A couple of things ... Tom Sholtz has an electrical engineering degree from MIT ... he refused to use synthesizers ...he developed a line of electronic equipment used throughout the music industry. I appreciate the intent of your statement but it's a bit misleading... the Rockman itself is actually a digital synthesizer of sorts, but it was the first one for guitars. Also, there is an organ prominently featured throughout this piece - so it's not 100% guitars. Tom Scholz practically invented 80's guitar sound - Def Leppard used Rockman effects heavily on their Hysteria album - but it doesn't make a guitar sound like an organ.

@Eric_Day84 That is urban legend. First off no tracks from the demo that went to Epic and producer John Boylan were used on this record. This was confirmed by Tom when he was interviewed by people who would know if he was telling the truth or not.
All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA. The record was mixed at Westlake Studios by producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom.
Boylan had to do a lot more work on Tom's tracks to get them ready for the record to be mixed than Tom has talked about.

This album is widely considered to be one of the greatest debut albums in rock music history. Everything on it is fire. And I really like the sequencing on it. It wouldn't be too late for you guys to work your way through it because you started with the first song on the album and then you skipped forward a few songs. You can go back and pick up where you left off with the second song, Peace of Mind, and then skip this one when you get to it and finish the album out. I have seen a lot of reactors do this and it's always highly engaging.
I was lucky enough to see Boston on this tour in 1977 and they were fantastic. It really was an absolutely incredible show. And the singing was just as solid as on the album, everything was. It was in a medium-sized indoor venue and the ticket price was $7.50 including all taxes and fees, lol.

powerful voice in a power ballad that stands the test of time, and demands to be heard by everyone. RIP Brad Delp, who was stated by many to be the kindest man they ever met. Sadly

Boston had such a unique sound because Tom Scholz not only wrote arranged and played most of the instrumental tracks, but also designed and built the effects equipment on this album. And this album was recorded in the basement of Tom's apartment. Back in the day and up to today people in search of a record deal will do what the label says. The label wanted to record at their studio in L.A. Tom refused. He wanted to do it in the basement. The rep started lo leave tom's apartment but stopped at the door and said "O.k. you record the tracks here. We'll mix them in L.A." Tom paused for a few seconds in shock. And then the rep said "And we'll split the producers fee."

They like to think that a band plays together and hangs out and writes songs and gets a contract and goes into the studio and then they jam out in the studio and an album comes out of that. This wasn’t like that at all. It was many, many years of long nights playing along with a tape deck!” Legend.

I remember hearing this "8 Track" tape in my friends car for the first time in 1976 when I was 16. It sounded so fresh compared to the rock that was out at the time (Zepplin, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Santana, CCR, Clapton,) just a few of the great tunes. Then this album came out and I knew even at that young age that this will be another timeless band. Its awesome to see you young'uns react the same way I did back then! My favorite song off this album: Something About You.

I put it on my dads stereo system with headphones for each of us. The looks we have each other were of shock and awe. I had never heard anything like it before, and have been a fan since that night in 77.

Tribute to my father who gave me so many gifts , one of the most meaningful being ROCK N ROLL , with boston being the best part of that gift
he passed away in a similiar manner to the singer of Boston , brad delp
    Way way too young

It’s hard to beat Tom Scholz and Brad Delp. Tom Scholz was a musical genius who graduated from MIT. He actually invented the siren box that plugs into his guitar that’s why the guitar sounds so different than anyone else. Tom actually played all the instruments on this album in his basement in the beginning. And that is Brad Delp absolutely killing the vocals like The Prodigy he was.

Now 63, seen them roughly 35 times live, and still get that moment of space, relaxation, and complete peace of mind. The best album ever produced, is still rockin' the world.

I'm way late here, but Tom Shotz built his own amplifiers, his own studio recording equipment, and effects pedals, including the one of one hyperspace pedal that makes all the space noises. He was an electronic engineer for Polaroid. He wrote the songs and played every instrument except the drums and had his friend Brad Delp sing - recording all but one track on the album in his basement studio. The band was just a touring band. He was hyper sensitive to others banking off of his work so much, that the record company tried to force him to use a producer and he fired him immediately after the producer suggested they split production royalties. He was told by every record company he approached that rock was dead and it would go nowhere because it was 1976 and Disco was all the craze, not rock. It's still considered the greatest debut album in history. Then, after making it big, he started his own music effects company called Rockman, which he sold in the past few years. He gave most of his money away to charity. When I saw them, live, in the 1990's, every amp on stage was hand built by Tom.

@ruelsmith There are multiple falsehoods in your post and some of it is just pure fiction. At the time this record was made Tom used a Marshal SLP tube amp that he modified. Big name players had their Marshall and Fender amps modified long before Tom recorded this record. EVH comes to mind. Tom for damn sure did not build the guitar amp and cabinet that he used on this record. I hear people say that Tom built and invented his own studio recording equipment but it is well known and well documented that Tom used a Scully 12 track 1 inch tape machine and a console/mixer that he purchased (Tom has admitted this in multiple interviews). The console and the tape machine are the heart of any analog studio. So what studio recording equipment did Tom build and use for this record?
As for the hyperspace pedal, this is a prime example of how Tom has repeatedly exaggerated his achievements and selectively reported the facts. The hyperspace pedal is a modified Echo Plex tape loop echo machine. Tom did not invent or build it Tom only modified it to be able to adjust multiple parameters at the same time
Tom was not an electronic engineer for Polaroid. Toms degrees from MIT are in mechanical engineering and Tom was a product design engineer at Polaroid.
All of Brads vocals recorded at either Capital Studios Studio C or at The Record Plant LA by Boylan. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad and recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record at The Record Plant LA by Boylan. The band as pictured on the back of the record actually recorded three songs in LA but only one of the cuts made it to the record. The band as pictured on the back of the record most certainly existed before the record was finished as they recorded three songs that were proposed to be added to the record and the band was certainly put together before a tour was even thought of
Tom for damn sure did not fire Boylan nor did Tom every try to fire Boylan. Had Tom done so, it would have been a disaster for this record. Boylan had to arrange for Tom to be tutored on how to record acoustic instruments and drums before Tom could not make drum tracks worthy of the record without help. Google LA audio engineer Paul Grupp and Boston and check it out.
Where do you get this BS from in terms of why it took Tom so long to get signed? The fact is that Tom was not following the established path and protocol to get signed. Boylan was very clear about this The hang up was that Tom was just sending in his demo tapes cold. The established practice at the time was for bands to record their music, get it on local radio, demonstrate a demand for the music and hire promoters with inside connections to submit the demos and to promote the band. Once Tom followed this protocol and practices ie got a promoter, Tom's demos got plenty of attention from the big record labels
The "Rockman company" was actually Scholz Research and Development and the company was most certainly not a music effects company. SRD designed and built amps. pre-amps and sound processing gear for electric guitars

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 26 дней назад

@ruelsmith In addition, Tom most certainly did not play and record all of the instrement racks on this record There are two drummers on this record none of which are Tom There are two people playing guitar tracks-Brad and Barry. One perrson playing bass tracks--Fran. In the lawsuits between Tom and Barry Tom was forced under oath to tell the real story or face serious legal actions and he finally came clean disclosing the fact that Barry and Fran do in fact play on multiple tracks on this record and that Brad plays acoustic guitar on one track

@HRConsultant_Jeff Most of the electric guitar work on these two songs is Barry not Tom. Tom only plays the "special effects guitar" snippets on these two songs. Barry plays electric rhythm guitar on both of these songs. The huge power chords are Barry and his SG, and the lead guitar solos in Long Time are 100% Barry as well. This is all documented in the post litigation 2006 Scholz Remaster of the 1976 debut Boston record.
