- Soldier’s Joy Fiddle Lesson (2 of 2) with Rhys Jones

This is the fourth of a new video series, teaching you how I play the standard tunes of old-time fiddling. I'll play each tune up to speed, and then post a second video demonstrating specifics. If you have questions, leave them in the comments and I'll try to answer!
Soldier's Joy is the first tune I learned when I was 6 years old, and I still play it almost every time I pick up the fiddle. It is my favorite!

SO much of fiddling is the bowing, and I very much appreciate these lovely patient lessons. Sincere thanks from a violinist trying to become a fiddler
Staggering. What seems like hundreds of really interesting and unbelievably useful suggestions in 30 minutes.
That's so good to hear - very gratifying. It inspires me to post more!
Wow! I'm so happy I stumbled over your channel! It looks and sounds amazing how you control the bow and don't use a shoulder or chin rest. Looking forward to going through all your material on youtube. Please, keep posting more amazing stuff! Cheers!
I’m so glad you’re inspired! I love playing without chin and shoulder rest - apparently I’m in good company with a large number of Baroque performers, but I think the violin just sounds better when it is unencumbered. I don’t even use fine tuners - it’s a naked fiddle.
Excellent playing and teaching! Thank you Rhys.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for the kind words.
I’m a total beginner, but I find your videos so helpful and interesting. It really is all about the bow and I’m thankful for your well-explained tips!
I’m really glad the videos are helping you, and thanks for the kind words. I’ll add a few more in the coming days!
1st tune I learned when I was 24. Now I like doing variations. Thanks for next variation.
You're welcome! Enjoy!
Great!!! Thank you Rhys 😊
So glad you’re liking the videos!
Great video and explanations!
As always Kari, you rock.
Great videos. Who made your fiddle/violin?
Thank you! My fiddle was made by Bronek Cisson, a Polish maker living in Chicago who makes violins out of the workshop of William Harris Lee.
