying it must have been to have played your best solos and sung your heart out for two hours, while the audience never took their eyes off of the other guy on the stage for a moment, at least half of them wondering why you are even there?

I was in college at Buffalo, New York when Frampton and his band played at the Norton Student Union Hall. I was familiar with a couple of his studio albums, but more often I would play Led Zepellin, Hendrix, Free, and the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore. I dropped acid with my friends and settled in for an other-worldly performance by Frampton in that small venue which seated only a couple hundred students. I left the show feeling that I'd seen a manifestation of God through Frampton's lyrical guitar interplay while leading his band. I couldn't stop smiling. The Frampton Comes Alive recording captured that incarnation of the band pretty well, but of course there's nothing like being there.

When Pete left a couple years later I thought ‘too bad’ but I got it. There was only ever going to be one star in HP -whether Steve intended this or not, his talent was just so dominant.
Peter was strong too in his way and the only way he’d be able to show this to people would be leading his own group. Also Peter potentially had a more mainstream appeal, different kinds of songs…that would likely never get played in Humble Pie. Nobody rocked harder than the Pie back then imho

Also WRIF which had a bigger budget, listener pool with more wattage and by the time of the "Frampton Comes Alive" album, W4 might've been around as well; 3 major stations in one city.

Before Canadian Content rules came into place there was also the Big 8, CKLW over in Windsor, breaking bands at 50,000 watts.

Sorry son, 100.7 WMMS: The Buzzard in Cleveland was the greatest rock station. BTW we also had Vernors in Cleveland too. Rolling Stone Magazine named WMMS "Best Radio Station" (Large Market) nine straight years (1979-87) as part of the magazine's annual Readers' Poll.

I was brought with a friend to see Edger Winter and Pete opened. I was amazed. I thought, who is this guy? Blue Jeans and a denim cowboy shirt in New Orleans? That was nice, because it wasn't like he was into all that rock star BS. The Songs, I had never heard any of them, and the playing. We were ten rows out. Very possibly the best live performance I've ever seen. And he did play, "Do you fell like I do", or whatever it's call. That was 2-3 years before he deservedly exploded.

Great interview. Loved Rockin' The Fillmore and became a PF fan.Bought his studio releases and saw him supporting the Doobs and Montrose then what became Comes Alive, all at Winterland. ha, also DOG with Skynyrd at Oakland. Fan until the end.

I bought Rockin' The Fillmore in '72 and was blown away.
Among all these great live band shots, there's one of Peter, looking pretty bummed.
First thought then was 'lighten up !'
Second was he was probably on his way out the door.
btw, there at Winterland, Sunday night for DYFLWD and more.
    Pretty great ;)

Smart to move on. He contributed greatness with Frampton Comes Alive and if he waited it would have never happened. Steve was too great of a singer to overcome in Humble Pie. I'm glad to have them both in my collection.

After the release of his first live Lp and the amount of airplay it received it I realized that his music no longer fell in the Rock genre but in Pop Rock leaning more so towards teeny boppers because it not only played on FM but AM radio played the crap of it too. From that point on my taste for his sound dropped immensely. I love his guitar riffs...but when he was with Humble Pie and whom I'm still a huge fan of.

I've often wondered what is was like for you to leave Humble Pie. They were becoming rock's gift to concerts so it was hardly like you left during a trough. I remember watching you create your new work and it seemed to happen very quickly. I was attending Central Michigan University when you did your show there and, despite excellent connections, couldn't get a seat. I made up for it by thoroughly enjoying your show at Grand Rapids' Meijer Gardens many years later.😊👍

I think it was supposed to be a finale i believe Steve morphed back into The Small Faces again because I remember going to a festival The Bickerstaff Festival where they were entertaining a huge crowd and a steamed up Steve poured a pint under the lid of the organ and the whole thing went bang with tons of smoke pouring out of it. Seems he would have done anything for a good laugh.

Garth replied, We Don’t Like Change. It’s a factor and always will be. Your decision was not control freak oriented. The result of your efforts prove that. Just give us more, that’s all. I was so upset when he left. I see them with frampton and a year later Humble Pie plays again and it was never advertised Frampton wasn't in the band. if I wasn't a Steve Marriot fan I would have raised hell until I got my $ back. they pulled that again a couple years later when I went to see Hot Tuna and got bloody Journey.😖 I did try to get my money back that time. Hated journey. plus they just were NOT what I had paid to see.

I understand that great musicians have to grow, Miles Davis wouldn't ever play his earlier material. And when Mr. Frampton went solo it allowed him to be the front man and add pop making his music much more successful. But Humble Pie was so good and ahead of its time. There were really four bands that pioneered today's jam band rock scene: the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, Humble Pie, and the James Gang. Humble Pie figured out that "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" is a jam band song one year after it came out and thirty years before Widespread Panic. Once Mr. Frampton left Humble Pie it was missing an important part and declined.
