They stopped using explosive squibs in movies, so the shooting scenes dont have the impact they did in the 80s and 90s. Violence in films is an interesting subject. I remember Cronenberg saying he thought the violence should show the viewer just how awful it is, and that if it's hidden, it's worse because it diminishes the horrible consequences.

Let me say, with pride, that yes, we Americans did have very different standards for R ratings. I was 6 years old in 1987, and I still remember my dad, who was a cop by trade, taking me to see Robocop, just because it was our day to hang out together and he always took me to what he wanted to see. Often we'd even stick around after the credits and sneak into a free extra movie, one day the double feature ended up being Total Recall and Death Warrant. The violence was more than on tv, but really all our parents worried about was nudity and language, violence was not even a concern, even at Verhoeven levels. They'd simply ask us beforehand "You know the difference between fantasy and reality, right? The movies are all fake, everyone's ok?" and you answer yes, and that was it. Anyway Robocop became my favorite movie of all time when, a few years later, I was stuck awake all night at a cousin's house with no tv signal or games and very limited tapes, and the only thing that got me through to the morning with my sanity intact was a VHS of Robocop which I watched, rewound, and rewatched until the sun came up, and it never once got boring.
Totally agree, even though I was raised in Chile.
I feel like in the 80's parents cared more about nudity than violence in R rated movies.
Your Dad took you to see Robocop when you were 6? Man, I first saw Robocop when I was 21 and found the scene when Murphy was killed highly disturbing-bordering on haunting.
In Denmark, we had the rules, but they weren't followed. I could go and watch whatever I wanted in my local theatre. Return to the Blue Lagune was a bit confusing, but I liked Milla.
The American fixation with the occasional boob of curse word is fascinating to me.
@@paullittle9187 It was haunting, but also comforting in a strange way. My father died not too long after, when I was 11, and after that I'd see that scene and imagine how hard the doctors had worked to save his life, but heart attacks are often just fatal no matter what you do. I wasn't able to see him in the hospital or anything like that, I only found out later from my mom, so that scene helped me connect with a part of my father and his passing that I otherwise would have ignored, and it helped me to let go of him and move on. We live in a real world, and there's no avoiding the hard parts. Better to face them head on, no matter the age. I had already seen Optimus Prime die on the big screen by then, and I was younger for that. That's why so many kids movies have very dark and disturbing elements, but it's only a small part of a larger and very appealing world, so it teaches you to take the bad with the good.
My all time. I'm synced up with the commentary now. Thanks to my mom for having excellent taste in movies and having us watch it twice the same night we rented and showing me the best sci-fi movie of the 80s, if not all time.
When I was around 7 or 8, my dad watched Robocop with me, he defined it as "comic book" violence. Fundamentally, "bad guys are too bad, we need an ultimate good guy, Robocop". However, around the same age, my friend told me about 'The Shining', but my dad was hesitant to let me watch that one. When I asked him years later why, he said, "I guess I didn't want your young mind worrying about a scenario where dad goes crazy and kills the family with an axe". Fair, I thought.

@@thomasweeden2683 It was never so much the violence he worried about. That is just physical matter, anatomy if you will. It was the intent of the violence. As long as, fundamentally, it was good guys vs bad guys, no worries.

My favourite film of all time. I can never get bored of it. The story is so good and yet simple. There are so many themes in it. The screenplay is so tight. The humour is absolutely hilarious. Peter Weller's physical acting is amazing. The practical effects and RoboCop design are amazing. The music fits every scene perfectly. I find myself thinking about and talking about this film more often than any other film.

During the filming of *"RoboCop",*
Phil Tippett approached Paul Verhoeven
about doing a dinosaur picture.
The film was to be called
*"DINOSAURS",* with both Phil Tippett
& Paul Verhoeven as the directors and
Walon Green (who co-wrote the script
for *"RoboCop 2")* as the script writer,
and the creatures were to be done with
stop motion animation.
The original story was about a
Styracosaurus named Woot with his
mammal friend named Suri, and the
main antagonist was a T. rex named
Grozni. The climax was to have Woot
& Grozni fought in a epic battle to
the death, with Woot being victorious,
but it proves to be fruitless as the K-T
asteroid crashed into Earth, wiping out
the Dinosaurs to extinction.
It was unmade at that time for budget
reasons (Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted
the film to be made with a budget of
$25 million, as opposed to Verhoeven's
budget of $45 million), and the script
went through many rewrites, before it
became the live-action/CGI Disney film:
*"DINOSAUR"* in 2000.
Watched this as a young kid with my dad… we both loved it
Your description of the horror and inevitability of Murphy's death - a scene that has freaked me out more than a lot of other violent scenes in films - also reminds me of The Crow - perhaps less so the film, but certainly the comic - another character who stands no chance and is brutally killed by a shot to the head and is then resurrected.
I remember sneaking into the living room super early in the morning as a 9/10 yr old in the late 80's to pop the VHS in & watch the movie whilst my parents were still in bed. I did the same with aliens, jaws & so many other movies I wasn't allowed to watch. The memories of those mornings, covertly watching films are some of my happiest.

I remember watching this as a 7 year old and emil’s death frightened the life out of me.

I got the VHS of both Robocop and The Terminator Collection on Christmas of 1992. I was 6. That was a fkin life changing Christmas Day.
Its one of those very very few films I consider absolutely perfect.
my dad took me to see this when I was 6. I guess we both thought it was gonna be a fun adventure movie. I remember when Kenny gets shot to pieces, I looked at my dad and he just raised an eyebrow and we kept watching. Fucking epic parenting
I borrowed the VHS off someone at school whose parents (unlike mine) just had no issue with buying 18 certificate movies for their 13 year old. I'd been vaguely aware of RoboCop enough to get the then recent reference in Red Dwarf when Lister is transformed in 'DNA' to fight the curry monster (which then veers into Jaws, of course). I too had to watch RoboCop in secret before everyone else was up(!), and at the time, it was by far and away the most violent movie I'd ever seen.
Going to rewatch the movie and listen to the commentary later tonight! Bring on more commentaries!
The fabric of Robocop's suit was noticeable on the DVD version too, and the cable guiding the missiles of ED-209, but I believe they got rid of them in the blu-ray edition. Unfortunately can't correct the other effects, the most talked about is probably Dick Jones' puppet but I think it's better left alone, after all films aren't supposed to be "perfect" or you just end up in the endless cycle of ultimate, final, definitive and so on editions that studios seem to love. I remember Rob Bottin implying that the reason for the black fabric was that when the suit was delivered Peter Weller could hardly move and they started cutting parts on the inside, so that might've been the reason why an otherwise excellent suit looks less good on those scenes.
The made for tv edits were an extra on one of the dvd releases. Still as funny as you remember.

If the Brian from Coronation Street you're referring to is Brian Tilsley, the actor who played him, Chris Quentin, has a tiny part as a reporter in Robocop 2, furiously taking notes on a pad in one scene. I can't remember if he has a line or not.
Ironically James Cameron only chose the aspect ratio for "Aliens" because that made all the visual effects work easier and cheaper. He said that from an artistic point of view he would have shot it in the same aspect ratio as "Alien" and would do so if he had the chance to do it over again.
I saw this on my 7th birthday, watched it every year since.

The machine pistol used by Robocop in the movie, is a modified Beretta M93R. According to the shooting script, this gun is referred to as the "Auto 9" despite this name not appearing in any spoken dialogue. The pistol's barrel was extended and modified to resemble a casket. The weapon has a selectable fire mode switch, semi-automatic and three-round burst. The basic design of the Beretta 93R machine pistol is based on the famous Beretta 92 pistol. However, the trigger mechanism is somewhat different from Beretta 92, as it is a single action only, with non-ambidextrous frame mounted safety and additional fire mode selector. Peter Weller mentioned in his interview on the 20th anniversary DVD, that the film's weapons master had to file paperwork with the ATF, since the Beretta M93R is a military weapon.
When Robocop arrests Clarence, Clarence says "I work for Dick Jones. Dick Jones! He's the number two guy at OCP. OCP runs the cops. You're a cop." But when Robo plays back the memory of Clarence saying that as he's going to Jones's office, the line changes from he's the #2 guy @ OCP to "He RUNS OCP." An error almost no one catches.

I had a similar experience to Oliver, except without even seeing the film! As a child in the 80s i innocently purchased the Robocop movie collectors cards and in my pack I got an image of Murphy’s mutilated hand, blown off by Clarence J. Boddicker. I kept it secret from my parents and disturbed me for years.
I remember the 8pm showing of Robocop on ITV and laughing at the once I called the old man airhead edit😄 well remembered.

From like 5 years old on, I had unsupervised access to the family VHS collection, most of which was recorded off HBO and Showtime. I watched a lot of stuff that I probably should not have watched. RoboCop was one of them 🤣
Please do a commentary for RoboCop 2. It gets alot of hate but ive always loved it. "I'M.HAVING.TROUBLE"

Similar to Redlettermedia's commentary, I love how the movie takes control of you every now and then. You guys stop talking and just viscerally react to the glory. Your reaction to the ED-209 scene had me smiling ear to ear.

There are two scenes in all my movie watching life (40+ years) that I struggle watching to this day. The boardroom scene in RoboCop and the fire extinguisher attack in Irreversible. Feel queasy every damn time.
That's funny, that scene in Irreversible really did fill me with anguish, more than probably any other movie, while the robocop scene I saw when I was 8 and it didn't bother me at all, but my friend I was watching it got sick. I think it was that the ED209 seemed cartoony, while the irreversible scene is so real. Also, leading up to it was so dark, and they used infrasound to mess with the audience. Irreversible is a movie I usually wouldn't recommend, it's such a downer. I did like Enter The Void by gaspar noe.
One of those rare film's that I would score a 10/10. It's near a perfect movie.
Even after all these years, I’ve still only ever seen the first Robocop
I recommend a watch to ROBOCOP 2. Not as good, but still solid.
As for ROBOCOP 3...so bad it's funny, I'd say.
The original is the only one that matters. The sequel stripped the intelligent satire, emotional weight and depth that Verhoven captured leaving only an ultra-violent popcorn action movie that you forget about 10 seconds after it ends. The second sequel then stripped the violence leaving a family friendly shell of a film that bears no resemblance to the original.
The second one is pretty good, but not as good. There's a 10 year old drug lord, and it shows lots of school kids behaving badly. Also, they keep trying to make new robocop prototypes that don't really work out.

Fantastic I just can’t get enough of these. The TV series I hated as a kid. It was on Granada on Saturday’s and it replaced repeats of the A-Team. I’m sure it was on before Baywatch. The chandelier thing used to drive me mad all the time he would just shoot things to land on their heads. The villain too looked like a cross between Freddy Kruger and a Dick Tracy gangster. I wasn’t in High School but I was over 10 so it just didn’t wash with me at all.

Robocop is a perfect film. Doesn’t mean it’s for everyone, but in terms of what it sets out to do, it executes it flawlessly.
I think what makes Murphy’s death so haunting is that there is a degree of humiliation to it. Clarence and his gang take their time to emasculate and torture him. It is a little hard to watch but it’s the over the top nature to the gore that makes it tolerable for me.

Well, they were a little bit worried that people would assume that Lewis would get turned into FemaleRoboCop so they filmed that hospital scene for the end, but it got scrapped.

I know you have to manage pleasing the algorithm to get views. But I have to say I prefer when you make commentaries to worse movies. This whole commentary I was distracted and just wanted to stop listening to you guys to watch the movie.
