No not for a decade, Initially MGR bought the rights but could not get it made, than Kamal and Rajni wanted to, but fought over who is going to do the role. So yeah finally, the great Cholas. But sundara chola , nasser. he was called sundara chola for his looks :)
the series is originally 5 books long while the movies will only be 2 parts - bringing the 5 novels together (I'm personally apprehensive about it, having read the books but I'm holding my judgment til I see the film). As for whether part 2 will get greenlit or not, they actually filmed both parts 1 & 2 consecutively - meaning it's all been shot already and currently undergoing post-production in order to be released next year (similar to how Baahubali 1 and 2 were shot back to back).
@@saurabh9446 personally, i think that ponniyin selvan is a story that deserves to be told through a series - so that all the individual plots and characters can shine. HOWEVER, that would be virtually impossible right now because it would require such a high budget. While realistically if it were to be made into a series, it would probably be made using a low budget production - which would be worse than getting a high-budget two part film series in my opinion. You never know though, maybe someday in the future it'll get re-adapted for a series with a large production budget.

Their control and impact extended from Tamil Nadu to West Bengal to Thailand to Indonesia (they even kidnapped the Sri Vijaya king of Indonesia) to Japan to Cambodia. Also- one of the longest ruling dynasties on the planet. They ruled for more than 1500 years. And it was the golden age. Art and culture flourished. I hope people go to watch this film not for the sake of criticising the VFX or whatever (like many people who, even if the film is fantastic HAVE to comment about laws of physics etc), but they go to see the film for the STORY- ponniyin selvan.
Actually the Cholas ruled from 300 bce to around 100 ce. Then again from around 870 ce to 1300 CE. The medieval Cholas under Rajaraja and Rajendra Cholan was the glorious period of Tamil history. Their achievements are too long to be listed here. Very able and people friendly administration also.
Achara is spot on.. It is epic story telling with intense character drama, with deceit, wars, romance and everything.. just that Kalki wrote the story in the 50s compared to RR Martin wrote Song of Ice and Fire volume in early 90s..

Characterisation and story is everything here. PS has such strong characters, it connects to you on a personal level which doesn't happen in historical movies. We usually watch the movie's grandeur and feel goosebumps, thats it. In movies like these, trailers can't convey enough or do no justice. Wait for the movie. 🔥💜

Historical context: This story happens in the 10th century when the other 2 south Indian dynasties - the pandiyas and cheras - have been subjugated by the Cholas. karikala cholan (elder brother of raja raja chola - role played by Vikram) is on a mission to conquer central india, while raja raja cholan (played by jeyam ravi) has conquered most of sri lanka. The story revolves around vanthiya thevan (best friend of karikala cholan - played by Karthi). The story happens in south india and srilanka. It's an extremely interesting political drama that unfolds at this time. The peak of chola dynasty comes 75 years later, when they build the biggest navy of the world at contemporary times and sailed across the Indian Ocean to conquer south east Asian countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia. There are historical novels like kadal pura that revolve around this period. Hope PS becomes a hit, so the producers will be motivated to make more such historical movies.
Ponniyin Selvan is like Game of Thrones of South India. (PS came decades before GOT) The politics and drama in the novel is much much much better than bahubali. Don't know how much they'll be able to get. Aishwarya's character is the main twist here 😃, those who've read the novel , know this 😁!! But if you haven't read the novel, I suggest you not to read it before watching the movie.

Jayam ravi's character is a man pf ethos... Vikrams character is bold... Karthi's character is a romantic lovable guy..... I am 100% sure after watching the movie people would adore Jayam ravi's character. There is a reference of Sri lanka and Burma in the trailer. The scale is huge. I hope for the best..
It is based on astotu which was serialised in a Tamil weekly. When I was in higher school we used to wait for the weekly magazine which came on Thursdays. Who got it first happened to read it first. And the illustrations were epic. I can still recollect them. Written by a great Tamil writer called kalki.

Hey Jaby and Achara! The reason that this movie needs to have parts is because the entire epic is 5 books long. Mani Ratnam, however, has planned and apparently covered the entirety in just 2 parts. The detailing in the books is legendary. Fitting even one book into one film is a difficult task. That's the reason why it's taken more than five decades of attempts to finally get to this recreation on the big screen. It wouldn't be a surprise if 5 separate movies are made on each book in the future.

Guys, You gotta read the books too, atleast the first one. It has five books. It's historical fiction. Every character got established in this trailer like an intro. 1:55 this shot reminds me of the space ships in Dune in the beginning, kinda epic, I gotta say, never seen the front of a ship open up like that. Although I know this has nothing related to Dune(2021), both share some interesting parallels, both are based off of a novel, both are epics, both have conflicts with a lot of family stuff and treachery going on, both of the movies are divided into two parts.
They tried to make film based on the novel for three decades. First mgr, later kamal and mani himself 3 times. It was very difficult to convert the novel into movie. It was huge,grand and plot twost itself huge.

This is Mani Ratnam's third attempt at this, it's a rich story, he's waited for over 30 years for this, I heard that even MGR wanted to make an adaptation of the novel. So with this much weight behind it, I feel this will be Mani Ratnam's magnum opus.
His narration of The History of Tamilnadu in the Chess Olympiad is the best! The mixture of both English & Tamil and his fluency in both the languages 🔥
This is going to be a 2 part franchise. And the fact is they have shot both parts. So they is no worry about the budget. This was maniratnam's dream project. Both parts were shot with a budget of 500 crores.

I have read the original story in Tamil that was published in a serialized from in the magazine "Kalki". A lot of people in the past attempted to make a movie out of this Magnum Opus Classic but all failed. That is, until Mani Ratnam took this challenge and seems to have done a fabulous job just looking at the Trailer. This story spans generations and has mystery, romance, violence, comedy you name it. I hope the whole movie is as good as the Trailer.
Archara, the story is based on 2 facts - Karikagalan, crown prince was killed and eventually, Arulmozhi - Raja Raja cholan gave up his thrown to his uncle for decade or so. Kalki - novel writer studied various inscriptions and travelled across Chola footholds in India and Srilanka for 5 yrs before writting this epic novel. To keep the story gripping, few fictional characters are added. You rightly called out, it's Indian GoT. It's a family feud to win the Chola throne.

Vanakkam! The opening fight reminded Gladiator, the scenes between Vikram and Vikram Prabhu, the sea shore fight in Sri Lanka reminded of Troy, the scene where Karthi was alone in the sea reminded of Life of Pai, the rescue scenes of Ooman Rani reminded of The Lord of the Rings. the fight sequence of Karthi at the Fort reminded of The Scorpion King. Apart from these things the characterization is well handled. The cinematography and the lighting is enjoyable. The costumes and the use of jewelry takes the audience to the time. Sure there will be orders pouring into many jewelry shops at least in Tamilnadu. All the characters are well portrayed by the seasoned artists of our film industry. Being a telugu speaking person, I have been searching for the books in English/Telugu. Sadly i could not find best translation of it.

karikala cholan (one who built the kallanai dam) is different, aaditha karikaalan is different. Karikala's period predated paranthaka period.

It is based on astotu which was serialised in a Tamil weekly. When I was in higher school we used to wait for the weekly magazine which came on Thursdays. Who got it first happened to read it first. And the illustrations were epic. I can still recollect them. Written by a great Tamil writer called kalki.

The reason that this movie needs to have parts is because the entire epic is 5 books long. Mani Ratnam, however, has planned and apparently covered the entirety in just 2 parts.
The detailing in the books is legendary. Fitting even one book into one film is a difficult task. That's the reason why it's taken more than five decades of attempts to finally get to this recreation on the big screen.
It wouldn't be a surprise if 5 separate movies are made on each book in the future.

Guys, You gotta read the books too, atleast the first one. It has five books. It's historical fiction. Every character got established in this trailer like an intro. Definitely guys watch it, the politics, dialogues, the story layers and the non linear story telling of Kalki, Super stoked for this. Fun fact : They already completed shooting for both part 1 and 2.
Achara Kirk is spot on, she really knows background of the movie before and yes the novel is fictional, there was no Nandini , paluvetraiyars in chola dynasty, the Chola dynasty is real and very epic for us..

1:55 this shot reminds me of the space ships in Dune in the beginning, kinda epic, I gotta say, never seen the front of a ship open up like that. Although I know this has nothing related to Dune(2021), both share some interesting parallels, both are based off of a novel, both are epics, both have conflicts with a lot of family stuff and treachery going on, both of the movies are divided into two parts.
They tried to make film based on the novel for three decades. First mgr, later kamal and mani himself 3 times. It was very difficult to convert the novel into movie. It was huge,grand and plot twost itself huge.

This is Mani Ratnam's third attempt at this, it's a rich story, he's waited for over 30 years for this, I heard that even MGR wanted to make an adaptation of the novel. So with this much weight behind it, I feel this will be Mani Ratnam's magnum opus.

Dude without ps 1 entering profit zone there is no way they will do ps 2 after watching trailer and everything outside of TN it's gonna flop anyway. So the possibility of ps 2 is very low.

I have read the original story in Tamil that was published in a serialized from in the magazine "Kalki". A lot of people in the past attempted to make a movie out of this Magnum Opus Classic but all failed. That is, until Mani Ratnam took this challenge and seems to have done a fabulous job just looking at the Trailer.
This story spans generations and has mystery, romance, violence, comedy you name it.
I hope the whole movie is as good as the Trailer.
Archara, the story is based on 2 facts - Karikagalan, crown prince was killed and eventually, Arulmozhi - Raja Raja cholan gave up his thrown to his uncle for decade or so.
Kalki - novel writer studied various inscriptions and travelled across Chola footholds in India and Srilanka for 5 yrs before writting this epic novel. To keep the story gripping, few fictional characters are added.

When it comes to Maniratnam sir, you know you'll get style + substance. The legendary filmmaker 🙏🙏🙏.
Vanakkam! The opening fight reminded Gladiator, the scenes between Vikram and Vikram Prabhu, the sea shore fight in Sri Lanka reminded of Troy, the scene where Karthi was alone in the sea reminded of Life of Pai, the rescue scenes of Ooman Rani reminded of The Lord of the Rings. the fight sequence of Karthi at the Fort reminded of The Scorpion King. Apart from these things the characterization is well handled. The cinematography and the lighting is enjoyable. The costumes and the use of jewelry takes the audience to the time. Sure there will be orders pouring into many jewelry shops at least in Tamilnadu. All the characters are well portrayed by the seasoned artists of our film industry. The background music and the songs are delivered well by A R Rahman. Well choreographed dances by Brindha. Lovely lines by the lyricists. Thank you Mr. Mani Ratnam- PONNIYIN SELVAN- Part-1.
