    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ray's (Kevin Costner) dream comes true when he gets to have a game of catch with his father (Dwier Brown).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
"If you build it, he will come." That's the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. At first, "he" seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who materializes on the ballfield and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is "Ease his pain." He realizes that his ballfield has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives. One of these folks is Salingeresque writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), whom Ray kidnaps and takes to a ball game and then to his farm. Another is Doc Graham (Burt Lancaster), a beloved general practitioner who gave up a burgeoning baseball career in favor of medicine. The final "second-chancer" turns out to be much closer to Ray. That "magical" field in Dyersville, Iowa still draws thousands of baseball-happy tourists each year.

This scene makes grown men cry because we see a man reconcile with his father and show him that he loves him after years of distance and anger. In real life it's not always that easy, and many men are painfully aware when watching this clip that they'll never have a reconciliation with their own fathers the way these two men do in this movie. But Hollywood lets us dream, and so we cry because we wish this story for ourselves and are touched by its beauty.

My father passed away several months ago. One of my memories this scene triggers is my dad coming home from the factory on a hot summer night all tired and sweaty. Yet when he saw me waiting for him with two mitts and a ball he would drop his lunch bucket and somehow find the energy to play catch with me for as long as I wanted. Rest in peace, dad.

Took a girl I really liked to see this film - first date.
Blubbered uncontrollably (along with pretty much every guy in the theater) during this scene. She was not impressed - guess I was too 'wimpy' for her. That was the end of that potential relationship.
After that, knowing I would choke up, I rented the DVD, and watched it with a new girlfriend.
    She cried too.
    Married her!

I know that for Americans, baseball means a lot. I'm a Brit with no interest in the game, but this film makes me weep uncontrollably. I see the baseball as a symbol of what brings fathers and sons together, and how important it is that parents spend time with their children, time being the most precious thing a parent and child can give each other, after love.

    • @JacksonWithrow82

I've actually wondered how somebody without baseball as a fixture in their culture would react to a baseball film (there are a lot) and this one specifically. Being a Canadian myself, baseball is not quite as strong culturally here but it's very present. I'm glad to see what makes the movie and baseball special isn't lost to those with little to no exposure to the game

It took a few viewings, but I finally got the emphasis on their last handshake. It's a really long one that encompasses a thousand unsaid apologies between the two of them. Like a "Please....don't let go." We men just have a hard time with our words at times. Say what you have to say to those who matter before it's too late. Not all of us live in Iowa.

    • @TheWvcoal
      @TheWvcoal 9 лет назад +6

And that's the game..... as I said in a different response, my dad and I didn't have a great relationship when I was growing up. We finally "found" a friend in each other late in my father's life after I had children of my own. That handshake was like our finding each other -- no words of apology were really needed. They were said X10 by our relationship from that point on.

I lost my dad last month. This was one of my dads favorite movies. He cried everytime he say this scene because he told me his dad never played catch with I’m, but it was because his dad never learned how to play baseball and didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of his own son. I look at this scene now, and I remember playing catch with my dad when I played baseball as a kid. I’d give anything to see him, talk to him, or even play catch with him one more time.

My Dad is 89 years old. Yesterday, we watched Field of Dreams together. When the movie was over, we looked at each other and we both had tears in our eyes. Field of Dreams is my favorite movie of all times. I have seen it almost 100 times and each time, my eyes well up.
Another good father-son film is October Sky. The ending is also a sentimental scene with a father-son connection. I highly recommend it. It also is my top 10 movies.

In my opinion this is one of the greatest movie's ever made. Yes it's about baseball, father's and sons and dreams but it's primarily about second chances. All of us can relate to that and for most of us who are getting older and have lost our dads this scene still resonates 25 years later. I lost my dad when I was a teenager. Miss him every single day of my life. I can still hear him sharing his words of wisdom with me. I wish he could see his grand daughter and I wish we could have one more catch.

This scene is my favorite and also the hardest for me to watch. My older brother absolutely loved baseball. I also have a younger brother and the three of us used to play all the time as kids. Unfortunately my older brother was in a car wreck in his freshman year in college and died not too long after. Its been 14 years and I miss him more than I can ever say. This scene always gets me because I would give anything to play one more game of catch with my brother. My family and I are Christians and I'm looking forward to playing baseball with my brother in Heaven. Love ya bro.

The fact that when Ray says: "Hey dad." and John turns around means John knew all along Ray was his son and didn't know what to say.
For my part I lost my dad in June of last year and this scene never fails to leave me a teary eyed emotional wreck. Baseball was my sport when i was growing up, little leagues into Junior Varsity during high school. My father suffered from health problems toward the latter end of my baseball days, but when i was little he would always ask to have a catch with me to practice. Sometimes back then i would say no, there were more important things i told myself, i was too busy, nowadays, with ny father gone, i would gladly mow down my own crops, build a baseball field, meraphorically speaking, and have a catch with my dad.
Also, deep connection here, before the game of catch John says he could have sworn Iowa was heaven, and describes heaven as the place dreams come true. He found heaven in Iowa because his dream was playing baseball with his son.

He passed away in 1997 when I was 18 and I've said many times that I wish I could throw the ball with him one last time. So it goes without saying that I have yet to hold it together when watching this scene. I now have three sons of my own and I think about this scene and my own father every time we throw a baseball.

I remember that weird moment in my teens when I figured out that my dad had also really been my age, and I'd be his age someday. That fundamental realization that your father is just a man trying to figure out what is the right thing to do in life and tries to do his best following the path and playing the game by the rules. That moment when your dad ceases to be the superman who knows everything and becomes just a man. I had never respected the old man like that before.

I grew up playing baseball. I tried to get my son interested in it when he was a little kid, but he was more drawn to ice hockey. After watching him play a couple of seasons in youth hockey, I realized that my eight year old boy wasn't ever going to play catch with me. So, I decided to lace up some skates and learn to play hockey. He's almost 18 now and is playing his last year on the varsity team. Sometimes, he plays on my team in my adult league. I don't know who cherishes those moments on the ice more.

This scene touches me in many ways. My Father taught me the game of baseball starting at the age 7. He was my Little League coach and supported me after Little League on into high school. Many times along the way, we played catch when I knew deep down he was very tired from work. I never forgot that. His devotion to me and the game of baseball was second to none. The beauty of that scene is it manages to hit all of those emotional buttons that I felt as a youngster playing catch with my Dad. My Dad passed twenty years ago and I hope he's waiting for me in heaven with a ball and glove for one more game of catch.

He almost sounds like a little boy again, asking his Dad that question... and just the look on his Dads face and the tone of his fathers "Oh yeah." makes it seem like he's been there, and it was pure bliss.
