Too many people want to live like heroes. Too few of them want to, or even expect to, die like them. How's that? See the deaths of Jesus, Leonidas, William Wallace, etc. The answer, then, is simple. Let those who wish to live like heroes also die like them.

I’m sick of this. I actually visited Japan in January, and they couldn’t literally care less about this kind of stuff. A good example of this being that you can only wear a yukata/kimono if you’re Japanese. There were places that you can buy and rent kimonos in places like Tokyo, and the locals were actively trying to sell them to me. My cousin’s Japanese teacher, who speaks 90% english, also confirms many of this stuff. All they ask is common human courtesy (aka common simple respect), which western countries really seem to lack anymore. The biggest issue is all of these people who aren’t even of these races/ethnicities doing false justice.
I remember someone telling me and other people that the people in Japan enjoy seeing Westerners + other visitors wearing some of the Japanese clothing. I usually picture these people to equate Japanese culture with anime, sushi and Kimonos.

I'm from Spain and apparently Japanese people really enjoy our culture, like flamenco music and dance, Spanish food, the Barça FB... When I went over there I met a Japanese girl whose nickname was "Mañana" (morning/tomorrow in spanish) and I was like "that's a really weird nickname haha, no one's called like that in my country". She loved Spain and I loved Japan, and we both had our innocently distorted ideas of each other's culture, but we learned from each other and laughed about the cliches. She thought we ate paellas every day and slept five hours siestas and that we walked around in the traditional red outfits that we wear in fairs. She gave me my nickname, Tsuki, and I still call her Mañana, even though it sounds weird, even if she's not Spanish, even if I'm not Japanese, it was a beautiful exchange where we both respected each other. I'm kinda worried this kind of exchange is going to become impossible at this rate.
I'm more shocked that these people waste their time entertaining twitter idiots. "The fact I have to prove I'm Asian". The beauty of the thing is you don't. If you are a blued eyedd blonde and to call yourself Kyoko so be it.

Hot take: People complaining about cultural appropriation are promoting racism and segregation by shutting down attempts to bridge the gap between races.
Cultural appreciation was never a bad thing to begin with. It is the act of sharing culture between different groups of people. Its basically the same thing as trading. Am I commiting an "appropriation of goods" every time I buy a pen at a chinese supermarket? Of course not, I want to buy that pen, and the owner wants to sell me the pen. We share the things we are proud of, and adopt the things we admire.
@@pablopereyra7126 there's a difference between appropriation and appreciation. To appropriate is to steal something and claim it was yours all along. To appreciate is to use something respectfully because you like it. For example, a white guy wearing a Iroquois war bonnet is appropriation, because you have to earn the right to wear one in Iroquois culture. On the other hand, me wearing a huge sombrero is appreciation. I live in a place near Mexico where it's really hot and sunny. If a hispanic person saw me with the sombrero they'd probably think one of three things: I lost a bet, I'm going to a party and didn't want to forget my hat, or it's hot and sunny out and this was the best hat available.

Is so weird seeing American white people trying so hard to be an perfect "ally" (that's usually just white saviour complex, tbh) that start speaking over minorities voices. Like, as a Mexican, I have seen a lot of people reacting violent when someone makes simple Día de los Muertos or Catrinas or Aztecs, and every time someone tells them that we actually don't mind it and that we are grateful with the representation, they act like we don't know what's best for us. Because you know, there's nothing more anti-racist that telling POC that they don't know anything and that we must listen only to white voices.
This reminded me of some article I read a while back about how books about minority groups (specifically novels where the narrator is a part of the minority groups) almost always did better if someone from the majority group (like a white person if it's about Mexicans, or a straight person if it's about a gay person) wrote it, because the masses, without actually knowing about the minority group, feel the books written by the majority group are "more accurate." I think this specific problem is worse for books about POC than books about queer people though.
Don't confuse a VERY vocal minority that resides on Twitter with average Americans. It's just that these nutjobs also control our schools and media (and, unfortunately but consequently, our current government). The average American would prefer to leave everyone alone and be left alone.

Hey homie, love your twitter videos. Just wanted to leave a little pronunciation tip in case you're curious. The name 'Mei' (in Japan) is pronounced the same as the English month 'May' just like the 'Hei' in your name is (I assume) pronounced 'hey' as opposed to 'hai.'
I have a friend that is Chinese and her family calls her "Mei" as a nickname because 'Mei mei' in Chinese translates to little sister. Honestly, I think you should have the rights to be called whatever you allow the people around you to call you. Can these stupid 5th graders just shut up, nobody cares.
These are the same people who demand that people can identify as whatever they want. A black woman has to be called a white man if they identify as that. But then they throw a tantrum if a white or Asian person does it. It's all a game. Only way to win is to not play.
This comment!! My Chinese name is Meili, and growing up, almost everyone around me called me by my Chinese name, even people who weren’t Chinese. It never bothered me, and if I really was I would’ve told people to stop. What DOES bother me is that people are accusing people of cultural appropriation by literally just setting a foreign name on their profile And now I feel that the people of Twitter are just at this point debating on what should be cultural appropriation what shouldn’t be, which is totally not a good way to look at cultural appropriation
Ikr, my parents also call me Mei mei because it means little sister, but some white Karen literally screamed at me for pretending to be Asian. Like, I'm literally Chinese I look Chinese person wtf do you mean??
Indonesian here! Mei is actually a COMMON name among Indonesian! Indonesian people is actually diverse but you'll see Muslim people and Chinese people is pretty common. so, Mei in Indonesia means the month of May, you know, the month came after April and before June! There's lots of girls who are born in may named as Mei ^^! and i do think mei has it's own meaning for my Chinese friends! sorry for bad English, i hope this explain! edit: it is really common for parents to name their child with whatever they desire, so we do have unique names inspired from around the world!
when will americans know that "cultural appropriation" isn't a thing outside of the country? I'm a south asian, and here, if people see a foreigner dressing up in our cultural clothes or enjoying the cuisine, we feel so happy that our culture is appreciated and acknowledged, weird they see it as an offense in the west. edit: yes, cultural appropriation is infact a thing outside as well, which i apologise for the mistake but something as using our names, wearing the clothes etc. as long as its given its standard respect and you're aware and knowledgeable in its origins, its completely fine.

These SJW's can't understand the simple fact that most cultures outside of America like to be shared and take it as endearing when a foreign person take a liking to it. As a Hungarian I can honestly say when I see non Hungarians talk about or try to replicate our foods, embroidery , national dresses or they try to learn the national dances i feel really proud. That my home is a nice memory for someone so much so that they took that memory home and want to share it the best they could. I will never understand the logic behind this....
It's because there ain't a logic, I'm Venezuelan, we don't have much of a culture but even at the slightest of the mentions I feel happy, it's just plain dumb Also, is because the USA barely has any culture of its own so they try to protect what they have at all costs
As a fellow Hungarian I agree with you. I once seen these social justice warriors getting mad at people who were dressed up in kimonos for halloween. Idk, I would be very happy if someone dressed up in traditional Hungarian clothes with Matyó hímzés or something like that even if that's only for halloween. Not that I wear traditional clothes every day.
Why do people care so much though? Like nobody cares about practically the whole world wearing western clothing (shirt/t-shirt and shorts/trousers/skirts/dresses/volcanoes) but western people can’t wear other culture’s clothing?...
I totally agree. I'm also Hungarian (from Transilvania) and it brings me special joy to see other nations use parts of our culture. For example, Romanians are the majority here and with my Romanian friends, we give each other nicknames in each other's language as an act of respect
I definitely agree. I'm from Turkey and it gives us so much joy when we see tourists or people who came here to stay trying to learn the language and speak it, enjoying the cuisine, engaging in learning the folk dances and other national activities! I can literally see this happiness in the faces of people I know when this happens, not just me. I'm also learning japanese and I love japanese culture. I don't get it why someone wouldn't like it when a good aspect of their culture goes viral and starts to receive love from people all around the world.
Imagine someone loves your culture so much that on one of their accounts they choose a name of your culture because they really like how it sounds. I think that would be awesome, and I would absolutely not be angry by any means! Did one of them asked at least *one* japanese person if they were bored about people having accounts with japanese names?
I believe the reason people are upset, primarily Asian Americans, is because they grew up having their Asian names mispronounced or made fun of and most of them had to change their name just to fit in, so now that people are changing their names to Asian ones it makes people who grew up teased for that exact thing feel mocked

Sigh I'd be in trouble then 🤣 And Mark is actually Greek not Hebrew..... Even people 2000 years ago were guilty of cultural appropriation 🤣🤣🤣. Don't get me started on the Romans lol The problem with cultural appropriation is literally every culture has adopted things from other cultures. What happened to the time where we can share our cultures with each other.
I'm confused, I might not be Japanese but seeing my culture being used by a foreigner is such a honourable thing to me. I see no wrong doing unless they're just being plain offensive.
There’s a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation I guess it has most to do with the intentions of the person borrowing the culture (if they’re doing it out of respect for the culture, or to be “popular”). Also, if the people who’s culture it is feels offense.
@@silversunset Cultural appropriation is generally when you are using something that carries lots of meaning behind it, without respecting what that thing means and what it is, like the classic example of a native american headdress, it's something that is earned, by elders, through gaining the respect of their people. some rando wearing one is completely disregarding and disrespecting the importance of that lifetime achievement

I've had non-Asian people accusing me of trying to "be white" and "disrespecting my own culture" for not using my "real Asian name." It's more fun now that I changed my last name to my husband's, because when people see my name, they don't expect to see an East Asian woman.
Actually we have a similar story with my aunt! She's a Moroccan Jew and her name is יסכה in Hebrew, pronounced "Yiska". Her English name is Jessica, and since she lives in the states she uses that more often.
"never heard of someone named their kid after month" literally Indonesia people name their kid: Febri (februari), April (yes), maimun(Mei), Yuni (June), Yuli (July), Agustin(August), Oktavia(october), Nova/Novi(november), Desi(desember). trust me there is a lot of Indonesian people name Their kid after month

I am a practising international amateur sumo wrestler who is trained by a former professional and has spent time training in japan with professional wrestlers, and lived in their heyas (stables) And I have spent time in China and Taiwan studying beneath monastic orders as well as studying beneath taoist teachers and priests. As an Indonesian, born and raised in Indonesia and have only lived abroad for about a year, I hate how simplistic the cultural appropriation discourse. Just a reminder that Asians are humans and therefore, not a monolith. I am not referring to the differences between Asian countries, I am referring to the differences with Asians who grew up in Asia and those who grew up in the west. People who grew up in their ancestral, obviously, have spent their entire lives surrounded by their own heritage. People around them share their languages and tastebuds. Meanwhile, if they grew up outside their ancestral homelands, they might experience discriminations. They might have their cultures disrespected as well. With that mind, it is obvious neither group can speak for each other. As an Indonesian who grew up and live in Indonesia, it feels nice when foreigners - white westerners or not - genuinely appreciate our heritage. In fact, it is a reminder that my fellow countrymen and I should appreciate even more. But, at the same time, I also understand if an Asian-American who grew up bullied for being Asian…. Witnesses that their heritage is suddenly seen as “cool” once white people love it as well. I genuinely can see the perspective. My point is, while I do think we should be allowed to “embrace” any cultures as we wish, we should remember that humans are not a monolith. Your experiences represent yourself. While they are valid, they cannot represent others.

I think this specific problem is worse for books about POC than books about queer people though.

When did we fucked up THAT badly for it to escalate on top of Burj Khalifa?
This comment!! My Chinese name is Meili, and growing up, almost everyone around me called me by my Chinese name, even people who weren’t Chinese. It never bothered me, and if I really was I would’ve told people to stop. What DOES bother me is that people are accusing people of cultural appropriation by literally just setting a foreign name on their profile
And now I feel that the people of Twitter are just at this point debating on what should be cultural appropriation what shouldn’t be, which is totally not a good way to look at cultural appropriation
Ikr, my parents also call me Mei mei because it means little sister, but some white Karen literally screamed at me for pretending to be Asian. Like, I'm literally Chinese I look Chinese person wtf do you mean??

In chinese and japanese it is means beautiful and is usually one half of a female name.

when will americans know that "cultural appropriation" isn't a thing outside of the country? I'm a south asian, and here, if people see a foreigner dressing up in our cultural clothes or enjoying the cuisine, we feel so happy that our culture is appreciated and acknowledged, weird they see it as an offense in the west.
edit: yes, cultural appropriation is infact a thing outside as well, which i apologise for the mistake but something as using our names, wearing the clothes etc. as long as its given its standard respect and you're aware and knowledgeable in its origins, its completely fine.
eh, the internet isn't quite the best representation of life. at least where i live, not many are like that

It's because there ain't a logic, I'm Venezuelan, we don't have much of a culture but even at the slightest of the mentions I feel happy, it's just plain dumb
Also, is because the USA barely has any culture of its own so they try to protect what they have at all costs

I was in a discord call and someone "called me out" for being racist towards Asian people, and that I have no understanding of their culture and history.
I am Korean, born to two Korean parents, raised rurally and held close to tradition.
I am a practising international amateur sumo wrestler who is trained by a former professional and has spent time training in japan with professional wrestlers, and lived in their heyas (stables)
And I have spent time in China and Taiwan studying beneath monastic orders as well as studying beneath taoist teachers and priests.
Not to mention the fact since Asia is not just Korea, China and Japan I've seen plenty others such as Vietnam, The Philippines, India, Mongolia and Tibet, lived with their people and observed their traditions and cultures.
Sorry, I clearly don't know about Asia.
Tibet is in China now!
-1000 social credit for speaking about taiwan.
-1000 social credit tibet is not a country
Similar things for me too.
@@voicelessuvularplosive does a place need to be a whole separate country to have it's own culture?
not saying this in a mean way, i'm genuinely curious because every city and town has it's own teachings and traditions were i'm from and i thought this was normal
As an Indonesian I can confirm that a lot of us, especially the younger generation, are using foreign names. Heck I'm literally using an English name.
well hello Robbie
My name is basically a recycle of my real name
as an indonesian too i'm just like you
Same bro im just here using an english name. I often find SOME people use foreign names because for some aesthetics🤦♀️
i dont think the name Mei even came from japanese lol
"Imagine naming your kid after a month."
Fun fact: July and August were named after people. Originally they were called Quintilis and Sextilis, meaning "fifth month" and "sixth month" respectively.
(i know the person was being sarcastic I just wanted to joke pff)
Imagine naming your month after people
Imagine naming your kid after a month which was named after a person
July is named after Julius Caeser
like that other guy said, july is short for julius and august is short for augustus apparently
Hello fellow history nerds
You just seem genuinely happy to make these videos its kinds infectious
“Stop disrespecting Asian culture by appropriating Japanese names” like bruh I just think it’s a cool name like dayum
I can bet all my money that the person who said that is definitely not japanese
Damn, I didn't know "dayum" was a name 🤣
"Appropriating Japanese Names"
This guy probably never heard the concept of Nicknames and Online Tags.
It's apparently not even Japanese anyways, it's Chinese ✋😭
@@mostannoyingscaramain it's Indonesian too ☕🗿
Yeah thats the problem because your literally using the names for aesthetics, Japan is not just an aesthetic, it has its own history and cultural meanings for names.
@@eggcatthefirst1010 not all names have cultural meanings, and also do you think that every single person with a japanese name that is japanese ethnically really cares that much about the cultural significance of their name? i have a name from russia and it has slavic roots, yet no russian person gives a shit that im polynesian and have a russian name!
Mei exists in both Japan and China, but they have different meanings.
And in Indonesia too, as the video said.
If you look at this situation in reverse; if a Japanese person had a typically white name, no one would care; it just shows how dumb and unnecessary this is, some people should stop overreacting
Ur name is amanda? :/ please stop appropriating american names. we know ur name is mei or some basic asian name.
@@Iskou307 if your talking about Chinese names? Then there's a looooooooooooooooong list of what said name might be lol
They do I have a Italian name cos I'm quarter Italian but people where expecting me to have a second Japanese first name
It's common for people in East Asia to give themselves English names especially if the plan on visiting the west or learning English. When they start attending English class the very first assignment is to find an English name.
Exactly I mean I'm brown Asian and tbh here in Asia no one cares if you have your account name as a Asian name like literally so many Asian have American names like my cousin his name is Felix
Like seriously I can't with Twitter 😭
I once had a similar experience. I'm asian, Chinese specifically and someone said "no you're not" just because I could speak English well like what, I was both flattered and offended.
My brother once got accused of appropriating a japanese name, because he is called Meiko (a japanese name for women). Funny enough, it is also a name for men derrived from old high german
I have a cousin named Yuri. It's an eastern European male name in his context, but I think people tend to think of it as a Japanese women's name. I always wonder if he's ever run into problems with these sorts.
@@BJGvideos does makarov know him?
@@BJGvideos does your cousin named yuri briar?
@@shinzero7260 Ah, no.
@@BJGvideos I'm suprised that yuri is male name in Eastern European, does it has somekind of meaning there?
Ps. Yuri briar actually is a character name in Japanese anime Spy x Family 😅
I’ve met so many talented and amazing people on Twitter, but there’s also stuff like this.
Truly the duality of man
Twitter: Don't say man, your excluding women, it's human.
That's why I stay on Twitter but the toxic people just drown out stuff.
This reminds me of that tweet where someone got upset that a dark skinned anime character “didn’t sound black” in the English dub
And the voice actress.. was black 💀
Can we burn Twitter yet
Lmao, reminds me of how they tried to cancel a VA once for having done voice acting in a bl anime
A voice actor, doing voice acting
Twitter is gonna push out all good ccs out of their platform istg
And their excuse was “black should sound black” 💀
Yo I relate to that so much. I don’t sound black- I sound more like a suburban white girl tbh. So whenever I actually show my face or skin tone everyone’s so confused or surprised by it.
I’m not that offended by it but I have had some people from school and stuff say I’m “a white person in a black body” like- what? ._.
@@happkirb9903 You need to tell those ignorant close minded racists that accents have no race. There are literally black people raised with Italians in New York and sound EXACTLY the same. Why can't people get this through their head smh.
If we burn twitter, they're going to move to another platform
