I buzzed my hair off after MONTHS of debate. It was harder than I expected. Experience it with me.

I know this is a long video. I wasn't sure how to approach it, and so I decided to just take you on the journey with me. No editing, no pre-planning. This is real life, and you can't script real life. I don't love the quality of this video or the length, but it is what it is.
This was so much harder than I expected. I was honestly shocked at how thin my hair really is. I also struggled with doing this alone, which I think contributed to the difficulty and the time it took me to finally make the decision to buzz it all off. If you have experienced or are experiencing something similar, please share with your wig sisters in the comments. I know there are MANY who are struggling with this at this very moment.
Here are the clippers* I purchased: amzn.to/2R5ME72

I’m watching this video on February 28, 2022, so two years plus one month since you filmed yourself struggling with how much to remove, from where, what to leave, and also learning how the clippers worked. That’s a lot and I can relate, even though I’m still very much at the beginning of this part of my journey. It’s been about three weeks since I decided I wanted to buzz off my hair, but only eight days since I actually held the clippers to my head for the first time. I’ve been divorced since 1990, and my four children are long gone from home, so I decided I’d just do it myself. First I watched several RUclips videos of women buzzing off their hair for all different reasons, which helped a bit to desensitize me and acted as somewhat of a tutorial on how to do it. I got my clippers from Amazon (they have the colored guards like yours) and one evening before bed I took the plunge. I started with a long guard, but soon realized it was going to have to be an all or nothing kind of deal. There was not going to be any cute outcome (like Taz), I simply didn’t have enough to work with on the top. So I kept using a shorter guard until I was using the next to the shortest one! And then the next morning before my shower, I went over a couple more times with the very shortest guard! It took almost a week before I stopped jumping when I saw myself in a mirror, and I’m still constantly running my hand over and over my head in wonder and amazement. 😊 Regrets? Not really, and getting ready to leave the house suddenly became a whole lot easier. I revealed my secret first to my very best friend of nearly 50 years over a video chat. She had no idea and it was rather satisfying to give her a little jolt like that. In fact, I quite like revealing my secret that way so I did it again for my daughter a couple days later. Friend thinks I’m brave and awesome for doing it; daughter still looks at me quizzically because she knows what’s under the wig. I’m not sure if I’m going to unveil for my 94-year-old mother. Time will tell. The hardest part for me is how my mind is constantly conjuring up scenarios where I won’t be able to wear my wigs-cataract surgery in two weeks-will they let me keep my wig on during the procedure? Or my family reunion in early May with my four children, their spouses, and all my grandchildren. We have a house on the Outer Banks in North Carolina-it’s the beach, windy, they don’t even know about the wigs yet, much less what’s hiding underneath. All of these things cause me a lot of anxiety, but I still don’t regret what I’ve done, and right now I can’t think of a good reason to ever grow out my bio hair. What’s the point when past pictures tell the tale of how I wasn’t really getting away with my techniques to hide the thinning. I’m going to binge the rest of your videos on this subject! Thank you for sharing your heart and baring your soul. Now that’s what real courage looks like. What is your saying, “We’re in this together”?

Oh this brings tears. I started loosing hair 12 years ago, it was a very slow process at first, and my hair was to my waist. Then in 2014 I realized it was so thin I went in and had my pony tail cut off and tried wearing it short, just above my shoulders. The density of my pony tail was the size of my pinky finger. I then in 2016 decided to go ahead with wigs. Then one day I just decided to take the clippers I use on my husbands head and I too used the longest guard and shaved it off. I cried! But, it became easier to shave it off from that day forward, and I got shorter and shorter until I used just the normal guard with the extender all the way out. My head freezes in the winter, so I let it be longer then, and very short in summer.

This brought me to tears. So many emotions. Sadness for you, sadness for me. But also I felt less alone. My bio hair looks exactly like yours did in the beginning of the video. EXACTLY. The sporadic thinning, the wispiness of the remaining hair. To say I can relate to you does not even begin to cover it. Thank you. Thank you for putting this out there. You look beautiful.

My heart goes out to you as I watch this because I know exactly what you are going through! I was in the same boat at the beginning of last summer when I buzzed what was left off. There are still some moments I look in the mirror and feel overwhelmed looking at my bald head but mostly I just feel free!!

I cut all my hair off with scissors literally 1 inch all over 3 weeks sgo with my husband's help. My hair was coming out with the head rash Pityriasis Rosea and getting thinner and thinner and left some bald spots that was devastating. I was so ready and was very surprised when as my husband was cutting, tears were streaming down my face which made it super hard for him. So shocking that I was so emotional. However, BEST THING EVER! Got my head cleared of the rash and washing my head in the shower and plopping on my wig without prep is wonderful. I don't like to walk around the house bare headed either. I always wear knitted slouch hats that I make to match my pjs. Cotton in the summer and wear wigs when dressed. I don't know if I will let it grow again because if it grows it will still be thin. I do feel free and the emotion around it is gone.

I buzz down with no guards. I love the uniform look of my buzz cut, instead of my balding old man hair. I do it at home myself every week. No appointments, tipping, taking time out of my schedule to go to the hairdresser, or risking everyone in the salon staring. It is freeing!

I saw an interview with Ricky lake over the weekend, she buzzed her hair. It had been like yours, and she said she felt so much freer now. That’s kind of how I feel. It is hard, you are grieving a loss of part of your body. I’ve buzzed mine three times so far, and unless there’s a big change, I’m going to just keep it this way. For me it’s a lot Easier. The family’s used to it, and I’ve got some great wigs. Thank you Lord! You are awesome, lots and lots of comments, I read them. I’m really happy you did this video. God bless you my friend! (When I buzzed mine, I never even thought of using a guard. This last time I used one, and it didn’t make a difference. I don’t know anything about clippers either. I guess were all on a very similar journey!)

Hi Denise, can I just say that I think you look fab with your hair buzzed! It totally suits you. I made this same decision about 5 weeks ago as my hair was so thin. I am now completely bald and feel empowered! At least now when I look in the mirror I see my features instead of obsessing over how little hair I had.Thank you SO much for sharing this, a very brave thing to do. Hugs from Scotland. Debs ❤

You are very brave to share. I’m with you. I felt very similarly. After only a few months from when I started losing it to major loss due to AA, I also buzzed it. I use a 1 guard all over what is left. At first I wore a light scarf or bandana, now I just let it be free. It takes time to adjust and some days are harder than others. You aren’t alone in this.

The final result was the best, you look really good. The focus is now on your beautiful eyes and face. The thin wispy hair distracted from your expression and communication.

Thank you Sister! I cried at some point. The struggle is so recognizable. Thanks for not cutting and editing things out. Thiis is so raw and honest and I applaud you for your bravery. You do really look cute by the way with the #3 buzz cut!!!

First let me say, you are PRECIOUS! I'm just starting my own journey on this hair loss/thinning and the courage (and struggles) you have shown to everyone is such an encouragement to me personally. Yes, I cried. I cried because I know what I'm facing, I cried because I wish I could have been there to help you since I've buzzed/ scissor cut my husband's hair and sons hair for over 25 yrs, and I cried because of just the beautiful soul you are. I absolutely love your videos and just know that you are helping us women more than you realize. I also want to say that I thought it was precious how you were taking into consideration your husband's feelings about this too. Their support means more to us than anybody else's. God bless you and what you are doing for others. Many thanks!

This was filmed 4 years ago, but it's brand new to me. I am I'm tears. I am SO PROUD of you, Denise. You are so brave. So brave to film this. I could see and feel your grief, and I saw a glimmer of relief, too. So thankful I found you.

You are so, so brave to let us see you and go with you through this journey. It will help so many women. At the end I was shouting, "You look like me!!". I am buzzed all over with just long pieces for side burns. It looks silly as heck but I love the feel of my head after buzzing, love how my wigs fit on my head and showering is a breeze. The only thing I don't like is the way I look and though I mostly feel okay walking around the house, I tend to wear a super soft winter hat or bandana. I just bought a really cute bamboo head scarf. I'll come back and link it. You might love it. It seems like it would be very cool for hotter weather but it's also feminine, which is not an adjective I would use for the winter hat!! Thank you again, so very much. You are a peach. We are lucky to have you in this wig sister community.

Hi Denise! I watched your video last night. 3-12-2024. It was a struggle to watch you go through the emotions, because I was right with you last night. I was ready to buzz my hair off. Towards the end when you said maybe wait for someone to help you I took that seriously. However at 1:30 AM I grabbed my hubbys clippers and did it. I feel so much better mentally this morning.

So inspiring! I have been considering the take it off cut too! I'm balding and further damaged my hair by trying to add highlights from my natural 4/6 to blond. My hairdresser said my scalp and greys wouldn't be as obvious.... now what's left is fried.... Thank you, thank you, thank you!
