I love your posts. You don't sugar coat everything like some do. If I think that I'll like a colour, I go on RUclips and check out all the reviews for the colour I am thinking of buying, on my chosen wig style. If there is too much variance, it might help to visit a local wig retailer to see the wig, in reality. You don't have to buy from them, if you can buy the wig cheaper elsewhere!
The other thing that I've found is finding a wig and colour that I like, then, it's discontinued. You can't always get a close substitute.
Also, find a reviewer with a similar face shape/head size/colouring to you, if you can.
I've been wearing wigs for 32yrs, now. I'm STILL learning! 😀
Keep the information and advice flowing! ♥️

I TOTALLY agree with you on the codes! I think it is fine if a company wants to name a color "Iced Macchiato With 2 Pumps of Caramel and No Whip", but give a sister a code!

Great video. Definitely a struggle for us just beginning. One helpful thing is if you know a particular color is warm/cool/neutral that would be helpful. Also I know some manufacturers make multiple brands of wigs (that share colors) a list of those would be great too.

Wig color must be The most difficult thing, at least for me, I can't remember all the numbers and what each one means so my resource are photos ( not good since the lighting for the catalog can make a wig look totally different in real life) and videos, videos are a bless, people like you who do tons of different shades, not all wig video people do that because some prefer only blondes, some prefer only brunette and I understand that but when we are trying to decide between two similar shades a good video with outdoor lighting is priceless, your web site is great and very well done, after 8 months of wig waring I just know that I don't need a lace front and I went from JR Ignite in Shaded Peach to Toni Brattin in Light Blonde, I just jumped right but in general I see All your videos first and as many as I can find when choosing a color, even then my Inuendo from Gabor that looked very much a reddish shade end up being a blonde, thanks to you and with furniture markers now I love her, sorry for the long comment but please keep doing what you do, the help is amazing...I think that all brands should do a quick showing of their shades instead of those tiny squares of color, if we are not good with remember the numbers those don't help and like you said, they vary from brand to brand, to me videos are a must and you for sure do a lot to make us more at ease with the buying of a wig and even changing it's shade, thanks for the help, thanks for a great web site, thanks for the videos, I have been learning so much in these 8 months and I will keep going on learning....thanks and stay safe.

Hi, Maria! I agree, this is so difficult and the wig mfg don't make it easier. I am so glad the furniture markers worked for you- actually just did another video on that and am so excited to share it soon! When we buy a wig that is a little lighter or redder than we want they can really make all the difference! I only wish there was a way to lighten a wig that is too dark, lol... I'll have to keep researching on that one. HUGS and you stay safe as well.

As a new wig wearer who just started looking at and buying wigs in May, I have been struggling finding wigs that look good with my cool complexion. It seemed no matter how much research I did, all the wig colors I tried were warm. After months of only vague descriptions and videos to go on and spending a lot of time researching and money returning all the wigs I ordered, I finally just bought grays and fashion colored wigs. I wish wig companies/retailers would group/rank their colors as Warm, Neutral and Cool as the cosmetic industry does because we really need this when we cannot see anything directly. It would solve my biggest problem and I'm sure others are having the same issue. Thanks for all the info and encouragement you gave us in this video.

Such an awesome video Denise. Thank you so very much for all your hard work that you put into these. The chart and links are so helpful. Btw, that color from HM is my favorite from his line. I believe I have it on Ella(?)...so adorable! Skintone plays a major role in finding wig colors that work too. I've bought some that completely washed me out or made me look Gothic (which I had always been a dark brunette with red/blonde highlights) yet when I've put those colors on lately, it's like whoaaa...what's going on? Not working at all. It's trial and error, mostly in the beginning, but God Bless those manufacturers who do number codes! Because once you find the color numbers that you know you can wear, it does make it a little easier across the board. Well, hummm...just a smidge easier. The more you buy, the more similarity (with slight variances) you will see with colors. For example, Toasted Sesame by Envy is closely related to Tuscany Toast by Paula Young and sort of close to Ellen Wille's Lgt Bernstein Rooted. All 3, on the longer wigs I have, are similar. But I wholeheartedly agree with you, Denise, that if someone is just starting out, go with something that closely resembles your own natural hair color. And when you get comfortable, go adventurous...it's so much more fun! 🥰
I do have one question: Have you ever tried Ellen Wille's Tobacco Rooted color? If you have, what do you think of it?

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  3 года назад +1

Hi my friend! I haven't tried Tobacco Rooted but have definitely been curious about that one! I remember you mentioning how close Tuscany Toast and Light Bernstein rooted as so it is on my list to do a comparison.... so many videos so little time, lol.

i watch every one of your videos because i love having you as a friend and gaining insight into the"wearing of wigs". i am new to wigs, wear them because of chemo and dislike every minute of it. i am also old and only wear 60's so there isn't much to decide in the way of color but you are so right about the differences in 60 from brand to brand also texture to texture settings quite different. your wig today is perfect for you. i remember when you wore brown and these lighter reddish and blonds sure match your bouncy twinkly personality. curls are your friend too. thank you for being you and know that you matter. 🤗

Wig colour was the hardest thing for me. I found a decent match but it's definitely not perfect. And that was for synthetics. Now I have to do it all over again for HH. If anyone knows a light brown (mousey brown) with little to no red/auburn in HH, let me know and I'll be super grateful

Such a great video to help demystify the wide range of confusing color names & codes in this industry. So true how the same color combinations can vary greatly, even within the same brand, depending on the style & fiber used. The same color combinations on a heat friendly piece will look different on a non heat friendly piece of the same style and color. Then, add a root( you know, my favorite thing 😁) and depending on the root color & its length, things change again! But, I do believe it's worth all the effort to find your best individual styles, color/colors. By watching as many reviews as you can, for each piece you are interested in, you will find it easier to make a decision. It just takes time & patience.
You know, like you, I have been on this journey for 2 years. Watching you from the very beginning has been such a blessing. I have learned so much from you. You certainly have had a positive impact on my progress.
For me, personally, it doesn't matter where you film your videos, the car, the bathroom, the kitchen, etc.....all of that sort of fades into the background because of how genuine and sincere you are. It's so obvious how much you care about others and your desire to help people everywhere. All they have to do is watch & listen.
It IS like sitting down somewhere with you and chatting & sharing this journey.
Hugs🤗 to you for all you do! You DO make a difference. The world needs more people like you! Always sharing, always caring. Love you, my friend ❤

Still catching up on your back catalog and loving it. I'm feeling much better equipped to tackle wig wearing bc of your videos. My big beef on color...as much money as wig companies make on their products, you'd think they'd be able to afford to show each wig in all it's color iterations on their web sites. It's so frustrating to try and guess, bc we all know color isn't consistent from style to style. Ugh! If I'm going to spend money on an item, I don't want to have to guess.

Wig color is extremely frustrating! Thank you for this video. I have been trying to match my bio color, but no success. The colors I have tried have this weird greenish tone in certain lighting. I think I am giving up on trying to find my bio color which is what has been called "dish-water" blond. It has been recommended by wig sisters that I try going darker...or maybe a strawberry blond tone. I have wanted to give up several times, but I hate my balding bio hair so much. I am going to keep trying. Thank you for all you do for us, Denise. You are a valuable resource for us 💕

Denise, this was perfect! I have referred to your color index and brand list almost weekly since you told me about them in March. They are the most useful resources I have for sorting out this color conundrum. I agree that managing our expectations is one of the most important (and for me, hardest) things to do. I have made lots of mistakes with wigs I've ordered since I began wearing them, but I've kept notes on each one I've returned or donated in hopes of learning from those errors. There is a steep learning curve to this wig life and you, my friend, have been so very helpful in making the journey a little easier. Thanks for all you share with us. 💖 Jill

First off, your styling of the wig you have on is fabulous! I’m also two years into my wig experience and still yet to find my absolute ‘it’ colour. It’s taken me some time to understand the colour coding but I’m getting there-as funds permit!😉. Nowhere near as many makers available here in Australia and shipping to Australia makes purchasing from the US just that bit out of reach. We certainly don’t have coupon/codes and sales here either and generally brand wigs here are in the $250 starting point. Making a correct colour choice is important! Any info we can get to help us terrific! Thanks for the share today-this will be so helpful for so many!😘

I’ve been disappointed so many times by ordering rooted blonde toppers, and receiving reddish and warm rooted pieces. The only ones so far that didn’t disappoint was the belle tress rootbeer float, and Jon Renau Palm Springs, and Venice blonde. Have you come across any ashy cool brown roots. (I don’t mind the dark roots as long as they’re ashy not reddis)in Ellen Wille or Bell Madame

Thank you for making this video, I have subscribed and liked. Now off to download your resources, just trying to remember the numbers is a minefield!!! TY

Totally!! Even after all this experience I still struggle (as you saw in the video when I got the numbers on the wig I was wearing wrong, lol).

You tackled some issues that we all needed to hear. In this very imperfect world that we live in.At times our expectations can be very unrealistic. We expect perfection at all levels. When in reality. It is not even logical to expect pure perfection at any level ,,,even in the wig world.I understand that if you pay 500 dollars for a wig. You expect 500 dollars worth of merchandise. But who is to say what that really is,,,beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder.I can spend 100 dollars for a wig on eBay and be just as happy. It all has to do with our expectations,Basically it all goes back to our hopes & expectations. Why do you expect what you do? ???? I think if we are honest with ourselves it boils down to pride,,, thinking you deserve better. When in reality this just is not so....(pride)We need to humble ourselves and get back to the right path..... then when we do we will be able to have clear vision and the right expectations.

Thank you for this, Vikki..... I agree so much with what you said. I know that when I get in the most trouble with myself or my emotions is when my own expectations for misaligned.

You can adjust the color on your monitor...

That's true, but it is hard to know if what you adjusted to is true or not, at least I wouldn't know, lol.

@@heywigsister Well, Denise what I mean is that you can put something you have right beside your own monitor and adjust the color to match the real item...

Today I'll send another wig back and pay more fees. I'm at the point where I'm thinking I'm better off to just go with my own hair. I have seven wigs. The only ones I'm wearing are two from Toni Brattin in red-blonde or ROP Audrey in Copper Glaze, which is darker than I wanted. The others are in boxes until who knows when because they're to light, to dark, or I just don't care for them. Now I want Turn or Jules but again, will I order the right color? Idk. I'm just wasting money : (

Oh, Sharon.... I can just hear the frustration through your words.... I get it. In the beginning I really thought I would never get it right. Have you watched any videos by Stacy- her channel is Wear Wigs with Me? She reviews a lot of red/coppery colors... wondering if any of those colors would be good for you? What colors do you have so far? Maybe I can help you talk through it? Feel free to email me: heywigsister@gmail.com . HUGS- you are not going through this alone!

Very helpful! I am getting used to different colors where initially I didn't think lighter colors looked good on me. Do you know if it okay to use Fanciful washout temporary color on synthetic wigs?

Gosh, I'm not sure! I'll have to research that.

Hi Denise, thank you for a wonderful video. I love that you donate wigs also. I belong to a group on fb that is specifically designed for those new to wig wearing but cannot afford to buy them. People like you donate to this group and our wonderful leader refurbishes them and then posts them out to her members. There is no sales allowed and the postage is encouraged but if you can’t afford it then it is covered by Wendy. If you would like to be part of this group and help with donations please do contact me via here.
I also wanted to ask you if you would allow this particular video to be shared with the group, as most of the members are new to wigs and are blindsided by them and what has happened in their lives to create a need for wigs. You give so many helpful tips in here I know would be very helpful to our members. Would you allow it to be pinned to the menu of our group so it can be found easily? Please contact me if any of this interests you. Cheers Jeletza Creagh.

Hi!! I belong to the same group! Wendy is a good friend of mine and I've donated a few wigs there.... yes, please do share... I haven't been very active on there in a bit because life is so busy but hopefully things will slow down some soon. I just LOVE that group, though!

Denise Sheets lol, the wig world is a small one, even in America. I live in Australia and wigs are still very much under appreciated here. Our population is around 26M so we don’t have a remotely similar number of people, and there may only be one fb wig group (that I know of). So there aren’t many wigs going around, and I came across the American wig groups with glee! Then somehow stumbled across Wendy, I think it was on another group and she was modelling a VERY curly wig with a headband. I remember laughing out loud, she was so darn CUTE. I was briefly a moderator for the group, but it’s expanding so quickly, and my computer skills are not good enough, so had to drop out ... but I still work behind the scenes for her, steering people her way. She is an AMAZING person, I love her to bits, and everyone in the group feels the same. Thank you so much for your donations, they are hugely appreciated. A decent wig can work wonders for very bruised self esteem, we see this quite often.
Wendy is truly an Angel. Here in Aus we have an award for people doing wonderful things to help others. It’s a proper medal with lots of kudos. Do you have something like that in America? Maybe for each state? I’ve often thought she should be honoured in some way, she is so selfless.
Thank you again for your wonderful videos, and for being such a kind hearted person, and for donating to her group, it’s hugely appreciated.
