  • Molly Put the Kettle On Lesson (2 of 2) with Rhys Jones
    bio.site/RhysJones
This is the sixth of a video series teaching you how I play the standard tunes of old-time fiddling. I'll play each tune up to speed, and then post a second video demonstrating specifics. If you have questions, leave them in the comments and I'll try to answer!
Molly Put the Kettle On is another classic tune I learned as a child from a recording of the 1920s band The Skillet Lickers. It is a rollicking piece with nonsensical lyrics that can be shouted or sung, and perfect for a square dance or a late night session.
In this video, you can hear me play the tune very slowly several times. I then teach the basic melody phrase by phrase, and talk about possible bowings. Finally, I talk about some variations as I play.

A long long time ago, my mom and I happened to watch a TV commercial for Colonel Sanders (now KFC) that featured the Colonel (himself!) saying "I reckon I've tried everything that could be done to a chicken." Needless to say, we laughed our asses off, and that ad only stayed on TV for a couple of days. But ever since then, I've used the phrase "the Colonel Sanders treatment" to describe what it's like to explore a tune so thoroughly that you've eventually tried "everything that could be done to a tune." One of the many things I love about your fiddling, Rhys, is that it's obvious you give tunes "the treatment." And now you're sharing all that stuff SO generously with people. Love it.

Okay. True story. I met a cool, woman in St. Petersburg Russia. Some months later I was home and contacted her on Skype. I was joking around and played a little of Molly Put the Kettle on. Her mother was in the same room in a formerly closed city and suddenly she started to sing Molly Put the Kettle on in English! I continued to play and she sang along. A strange but fine experience. I have loved yiur playing Rhys for a long time Thanks for this

Lovely, to hear all the variations and such. I learned this a while back (on banjo) from a recording on YT you did with Luke Richardson. There you called it Molly/Polly put the Kettle On. A fiddling friend of mine plays the Skillet Lickers with just two parts. I did some digging and I think the Polly part might be referencing Tommy Jarrell's Polly Put the Kettle On..

Why does that banjer have a purple bridge and why's it look like someone stuffed a manilia envelope under the bridge of that other one though?

  • @Curdog49

How about mentioning the tuning, or did I miss it?
