Unlike Baahubali and RRR, Ponniyin selvan's selling point is not VFX, its the story , the plot , the multi layered characters, every character is important. There are no villains in this story, everybody is right in their perspective. Let me just explain a scene in Ponniyin Selvan that also occurred in Baahubali 1. The protoganist Vandhiyathevan has to enter the Tanjore fort. He is carrying a secret message from the crown price Adtiya Karikalan to Kundavai (Aditya's sister), but the fort is under the control of Pazhuvettaiyar(hand of the king), so the message will get caught in their hands. When he is contemplating how to enter the fort, Nandini's (Pachhuvettaiyar's wife) palanquin arrives, and Vandhiyathevan dashes the men carrying the palanquin with his horse. And screams that people carrying Nandini’s palanquin have hit his horse. Palanquin is placed down and Nandini comes out to confront him, he then lies to her that he is carrying a message from her brother Azhwarkadiyaan, and as a proof he tells her a story only she and Azhwarkadiyaan know (Azhwarkadiyaan was lamenting about this story to Vandhiyathevan in a completely different context). So Nandini asks him to meet her in her chambers and gives him the royal ring of Pazhuvettaiyar as a pass to enter the fort. He waits till the palanquin enters the fort and then produces the royal ring to the fort guards and says HE IS SENT BY PAZHUVETTAIYAR!! (If he had said Nandini sent him, he would have been produced in her chambers). Since Pazhuvettaiyar is not there in the fort, he is asked to wait in the guest chambers, from where he escapes to meet Kundavai. The same scene occurs in Baahubali 1, where Shivudu has to enter the fort to rescue his mother. What does he do ? He jumps into a moat, climbs up the fort walls like Spider Man, and jumps from the 100-foot fort wall like Superman. While Vandhiyathevan plots a multi-level scheme to enter the fort.
Don't compare with bahubali like grandeur and mega action scenes ........This film story has so many layers and strong story driven film and this kind of films don't need ultra grand and mega mega action scenes

I read this book for 5 times and I remember each and every scene of this book. Initially i was afraid and upset that how they gonna make this book as a movie and i was literally praying that the movie should not spoil the book. But I must say, being a hard core fan of the Ponniyin Selvan book, this trailer made me speechless. Amazing making, AR music gave me a goosebump. I had my own imagination of the characters in the book, just by knowing the names of the actors who is going to play the respective character, i was not happy but seeing them in that get up, I'm satisfied. Especially Karthi as Vandhiyadevan, he is the apt for this role. Except one charcter, for Vanathi, they could have choosen some other actress who is supposed to have an innocent look on her face. Other than that, everything looks so perfect. So proud to be a Tamilian coz, i get a chance to read the ponniyin selvan book in its original language Tamil.

Bahubali was a fictional story with larger than life characters.. But Ponniyin Selvan is a novel based on real people from a real dynasty called Cholas. Of course there will be some elements to enhance the story telling.
Ponniyan Selvan is also a completely fictional story . It’s just based on real characters and their timelines with the entire interactions plotting being completely fictional. The difference is that , PS is based on an epic novel series while bahubali is merely just a movie story , obviously PS story would be far more deeper and better . But unfortunately the movie doesn’t do justice to the epic novels .

The thing is, when it's completely fiction, you can show your characters stronger enough to do commercial movie things.. Kind of superhuman like powers to keep audience engaged with mind-blowing stunt set pieces.. When it comes to Novel based movies like PS which is historic fiction movie you can't overpower the characters to fit into cinema, you have to keep it rooted matching the source material.The challenges are there but still it will work, PS is about conflicts between characters rather than a war.. So, talkie portion will be more, but with razor sharp and on point dialogues you can keep the audience engaged.

But for foreigners such as yourselves who are unaware of most of the social aspects and beliefs of Tamil culture and people, it is really best for you to read the book before the movie, which would really help you. Tamil here (staying within Kerala 😂generations) - *never read the book and feeling tragic by it.* I grew up in Maharashtra and hence don't have a grip on reading or writing Tamizh despite me being able to speak it quite fluently (Malayalam too). Hence was unable to read it. Am already a post graduate and stay abroad. However guess it's best time to learn Tamizh and read the book.

If there’s one thing (amongst many others) to know about Cholas, it’s that they were the sea conquerors. Their navy controlled entire Indian Ocean and entire south east Asia. Their control and impact extended from Tamil Nadu to West Bengal to Thailand to Indonesia (they even kidnapped the Sri Vijaya king of Indonesia) to Japan to Cambodia. Also- one of the longest ruling dynasties on the planet. They ruled for more than 1500 years. And it was the golden age. Art and culture flourished. I hope people go to watch this film not for the sake of criticising the VFX or whatever, but they go to see the film for the STORY- ponniyin selvan.
Yup... based on historic finding stories and in this novel, one of the 3 Assassins' who killed.... would later be confronted by the Sri Vijaya Empire in Java (Indonesia today). The person sailed away from India then to Java and were chased away to Melaka. He became the founding father of Malaya (Malaysia). >> That person created the first Malay Sultanate in ancient Malaya. His name was Parameswara. >> As per Malaysian History he was the founder of Melaka and of Malaysia.
This is historical drama treated like braveheart , Mughal e azam , lotr and not a commercial war film like 300 , baahubali ...it's highly character and story driven and covers a lott of layers and conflicts in its 2 part saga... I love both kinda films...ssr did it with baahubali... Hoping now that masters don't disappoint 🤞
Strongly recommend reading the book. Looks like Maniratnam has stayed true to the book. I'm only worried that movie could be a little overwhelming as they're squeezing a five volume book series into a two part movie.

Kalki mixed up real historical people and incidents with some imaginary people and incidents to create this story. Infact all the places referred in the novel and 99% of the characters are real. some incidents have been fictionalized for the sake of entertainment. Kalki used two real historical accounts as his references. If you are interested in actual history about cholas you can refer these two books: The Cholas by Nilakanta Sastri and Pirkala Chozhar Sarithiram by TV Sadhasiva Pandarathar. The former is available in english in Indian Culture website but I'm not quite sure about the latter. Both are extensive read about the Chola lineage.

You can read book any time you want. Because you will love it. Nobody will say Ponniyin Selvan novel is bad or average. It's one of the greatest. But we can't say about that to movie. So I would say try first book or even half of the first book to know what to expect. It will give you more hype.

Every shot reminded me of Kalki's vision. The details that Kalki explained in the book are extraordinary. That's why this story could be easily made into a movie.
Historical context: This story happens in the 10th century when the other 2 south Indian dynasties - the Pandiyas and Cheras - have been subjugated by the Cholas. Karikala Cholan (elder brother of raja raja chola - role played by Vikram) is on a mission to conquer central India, while raja raja cholan (played by jeyam ravi) has conquered most of Sri Lanka. The story revolves around vanthiya thevan (best friend of karikala cholan - played by karthi). The story happens in south India and Sri Lanka. Its an extremely interesting political drama that unfolds at this time. The peak of chola dynasty comes 75 years later, when they build the biggest navy of the world at contemporary times, and sails across the indian ocean to conquer south east asian countries, indonesia, malasiya, singapore, cambodia. There are historical novels like kadal pura that revolve around this period. Hope PS becomes a hit, so the producers will be motivated to make more such historical movies.
Amazing....you just mentioned things that I had in my mind... this should motivate others to make films on other historical novels like Kadal pura, Yavana Rani, Raja thilagam, Mannan magal, even Malai Vazhal .....these novels have extraordinary plots. Kalki's another masterpiece Sivagamiyin Sabatham, Parthiban Kanavu.
It is a classic novel By Kalki. Young Tamilians please read it. It consists of 5 volumes. No movie can bring out the plot twists , characterisation and magnificent story telling of the author. And the drawings of the characters by Maniyan in the original text are awesome. The characters play in your mind through those pictures. And I really pity the people who have to see it in Hindi. It will be like watching Gone with the wind in Tamil. One will never be able to pronounce Chozha...least of all connecting oneself with the Tamil culture.
For starters chola Dynasty was in timespan on 300BCE to 1200CE..roughly 1500years in Tamil language belt in India.. currently the state of Tamil Nadu (part of south india) Damn exited about it 🔥

Guys, i watched Game of Thrones without reading the books and i loved it. Likewise i believe that Maniratnam and his writers would have made a film that was understood by everyone regardless of whether or not they’ve read Ponniyin Selvan. I’m just gonna start myself lol! Don’t think I’ll finish 5 volumes before Sep 30, but gonna go watch the movie and soak it in. So when i eventually read the book…. I’d be like oooh… so this was that in the movie. Bhagubali is the story from the angle of kingdom.. this story is from the angle of three people not related with kingdom in any way.. a messenger (Karthi), a spy (Jayaram) and a girl raiding boat (Ishwarya Menon).. from their prospective the story is moving on till the end.

Actually this is a novel. Set of 5 books and each of them has 2500 pages. It is written by Kalki. It's not a easy job to take PS flim. Hats off Mani Rattanam
Honestly, the hype is making me nervous.. Am not placing a benchmark as LOTR.. that is huge expectation.. since LOTR is obviously the pinnacle.. I don't think any film from anywhere around the world could actually overcome that! Since there are definitely budget, VFX & other restrictions for Kollywood.. am pretty confident that the story aspect would be on par with LOTR.
PS-1 story, unlike bahubali had to be confined to original novel-story and is more story/characterization intensive, thrilling (if you know original story), hence mani ratnam invested in star-cast more for acting skills. It wont have over-the-top action stunts like bahubali..but historic fights "as it happened" in chola-empire.... without exaggeration..

Try guessing the imaginary characters... It's a story woven around some great real life people and real incidents... Kalki has presented it so great that it teleports us to the chola era in 950 ACE. Proud to have such great kings in our land.

I read this book for 5 times and I remember each and every scene of this book. Initially i was afraid and upset that how they gonna make this book as a movie and i was literally praying that the movie should not spoil the book. But I must say, being a hard core fan of the Ponniyin Selvan book, this trailer made me speechless. Amazing making, AR music gave me a goosebump. I had my own imagination of the characters in the book, just by knowing the names of the actors who is going to play the respective character, i was not happy but seeing them in that get up, I'm satisfied. Especially Karthi as Vandhiyadevan, he is the apt for this role. Except one charcter, for Vanathi, they could have choosen some other actress who is supposed to have an innocent look on her face. Other than that, everything looks so perfect. So proud to be a Tamilian coz, i get a chance to read the ponniyin selvan book in its original language Tamil.

Bahubali was a fictional story with larger than life characters.. But Ponniyin Selvan is a novel based on real people from a real dynasty called Cholas. Of course there will be some elements to enhance the story telling.
Ponniyan Selvan is also a completely fictional story . It’s just based on real characters and their timelines with the entire interactions plotting being completely fictional. The difference is that , PS is based on an epic novel series while bahubali is merely just a movie story , obviously PS story would be far more deeper and better . But unfortunately the movie doesn’t do justice to the epic novels .

When it comes to Novel based movies like PS which is historic fiction movie you can't overpower the characters to fit into cinema, you have to keep it rooted matching the source material.The challenges are there but still it will work, PS is about conflicts between characters rather than a war.. So, talkie portion will be more, but with razor sharp and on point dialogues you can keep the audience engaged.

Tamil here (staying within Kerala 😂generations) - *never read the book and feeling tragic by it.* I grew up in Maharashtra and hence don't have a grip on reading or writing Tamizh despite me being able to speak it quite fluently (Malayalam too). Hence was unable to read it. Am already a post graduate and stay abroad. However guess it's best time to learn Tamizh and read the book.

Kalki mixed up real historical people and incidents with some imaginary people and incidents to create this story. Infact all the places referred in the novel and 99% of the characters are real. some incidents have been fictionalized for the sake of entertainment. Kalki used two real historical accounts as his references. If you are interested in actual history about cholas you can refer these two books: The Cholas by Nilakanta Sastri and Pirkala Chozhar Sarithiram by TV Sadhasiva Pandarathar. The former is available in english in Indian Culture website but I'm not quite sure about the latter. Both are extensive read about the Chola lineage.

You can read book any time you want. Because you will love it. Nobody will say Ponniyin Selvan novel is bad or average. It's one of the greatest. But we can't say about that to movie. So I would say try first book or even half of the first book to know what to expect. It will give you more hype.

Historical context: This story happens in the 10th century when the other 2 south Indian dynasties - the Pandiyas and Cheras - have been subjugated by the Cholas. Karikala Cholan (elder brother of raja raja chola - role played by Vikram) is on a mission to conquer central India, while raja raja cholan (played by jeyam ravi) has conquered most of Sri Lanka. The story revolves around vanthiya thevan (best friend of karikala cholan - played by karthi). The story happens in south India and Sri Lanka. Its an extremely interesting political drama that unfolds at this time. The peak of chola dynasty comes 75 years later, when they build the biggest navy of the world at contemporary times, and sails across the indian ocean to conquer south east asian countries, indonesia, malasiya, singapore, cambodia. There are historical novels like kadal pura that revolve around this period. Hope PS becomes a hit, so the producers will be motivated to make more such historical movies.

It is a classic novel By Kalki. Young Tamilians please read it. It consists of 5 volumes. No movie can bring out the plot twists , characterisation and magnificent story telling of the author. And the drawings of the characters by Maniyan in the original text are awesome. The characters play in your mind through those pictures. And I really pity the people who have to see it in Hindi. It will be like watching Gone with the wind in Tamil. One will never be able to pronounce Chozha...least of all connecting oneself with the Tamil culture.

Honestly, the hype is making me nervous.. Am not placing a benchmark as LOTR.. that is huge expectation.. since LOTR is obviously the pinnacle.. I don't think any film from anywhere around the world could actually overcome that! Since there are definitely budget, VFX & other restrictions for Kollywood.. am pretty confident that the story aspect would be on par with LOTR.

I read the malayalm translation of this novel. It's an amazing epic + bit of fantasy
PS-1 story, unlike bahubali had to be confined to original novel-story and is more story/characterization intensive, thrilling (if you know original story), hence mani ratnam invested in star-cast more for acting skills. It wont have over-the-top action stunts like bahubali..but historic fights "as it happened" in chola-empire.... without exaggeration..

What is so unfortunate is telugu are jealous and says it’s like bahubali. Why can’t they encourage good products from South Indian cinema? We all loved bahubali, it’s time to produce better movies.
