Just finished watching for maybe the 10th time throughout my life.. as many have said before me, the line, “Hey dad. Wanna have a catch,” is quite possibly one of the most moving lines of any film. Instantaneously I’m ten again. Waiting for my dad to come home from a long shift. Without hesitation, exhausted and covered in sweat and grease, he always grabbed his glove to have a catch with his boy. Irony is, I’ve never told him as a man how much that meant. I hope I find the courage before it’s too late. Thank you for creating a masterpiece.

@JPost55465 - Please do! Those are great experiences, playing catch with one's father. Especially when he comes in from a long day at work, tired, and still bonds with his son. Do tell your father how much it meant to you. It will be good for the both of you. God bless you with the courage to do so.

When Conan said "two" I instantly thought of "Field of Dreams" and "For Love of the Game".....lol
The reason that last five minutes is so effective is that it's universal. Could be baseball, could be football, could be any number of things, but the chance to spend just 5 more minutes with your old man.....
Beautiful film. Costner thinks it's his generation's "It's a Wonderful Life", he's not wrong.

I'm 67. I remember watching Field of Dreams in a theater in Iowa, where I live. When it was over I burst into tears. I sobbed like never before. 20 minutes. Everyone had left the theater. Why? The tension between Intuitions of what could be, inner knowing from the Spiritual Realm, and one man's realization of his Possibility. That made my 'dreams' possible, as well. I wasn't insane or fatally flawed. I was being guided by a science humans could not yet understand. All of that streamed down my face. Later, I visited that baseball field in Dyersville, Iowa. They get about ten thousand people a year that visit there from all over the world!

"Having a catch with dad" is one of the easiest heartstrings to tug on, especially the older you get - Your dad is more likely to have passed on, you're more likely to have a kid of your own, etc. It's like it was engineered to make American men weepy.

    • @koreanpathfinder

I'm Chilean, so I never played baseball in my entire life, since it's not a popular sport in my country. And still, this movie makes me cry every time, mostly because I lost my dad just 3 years before, and I would give anything to get to play with him just one more time.

The more I watch this film as my life progresses, and now my Dad has dementia and Alzheimer's, the more this film breaks me, or resounds with me. I'm not American, its not even baseball, its the whole father-son dynamic that hits. One of the most beautiful films ever made.

I just rewatched it with some friends, the longer, director's cut, and I remember really enjoying it, but as an adult it feels like a Disney ride come to life. I remember more post-apocalyptic theming and exploration, but it's really just a bunch of cartoon characters launching their jet skis off jumps with a sex trafficking subplot.

For me it's about a males inherent need to connect and be accepted by his Father. In the movie his Father had died and he had to live with the fact that the opportunity was lost. When he came back however it was like a second chance. Men get emotional because of the lack of connection with their Fathers and the burning question a son has..." am I enough Dad, do I measure up?"
We all need that acceptance and validation from our Dads. Fatherhood is so important!

This is all true. But what really chokes me up during that last scene, is that throughout this whole ordeal he thought he was on a journey to help heal someone else’s pain, until it is revealed to him and he discovers that it was his own pain that needed to be healed. THAT is extremely deep! And that is what makes me choke up and cry - he thought he was doing this all for the good of someone else, but it was really all for him! It’s just very poetic and beautiful

It’s true that movie always makes me cry at the end! I love baseball and it’s the one thing my father and I shared and had in common! We loved the game. I even played the same position of catcher just because my dad played it. So when I saw or whenever I see that ending it just gets me, especially now that my father is gone! You can call me sissy or whatever you want but that movie just gets to me because it always reminds me of my father! I miss him and I miss playing baseball too lol. Catcher is not good on the knees so I guess I am officially retired LOL, But I would do it again!

And even though the 4-hour cut wasn't sanctioned by Costner (I just found that out), despite a few strange edits and some goober acting bits, I love it even more than the theatrical cut.

It touches you because many times in life your Dad passes on before you fully mature, before you truly understand the man. Maybe before you have that last living conversation to try to say things or make things right. And as you grow older and see things in a different light you long to just have an hour or so talk to him. Say the things you should have, ask the questions. But you can't.
It's a sadness and regret that never goes away. There's always that part of you that longs for that..maybe even call it redemption.

Like he said, whenever he goes to a ballgame he gets these extra perks that most people will never experience. I remember watching this movie as a child and thinking that it was great because it involved a sport that my Dad and I have always enjoyed. I'm 43 years old now and have a much deeper understanding, love, and appreciation for it given that I experienced some very rocky times with both of my parents through the years and it got to where we didn't get along and I had choice but to leave home and make my own way in the world as well as live my life and love them from a distance given the differences and issues that exist between us and the need for boundaries. My Dad grew up loving the game and had lots of talent and I fully believe that he could've made it as far as the majors if he would've had the resources as well as the familial support and acceptance that he had needed and wanted so much from my grandparents and other influential people in his circle but he didn't have any of that and had no choice but to move on, start a career, and make a living as well as the very best of his life from there. Given my much deeper understanding of everything in this movie and the characters as well as experiences in my own life as well as what my Dad has told me about his own along with being mindful of his deep and lifelong love for Baseball, I always think of him every time I watch this movie and many parts of it I can't watch without crying because it reminds me so much of my parents and I and how I've always looked up to and loved them and always will no matter what and how I wish that things had happened very differently for all of us. Still, I'm very grateful for them and that they're here to this day and love them more than they'll ever know.

I loved baseball as a kid. My Dad was never a fan. We never "had a catch". He's passed on now. My son never liked baseball. He's 31 now, and we'll never "have a catch", either. So "Wanna have a catch?" gets me every time. Something I'll never do with my Dad, or my son.

That Aspen land cannot be understated.....it's literally in a paradise spot away from the town. He has a ploy of land in a valley that Colorado itself would not allow anymore a private citizen to purchase, he luckily got it during the 90s. The people around the municipality would love to have it as a public land and I'm pretty sure he can't even sell it at this point... Or if he sells it... can only be back to the state of Colorado.

Interesting. I'm curious which valley it's in (I'm too lazy to dig around for it). The Telluride/Sangre de Cristo area is supposed to be even more beautiful but it's kind of out of the way from everywhere. Aspen feels secluded but is also well populated. Downtown is kind of weird, though.
