I saw the closing night performance tonight and cried the whole way through, what a powerful show and god I hope it USHERs in a new wave of black queer stories getting the mainstream spotlight they deserve
Just watched this this afternoon. It was a wonderful show. Even though the Tony performance was great, I feel like it didn't do the show justice. The only show I've seen multiple times was Phantom because I wanted to go on field trips in high school. I plan on seeing this a couple more times, though. It's not a show you bring the whole family and kids to after Sunday mass, but feel free to go after mass.
@E Of course the Tony Awards performance (and all the late-night/other TV performances) can't do this show justice. Aside from the fact that they had to re-write the lyrics so standards & practices would let them perform, in less than 4 minutes they had to get rid of (the f-word, n-word, "asshole", & the anti-gay f-word, not to mention some other anti-black phrases) the show really gets into it (hunny) after these songs (Intermisssion Song & Today) are over. I've lost count of how many times I've seen the show, but I discover new aspects to enjoy every single time. Michael R Jackson is a genius.
If Broadway were an ideal world and a mecca for inclusion this show would have lasted as long as The Phantom Of The Opera lasts and all the boring white tourist shows would close every month.
Having seen this twice in London and listening to the soundtrack on a loop it makes me laugh at all the censoring! An amazing show that hope to see a couple more times before it's run finishes in September!
It sucks that the tony performance couldn’t sell this show better. Unfortunately though, all the songs that would have worked better for selling this show through a tonys performance would spoil parts of the experience of the show, so this is probably the only song they could have performed without spoiling the show (or having to censor most of the lyrics tbh).
James Jackson Jr is hilarious! In any other show, he'd have been the featured actor Tony nominee. If you haven't seen this show, please make it your business to get to the Lyceum Theater asap (discounts & rush tickets are available, which is how I've justified seeing it many, many times)
Aderius Scott It has so many gay men working on this piece, I think they did a better job of gay representation than just making it seem like all of them are flaming queens. But of course the first song all about being a fat effeminate black gay man will make it seem a little more like that.
@@ciampoohDid you see it in Los Angeles or New York? It's a provocative, emotional, difficult show. Not entirely sure how I felt about it, but also, it's so intensely personal to the writers' experience that I'm not sure anyone else's critique matters.
