In the aria the tenor has found out about his wife’s infidelity. However, “the show must go on” he then painfully cries while painting his face. Knowing the crowd waits for no one.

Pagliacci was the second of the nine operas by Leoncavallo. In a prologue and two acts that span about an hour’s time in performance, it tells the story of an acting troupe led by a jealous man who is ultimately driven to murder his actress wife and her lover. The jealous husband-the actor Canio-is written as a tenor role. The great tenors of the past century considered the role a challenge, because the character exhibits a wide range of moods, from manic humour to murderous rage. In the famed aria mentioned above, he muses upon the challenge of playing a comedic role while his heart is breaking.

But I can't really put into words the exact feeling. It's a mixture of resentment towards his wife, maybe wrath against her lover, even envy as stated.

It transcends language* into the realm of emotive reactivity.
All living things have dominion over emotion in one way, shape or form.
Not all of these creatures, blessed with this gift have the ability to elicit emotion.
The "love" given to each utterance/ lyric as it's gifted and accepted by "The Maestro" to us.
We can be thankful that we had the great fortune to be able to enjoy his talent for the time he was allotted.
Ladies and gentlemen I give you... Luciano Pavarotti
(*) I also cannot speak a word of Italian and still am brought to near tears @ 1:50. Beau-ti-ful
