i was one of those people who read the hot zone by richard preston in my high school science class and have to this day been intrigued by the ebola virus and the way it completely distroys the human body and we dont even understand all of the genetic proteins that make up the virus... i wanted to grow up to follow dr. nancy jaax into the BL-4 hot labs... and of course my dad thought i was nuts lol... i still am the crazy nut who wants to work at USAMRIID.... my hats off and respect and admiration to both dr. nancy and jerry jaax and every other researcher who has put them selves in danger to keep us and our soldiers safe from pathogens both developed and natural

That's awesome, I've got similar aspirations. Can you tell me what stage you're at right now if you are still pursuing that goal?

I am one of the former enlisted personnel who used to work at USAMRIID. I worked in the AR division, Bldg. Engineers and, Ward 200. I was on the Vickers team for 2 years. As well as being one of the MRV project subjects. Spent more than a few days on the isolation side. While in training. As well as testing the bubble. Which was a small isolation chamber. We had a little German lady who was the cook there, when we were on project, Mrs. DeWeese. I am looking forward to the film.
I can relate to the mistakes that get made there at the institute. I was on duty the night Maj. Lewis got jammed up when a freezer went down in Virology Div. I was the nut that went in after him.

I grew up in the area where the Hot Zone book is based on, sometimes it's a little scary to have that as part of your history lol

Sad that this was before a massive global pandemic that’s still haunting our steps. They weren’t ready for their Ebola scare and they still aren’t ready now. I read The Hot Zone well before the Ebola outbreak mentioned here and read the second book last year (as you do whilst on holiday).

Now you have a very mass casualty event in the U.S. ,doctor Jerry Jaax. The unthinkable is real and everyday!

The upside is that it isn't nearly as fatal as ebola. The downside is it's airborne. I hope you're staying safe!

Watching this in 2021 and having been 7 and living near Reston, VA, when this happened, I wonder what would be different now if that airborne strain of Ebola had been pathogenic in humans. Now that we have airborne pandemic, would people behave better if they had seen real population-reducing carnage?

It's so crazy imagining this guy doing all the stuff he did in the book. Leading the swat team into the monkey house, Wrestling with the escaped monkey, having his brother murdered. Nancy was my favorite character in the book!
