- In this iconic scene from Back to the Future Part III (1990), Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) comes to the rescue of his friend, Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Christopher Lloyd), who finds himself at the mercy of the notorious Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson). With quick thinking and skill, Marty uses a pie plate as an improvised frisbee, disarming Tannen and saving Doc from being shot. Impressed by Marty's bravery, the townsfolk nickname him "Clint Eastwood," a nod to the legendary Western actor.

Tannen, seeking to assert his dominance, challenges Marty to a showdown on Monday morning at 8 am. Initially, Marty declines the invitation, hoping to avoid unnecessary violence. However, Tannen strikes a nerve by questioning Marty's courage, asking if he's "yellow," a derogatory term implying cowardice. This provocation strikes at the heart of Marty's pride, compelling him to accept the challenge and prove his mettle. As tensions rise, the stage is set for an epic confrontation that will test Marty's resolve and ingenuity in the wild, wild West.

Love how Marty's mild insults are considered mighty strong fighting talk in 1885
Honestly I don't think anyone knew exactly what he meant but the meaning was clear 😂😂 Burford and his gang look hella confused
Well, i guess we are reverting back to the old days with soo many sensitive people at present time
@@boslog Considering Roe v. Wade just got overturned, people are worried that more freedoms will be taken away, and people are going backwards with racism/sexism just with different targets, that's not out of possibility.
Probably because in the west instead of insulting each other, you just shot the other guy you were having a problem with
"Dude" was also considered an insult then. Very different connotations. Also, with the difference in their size and (alleged) social hierarchy, Buford's perception didn't really seem too different from that of a Harley Davidson guy in a bar today.
The actor who plays Biff should've been in more old western movies knowing how great he did as Buford here
@Smokey McB Cool thanks
@Archer Alan Bro, why tf would you do that to a friend? Why don't you do that to people who are stealing accounts or something for good reasons?
He would’ve been good in Tombstone

@Eddy Teddy 🙄🙄
I've always admired Seamus' prudence and good judgment. He does not care what others think of him because he knows that he is a good man and a good family man, and he is not going to sacrifice that because someone provokes him as happened to his brother Martin, it is obvious that the crime anecdote of his brother makes a lasting impression on Marty
All it took was 3 movies, lol
Yeah, but that trait of Seamus’s must have been strong in the McFly family. So strong, that George got his ass kicked everyday at school until Marty “taught” him how to not “be so chicken” and fight his bullies back. Hmm…
@@FutureGirl2033 Obviously something got lost down the line from Seamus up to George. Seamus wasn't a coward, or at least we don't see him to be one, and it didn't seem to negatively influence his life.
It's always a balance in life, one should never react aggressively when others taunt you, but neither should you let yourself be pushed around. It took until Marty McFly for the family to learn that lesson, after he had gone time traveling as he did.
@@Checkmate1138 This is a brilliant response! Thank you! You’re right, it’s all about balance!
Knowing WHEN it’s important to fight, and knowing when it’s better to walk away from one, especially when it’s over something petty or over a matter of someone’s personal opinion.
Every generation is different. But at the same time, every generation learns the same lesson. In different ways, mind you, but they learn it, all the same
love how Marty calls Tannen a "jerk" and they aren't quite sure what he means or how to react haha
lol tannen calls him dude in 1885 lol

@@crowlee5111 The word "dude" came into existence in the 1870s, and was used for either a highly fashionable male, or one who obviously stood out in a rural environment (like Marty). So Buford's usage of the word is correct.
I love how Buford is Frustrated whenever his gang corrects him on something. To the point where he’s about to cry lol.
I feel like he is kinda underrated just for that lol
I like Four-Man Gangs they’re awesome and full of completely, but in general the Quartets are usually the best Group examples of this are
Penguins Of Madagascar,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,Ghostbusters, the Buford Gang and The Fantastic Four.

Announces to everyone that they're robbing a stage, then in front of everyone attempts to murder an unarmed man later on. These bad guys ain't very bright.
That’s the point
And no one does a thing
To be fair, Marty ain't all that bright either.
When the marshal showed up, all he had to say was, "Marshal, I just witnessed Buford Tannen attempt to murder Emmet Brown! He snuck a gun into this party, even though all weapons are supposed to be confiscated! Everybody here who saw it happen will testify that I'm telling the truth! Buford needs to be arrested for attempted murder, and sneaking a weapon into the town festival!"
Clara, Emmett, and all the other partygoers would have told the marshal they all saw it, and Buford would've been arrested.
Problem solved.
@@anamericaninbusan9389 It's unknown whether Doc and Marty knew that the marshal at the entrance were holding all weapons or not until people exited. But yes, I'm sure if Doc, Marty, Clara, and everyone else said something, Buford and his henchmen would have been arrested especially they were considered unarmed at that point including Buford since he only had one bullet in his gun which he used up. The only arresting Buford and his henchmen got was for being thieves for robbing the Pine City stage because of one of the henchmen opening his big mouth from 1:08-1:11 (bad luck for them but good luck for everyone else for knowing their plans to get evidence to make an arrest) and/or because there were cameras around and were caught on camera for robbing the Pine City stage.

@1:48 Just the look on Marty's face tells you he knows who the Marshall is in Hill Valley, and @2:15, he's still deep in shock about a Strickland that actually wants people to have a good time.
Lll
I think that look was for the musicians. They clearly seemed familiar, especially when they spun their instruments.
You must be a millennial. You totally missed the real reason why Marty gave *the band* , not Marshall Strickland, that double-take.
Smh.
@@FutureGirl2033 Why did Marty give the band a double-take?
@@vincentalykin The band that spun their instruments around on the stage is called ZZ Top.
They were known for doing that with their instruments in their music videos in the 1980s.
Look up the music videos titled “Legs”, and “Sharp Dressed Man” from the band ZZ Top.
Marty did that double-take because he is an 80s teen who had most likely seen ZZ Top’s music videos on MTV numerous times, and was caught by surprise that a band from 1885 was doing that instrument spinning like ZZ Top did in the 1980s!
"Let's go, boys! Let's these sissies have their party!"
Such an amazing line XD

Gotta love ZZ Top.
no im gonna get a shot gun and murder everybody here
Seamus is like Marty’s conscious. That’s where his spirit lies, in his head
It's strange that George is the one who had the McFly name, because according to resemblance, only Marty's mom would be descended from the people in Part III. There's no reason relation-wise for Maggie McFly to resemble Lorraine Baines [McFly], unless George McFly and Lorraine were actually both direct descendants, meaning...OH! So, THAT'S why Lorraine was so hot for Marty. It's just Like That in that family.
No, it's just that the Mcfly men have an affinity for women who look like, Maggie and Lorraine, even Jennifer resembles them.
@@halcaannen Yeah, but who wouldn't?
@@halcaannen Jennifer doesn’t even look like Marty’s mother though

I bought the 4k steelbooks, this is still a great trilogy after all these years
“Hey! Lighten up, jerk!”
“Lighten up” and “jerk” didn’t get their current meanings until the 1950s; to the people of 1885, Marty said:
“Hey! Light a lamp, pull!”
Meaning that: Light a lamp, pull.
Modern day meaning: "Get a clue" (idea, a _bright_ idea) People use this symbol when you get a good idea 💡
Thanks for the trivia. I'm not a native English speaker so this is new for me.
“It’s dog Buford, it’s shoot him down like a dog” 😂😂
1985: Hey, lighten up, jerk!
1885: "Confused"
2022: Hey, don't look at me, I am as confused as you are.
So Marty could have ended things quicker if he sent word to the authorities that the Tannen gang was robbing the stagecoach?
Interference there could cost biff
Buford screwed himself there, everyone there could testify under oath as having heard them.
Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen is Biff’s great-grandfather.

He gets emotional like he wants to cry 2:28 😂🤗
He made Marty Jump aswell
His ancestors are so cute, lol
Thomas Wilson is a fantastic actor. Every part of this trilogy he plays differntly and nuanced....bravo sir :)
Mighty strong words 🤣🤣
Traveling back in time and meeting your predecessors would have been such an illuminating experience. Going back to my time wouldn't change reality like fantasy implies, but it would totally change me.
That last minute has the most important lines of the trilogy. Told of an ancestor who let himself be provoked into fights and paid the consequences with his life. And that's why Marty didn't race Needles.
I like how they still respect the occasion even though they're on an arguement and moves the schedule for their killing.
I still laugh at how the guy who gave him the gun tells him if he loses, he'll take the gun back. And then Marty's response..... lol, you wouldn't be alive.... so why care?
Of course, he's reacting to the thought of getting killed, not losing the gun. But, still.... funny.
I need to watch these films again. I realise I never got half the humor when I was younger
That's dark humor right there.
“This is a party. Let’s have some fun!”
The only time a Strickland ever encouraged slacking.
"Assuring I hope youre considering the future, Mr. Eastwood.
- I think about it all the time."
the whole saga summarized
What about Monday? We doing anything Monday? 😂😂
I whistle a happy tune and every single time. The happiness in the tune convinces me that I'm not afraid
You gotta love the incompetence of the law in this movie. Buford's cronies announced loudly they were robbing the Pine City Stage, and the Sheriff did nothing. 🤣
Probably because it was outside of Hill Valley, but still they did admit it pretty loudly
@@mg19cal That could be.
Marshall Strickland had both the skills and the evidence to stop Buford, and I’m pretty sure he planned to kill him, he just couldn’t catch him at the right time; he slept outside town, kept thugs with him at all times, and hung out in crowded areas where a civilian could get shot in the crossfire.
He was just waiting for the right moment to catch him, thankfully Marty beat him and he was arrested alive :)
In a deleted scene, the Marshall and his boy were there to intercept them, however Tannen disarms the Marshall and tells him to leave, the Marshall complies and Tannen shoots him in the back, killing him. Thats why the Marshall's deputy arrests Buford and his gang and not the Marshall himself.
Thomas F. Wilson should be in more in westerns
At least Strickland had hair in this movie!
"you ready to back em up with more than just a pie plate" "well considering that's all it took to stop you from shooting this time, i can only imagine what would happen if i had a gun."
Everyone applauds the climax when mcfly defeats him with his bare hands and a metal oven door, but nobody talks about the fact that he stopped him with a *pie plate* earlier in the movie (except you and I!)
The reason Tannan didnt understand marty when he said Lighten up jerk is becaise back then jerk meant pull and wasnt made into an insult until the later half of the 20th century so basically Tannan heard it as " Light up Pull !"
And when Tannan called him “dude” earlier people watching may not understand that is more of an insult in the old west cause it referred to someone from the big cities who dressed too sharply and didn’t know anything
“8:00, I do my killing after breakfast.”
You gotta admit, that’s a pretty badass line.
2:27 - The way he says this, almost crying... Tom really was phenomenal as Biff/Griff/Buford.
0:13 😂 gets me every time
Tannen: What's wrong dude!? You yellow!?
Me, an Asian:
LOL. Asians were commonly referred to as 'the Yellow Man" because of our so called yellowish tint to our skin compared to Northern Europeans (who had a pinkish hue to their fair skin). But in the 20th century it fell out of favor since it was also a common insult to imply "cowardice". No one, even those who didn't like Asians would EVER call them Cowards. Anyone who faced them in battle (Filipinos in the War of 1898 / Japanese in WW2 / Chinese and Koreans in the Korean War / Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians in the Vietnam War) knew that they would hurl themselves into the battle. Cowards don't do Human waves (though it is fanatical, you can't say they're cowards). Now there are other 'armies' who were worthless and ran away in other continents (whom we won't discuss here LOL) but the American experience in the 20th Century made the entire culture STOP using the word Yellow and one of the reasons is that no one ever considered Asians to be Cowards (afraid to fight).
3:42 I like how Seamus pronounces rile as "royal"
Tom Wilson’s tannen characters are up there for the most underrated villains ever!
2:28 In this particular section of the scene, it would seem that Buford is visibly upset.
If Marty hadn't thrown the dish like a frisbee at Tannen, disarming him, then Emmett is history.
I mean still that's a one in a million throw
The original frisbee WAS a pie plate
That throw was 100% a random crit
Seamus and his wife are a good depiction of what it took for commoners to survive back then.
Wow, the doubleshot is seamless.
There's a considerable amount of "crispness" around the outside edge of Marty, but other than that, its pretty great.
Really good memories
I love how when Marty tells Tannen to lighten up, he sounds so genuinely fed up with the Tannen Family LOL

Never remake or prequel these movies.
Robert Zemekis and the actors already agree on that.
We all fell in love with Clara.
The movie is right about how you should think before you speak. However notice how Marty gained respect from everyone when he stood up to Buford. If someone tries to publicly humiliate you, don’t walk away because everyone else will see that you’re a bitch. Only walk away when there’s no gain from the situation.
It wasn't respect.
Nobody cared if Marty lived or died.
It was celebrity.
Why _should_ you not walk away? Buford doesn’t respect anyone.
Marty would have had that respect if he had walked away after saving Doc. Seamus was correct.
3:12 after Marty was denied his Pepsi Free, he took the free Colt with open arms
Love how Marty thought quick with a pie plate. And yeah his words were insulting back then? Would mean nothing now . And I love the entire series how well casted it was and they couldn’t have picked a better actress to play Miss Clayton kudos to Mary for being a good actress!
Well, this is at least the second time Marty saves doc's life; nonetheless, he names his kids Jules and Verne. 😆

Sheriff could tell Buford was a slacker.
As Marshall Strickland
Whenever i see Marty throw the pie plate at Tannen, it makes me wonder how many times Michal J. Fox had to throw it during the making of this film, because chances are he didn't get it right on the first take.
In fact i also wonder if anyone ever tested if whether or not a pie plate could ever make someone with a gun actually miss a target in real life, because pie plates are made out of tin and since tin is such a thin and light material it can make a pie plate fly like a frisbee, but it's such a light material that there's no way a tin pie plate could ever possess enough weight or force to actually cause someone with a gun to miss what they're aiming at.
its two different takes, MJ Fox is just throwing it at the camera, someone else just threw the plate at close range when it switches to tannen.
So Fox probably didn't have to do too many takes, since his not actually trying to hit the gun.
If you had a gun to someone and were just about to pull the trigger when something comes flying at your hand where the gun is held, hitting it. I'm pretty sure anyone would flinch and miss their mark.

As a kid Marty looked to me like an adult, the hero of the movie. (Although of course the movie frames his reaction to "yellow" as a vice, realistically.) As an adult, I just want to help him out the way the people here are. Still the hero, but needs to be told what the stakes are since he's not acting on the high school stage anymore.
Well he was 29 at this time in 1990. Wasn’t a teenager at all even with the first movie
@@IamPatrickStar I meant that when I was a kid, he looked like an adult.
But even as an adult, I'm able to suspend disbelief and make-believe he's a kid because of how he's being played. It helps that I'm now older than Michael J. Fox was when he played Marty.
