  • Hi
In this video, I'll do a disassembly of the HP Photosmart 5520 and replace the printhead. The process is the same for the 5510 and some other similar printers.
Did I help you saving money telling you how to fix your printer by yourself? If that's the case and you would like to contribute actively supporting my channel and the content I make, you can donate any amount you want (even 1$ is more than appreciated) to help me create better videos at the link www.paypal.me/paolomarcelli
Of course, if you don't want to donate I'll still be here for any question regarding printer repair.
    How to contact me:
If you need help fixing your printer, leave a comment under the video you're watching. I always reply to the comments whenever I have some time.
For commercial requests, send me an email to the address you can find in the "about" section of my RUclips Channel. Please consider that any email received for any reason other than commercial requests will probably be ignored. I don't have a service center and I don't do repairs for other people, I just make RUclips videos on how to fix printers :)

Excellent video. It can also be used to replace the printhead on 6000 series Photosmart Printers.
The 5000 series printer is VERY similar to the 6000 series, but there are a few minor differences:
    • It is NOT necessary to remove the display on the 6000 series. There are two screws behind the display that will have to be removed. Tilt the display forward to find these screws.
    • It is NOT necessary to remove the nameplate and unscrew the speaker.
    • The 640A printhead (6000 series) has four ribbon cable connectors instead of the three on the 688A printhead (5000 series).
    • Other than that, this video will pretty much guide you through the printhead replacement for 6000 series printers as well.
Thanks for posting this very useful video.

@@PaoloMarcelli it was leaving streaks across the paper. I bought a new one and kept the old one. Buying a replacement head to see of that fixes it. If so i will keep it as a back up. Hi!
I'm sorry, but this video shows the printhead replacement, as title states ;)
Cleaning the printhead is pretty easy anyway, you just take it on a paper tissue with the nozzle plates facing up and you pour some cleaning solution on it, then after 5-10 minutes you dry and wipe it, then you place the printhead on a paper tissue with the nozzle plate facing down and you pour a few drops of cleaning solution on the ink inlet ports on the head, and press down gently on the paper tissue until the printhead absorbs the cleaning solution. Repeat this until you see nothing but cleaning solution on the paper tissue.
      Hope this helps

Nice video man. I was close to throwing it away. Long intervals in-between use. No black, but now it's back. First couple of pages printed ok. Then faded out. Let it sit for a few hours. Working like new again. Print head took a lot of flushing with some home brew solvent. Used distilled water in a small jar, 3 teaspoons of 70% alcohol, a couple DROPS of Dawn dish soap.

Hello Paolo I need your help fixing my printer 🙏😩 !!!! Plz respond because I'm so lost not knowing what's wrong with ittt
Ok so first of all your videos are just great and very helpful and informative, big thanks for posting them 👍👍👍👍👍
    And second, here's my problem:
My printer is a Hp deskjet 3070a and I changed the printhead to a new one following exactly your steps, because I accidentally damaged my old one by trying to clean it, but it was still working and printing. The only thing is that it didn't print magenta and cyan wich were the damaged filters, but everthing else was working fine. Now, changed the printhead to the new one and when I turn it on seems like it moves normally but when I try to print or copy I doesn't move, the menu says "copying" or "printing" but it stays like that and the carriage doesn't move, it's paralyzed, I press cancel and then the menu says "canceling" but the menu stays like that until I unplug it. Changed it back to the old one thinking that the new one could be faulty and the problem stayed the same, so now it doesn't print at all 😓 what happened?? I plugged the flatcables and inserted the encoder strip correctly so... What could be the problem :( ?

HP photosmart c510a I had an issue with the msg "printhead problem remove all cartridges. Next lift grey latch and remove printhead. Then re-install printhead and cartridges." There was nothing wrong with the printhead, this printer was brand new. I ended up ooening the cover to get to the printhead and disconnected all flat wires then 8nserted them back in. I think it reset itself this way (kinda like turning on and off). Well just thought I would share since it worked for me. Thisbalso helped with the ink cartridges damage error msg.

Hoping you are still replying to this video. I have a HP Photosmart 6520 that I bought used. The print head was clogged so I cleaned and reinstalled but it was still not working well. Especially the Black. So I ordered an OEM replacement and installed it. I had issues when I first started it with a faulty printhead error so I reinstalled it ensuring that I had the printhead cartridge fully back in the parked position and the cleaning system all the way forward. I believe that I got the error because I did not fully engage the cleaning system before testing it.
This time when I started it I did not get the same error but got error code 0xc19a0003. I have unplugged the printer for up to 5 minutes and tried again but still receiving the same error code. I have restarted the printer while depressing the lid switch so I could see it cycle and the cleaning system fully retracts and the print head comes up and runs the length of the guide rod but does not print anything and when it reaches the end of that first pass it errors out and the carriage will only return to the parked position when I power down the printer.
Any ideas as to what is going on and what I may try to fix this problem. I should also note that these problems or error codes were never triggered with the old printhead

    • @PaoloMarcelli
      @PaoloMarcelli  5 лет назад

      Hi!
Of course I'm still replying, I reply to every comment under everyone of my videos :)
Well the fact that you didn't fully engage the service station or cleaning unit after you replaced the printhead means nothing really, I have done that in my video just to leave the printer in the same way it usually powers off, but if you replace the printhead without returning the service station to its position the printer should do it automatically.
Said that, I think you have a faulty/defective printhead or the flat cables that connects to that are not in good conditions even if it seems like a less frequent case.
Just to be sure, try to reinsert the old printhead and see if the error persists, if it doesn't show any error the printhead is bad and you need to contact who sold it to you asking for a replacement.

Thank you for the response. I have been in contact with the seller of the printhead. He has been helpful.
Here is where I am at now. I reinstalled the old print head expecting no error code but I am still getting the same error code, (0xC19A0003) that I got with the new print head. I did not have this error code with this old head prior. In fact the only issue with the old print head was that would not print black even after multiple cleanings the black output was very poor. Because of this I believe that all of the flat cables are in acceptable condition.
As with the new printhead when I got this error I did a hard reset by unplugging the printer while it is on and then plugging it back in which is a solution I have located on multiple websites. Now with the old printhead reinstalled it immediately goes to the error code where as the new printhead would not error until I tried a test print. In other words it seems to be an even more severe situation with the old head than with the new.
On top of all that, when I attempt to shutdown the printer in the correct way via the power button it is now hanging in the shutdown mode for 10 minutes now. So now I am going to go and unplug it. I did another hard restart and am now able to turn off the printer the correct way but still goes right to the same error code.
Curious if, in your opinion, I have hit a wall or if there is other things that can be attempted to rectify the situation.
      Thanks, Bill

Are you sure you're having a problem to the paper sensor? Those printers sometimes have problems picking up and taking the paper sheets to the main roller, but most of the times it's not a sensor issue!

I have a hp photosmart 5510 and currently have a carriage jam issue. The printer makes a horrible noise and displays an error message "Carriage Jam". After opening the access door I see the carriage is stuck at the right (I can only move it a couple of cm to the left). I manage to turn the white wheels on either side with a screwdriver, so that the device beneath the carriage moves towards the back. At some point I manage to overcome the stuck position so that I can move the carriage by hand all the way to the left and right. Then I turn on the printer and it sounds like normal start, however after a few seconds it gets stuck again, the horrible noise starts and the error message (carriage jam) displays again. I tried to do a factory reset but the printer does not let me do it. Please any ideas?

      Hi!
This is a common issue on that model, the cleaning station/purge unit is broken, but there are no available parts to be found anywhere.
The problem consists of 2 or 3 teeth at the left side of the cleaning station that are worn out and broken. Other than the parts being impossible to find it's not an easy fix either.
Sorry for the bad news :/

After I cleaned the printhead many times without more succes then before, I replaced it now with a new one. But STILL it is not printing black!
I tried 4 new black cartridges already. The other colors work fine, but just not black. I have the newest firmware running. Has anyone another idea?

Hi! There's clogged ink buildup inside of the purge pump. It's divided in two sections and the black is the one that creates more problems. There's no way to replace it because HP doesn't sell those parts and no one has even in third party. There's a way to unclog it but it's a biiig mess because you have to disassemble it completely and create pressure at one side of the pump and depressurize the other side while turning the gear the proper direction.
I'd make a video on that if I had a printer with that problem to repair :/

@@don-oe9gp If you're from any part of Europe I'd fix it for free just to make the video on it, but if you're from outside EU it wouldn't even make sense just for shipping, import & export duties. The 5520 all considered it's a nice machine, but it had some problems like all the HPs XD

My 5525 same problem - I took out print head and cleaned, etc. but no luck. Looks like time for a new one. I had this one for a few years so at least lasted some time. I hate throwing things away though that otherwise could be fixed. Be nice if they move towards better design. btw Paolo - this video helped me with the springs because I did not know how to put them back. Thanks!

      Hi!
Are you 100% sure that there's absolutely no water on the PCB and in the connectors? Spray every connector and part of the PCB with compressed air and be sure it's dry before you reinsert it, if it doesn't fix the issue you could have a damaged printhead :/
      Here's a printhead compatible with the 5520 for 12€
