    The "tail gunner" is the very tail-end of the plane, where modern airliners have that little auxiliary turbine for power.
    Below the plane is the "ball turret", which actually was the riskiest job aboard because they often suffered hydraulic failures through gunfire-damage and landed gear-up which could kill the gunner in the hard-to-get-out-of ball turret.
    "Risked his life 2 times that day" means the two times the two aircraft passed German AA-guns, with the German plane sticking so close to the bomber that it'd either be mistaken for a captured aircraft or just be too close to the friendly plane to shoot down.
    Stigler actually tried to gesture to the crew to land in Germany and be captured or head for sweden, both preferable to the upcoming crash into the north sea he expected.
    3 things to add:
    -In real life, the near-crash happened above residential housing, not a forest. It's said that the plane went so low it blew shingles off a roof.
    -Allegedly, this was the first mission the B17's crew flew in that configuration.
    -While some of the crew suffered severe injuries only the tail gunner died.
    Also, it's always nice to see foreign content that doesn't depict WW2 Germans as one dimensional evil people. the incident is widely unknown in Germany because it "straddles the line" with talking positively about Germany in WW2 which is often "put in the same folder" as glorifying/trivializing naziism.

      Things to add: Sweden was neutral and they wouldve got there medical treatment and would be interned for rest of the war. Stigler preferred this solution.
      The song is not that right with risked his life 2 times and they did add in the description the a third chance what would have happened.
      Its actually 3 times: 1. The gunners of ye olde pub could have shot stigler down 2. Friendly Anti Air could have shot both down 3. if someone had reported him, he would have been court-martialed and executed

    6:45 the germans had an anti-arcraft line that was part of the "atlantic wall", and as the ye old pub was alone it would have been easy pickings for the ground AA. Franz flew his plane close enough to the B-17 so the AA teams wouldn't fire or else they might risk hitting a friendly aircraft, this was a close call on 2 separate occasions during his escort of the damaged bomber

    • @saintcynicism2654
      @saintcynicism2654 2 года назад +22

      That's why it's sometimes said he risked his life three times in one day. Prior to escorting the bomber home, he'd already participated in an attack, his plane was on the ground refueling and rearming from that engagement. He also took off with a .50 cal bullet stuck in the radiator from that first fight, since there hadn't been enough time to repair it yet.

    Franz' training officer had once told the men he was training that if he ever heard of them shooting any enemy in a parachute, that he would then shoot them himself. Franz saw the B17 as that crews parachute, so he didnt open fire on them, and tried to get them to land in Sweden, to which they refused, so he escorted them out of German air space to over the English channel so they wouldnt be shot down by German Anti air. He never spoke of the event, since as this was Nazi Germany, he would have been tried for treason and summarily executed, incidentally, not shooting them down also lost him his chance at the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross, a highly prestigious award.

    Franz was told by his commanding officer if he saw or heard of any of his men shooting man in a chut he would personally shoot them down him self. Franz approach the bomber from it 6 o'clock noticed something was wrong he was wasn't being fired at. Noticing the bomber was no threat to him he remembers what his commander said and to him the bomber was the crew cut. Had any found out what Franz did he would have been shot.

  • @LordMekanicus
    @LordMekanicus 2 года назад +6

    "Eckie" was the tailgunner. Franz pulled in behind, and waited for Eckie to open up, but when he didn't, he swung right to get a better look. Red icicles were streaming down the gun barrels in the tail, and he saw two men tending in injured man through the hole in the waist. "I can't do it. You're out of the fight" is basically what Franz thought. Give the Adam Makos book "A Higher Call" a read, it gives the entire history leading up to this event. Also, a Canadian new channel did a special on these two men years ago. Give it a watch too. I think they called it the Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown incident.

    A tail gunner on a tail with very wide range of fireing (both horizontally and vertically)
    A nose gunner (which you have spoken about at the beginning)
    A ball turret below the fuselage (the name comes from it's shape) and is probably the most dangerous place to be.
    Two waist gunners (on both sides) covering the bomber on 3 and 9 o'clock

    The tail gunner is the guy in the back. He was killed by a 20mm cannon round. Apparently it hit him right in the head, resulting in the head exploding. He probably didn't even see it coming. The pilot (Charlie) was hit in the shoulder btw. They didn't mention that. That means he managed to recover a plane that is nose diving towards that ground with a gunshot wound in his shoulder. Doing that without the wound would've been impressive, but this is even more crazy.

    Regarding your question about rules of war, you may want to look up the Law of Armed Conflict. I'm a US Air Force NCO and we learn about the subject numerous times over the course of a career. The LOAC is the part of international and US law that governs what you can and can't legally do in war. A violation of these laws is considered a war crime and would result in prosecution under international law and/or the Uniform Code of Military Justice. These laws are probably a lot better codified and understood today then they would have been during WWII, especially since post-Nuremberg, we are reminded specifically that "I was just following orders" usually does not excuse or justify unlawful actions.
    On a related note, despite the popular notion that military personnel are "good at following orders" (I guess people think we do whatever we're told without thinking, which is untrue), we are expected and even required not to obey any unlawful order. This is taught as early as basic training.
    Because you mentioned Auschwitz, you may be interested in the Sabaton song Inmate 4859. It is a very unusual story.

    Intersting point also is that Franz was missing one kill to receive Iron Cross (or similar medal) he was a fighter ACE at that time already.

    Mrs Theren Stiegler brukar titta på olika redaktörer vids och lämna en uppskattande kommentar. Jag pratade lite med henne före jul, dvs den 20e dec på årsdagen av denna händelse. En underbar kvinna som är så tacksam över att historien sprids. Anledningen till att Stieglers familj faktiskt kände igen vad sången handlade om är att det tidigare kommit ut en bok om det som heter "The higher call".

    The code of the air is pretty much the same to day, the implementation is a bit different.
    If someone bails out they are of limit, but today you can still attack fighter aircraft going for emergency landing due to rocket chairs being a thing. For bombers i don´t know.
    For paratroopers on the other hand, its actually allowed to shoot them in the air. So pilot bailing out are protected, but not paratroopers.

    The German pilot took a ridk of being shot down on approach to the bomber . And then took a risk that he would be executed if he was spotted by anyone who identified his aircraft escorting the enemy bomber out of the area.
    So he risked his life twice . And yes it happened in WW2.
