@ChrisThompson-qq9zs Great question! I like my Channel to remain focused on the quality of the content that I make. Thank you for watching my video and have a great day!
As long as it looks smells and tastes fine i don't worry about the best buy date. I had applesauce that expired in 2020 and it was fine. It's a use your judgment kinda thing.
Hi Sarah, Loving your channel! I wouldn't worry about ANY of the "best before" dates as they aren't 'expiry dates". I truly believe corporations know people use the best before dates as expiry dates, and are hoping people will toss perfectly fine products out (being afraid to use the products past that magic go bad by date) and then they'll go out and purchase more (more money for them if they do this). There once was a time where manufacturers weren't required to put best before dates on packaging (yes, I'm that old LOL). We didn't worry, and could only use our common sense. If it smells or looks bad then toss it. I personally don't recall anyone I know dying from using anything that may have been in the cupboard awhile. There's actually a lot of info coming out about this exact thing. It's sad how so much food gets tossed because people have been brainwashed into believing they'll die if they eat anything past the best before date. Enjoy your food pantry food, and have a great weeK!
Thank you so much for watching! Good points you made. Using our senses to test if a food smells bad or tastes bad is important. Whenever something looks off or smells strange, I just let it go. I had food poisoning from a restaurant one time and never forgot that experience, ever! I hope you have a great night!
@@CareFreeLivingChannel I actually have gotten food poisoning from a restaurant as well (I'll never forget it either)... with that said, I've never gotten food poisoning from food I've made at home, and I don't pay much (if any) attention to the "Best Buy" dates lol!
Kind bars are good! I think they are hard because it is mostly nuts. There should be nothing wrong with it, just personal likes and dislikes of things. Have a great day!
I'm going to try to soften it up, we shall see how that works out! I remember eating Kind bars some years back, and really liked them. They might be great added to oatmeal!
The expired oat flakes should be ok. If no bugs or smell. Sometimes you can smell the packaging but depletes with cooking. I'd cook it little cinnamon, brown sugar helps.😊 Cut mold away from cheese. Freeze or fridge shredded in little baggie . I always shred cheese so i can mold bag into available freezer space. Great video your plants are looking good. Sarah, the minute I saw the cheese tray at the food pantry, I knew it would be in your house! I love the salads you put together. I'm a big salad eater and I think you do an awesome job with your salads. Just love it when you go to the food pantry.
Hi Tink! I'm so happy the indoor plants are doing well, yay! The plates of food are fun to put together. I'm glad to get salads from the food pantry. Food pantry is helping me eat healthier. Have a wonderful night, Tink!
I know what you mean! I have some canned chicken from 2023 I've been eating and so far, so good. I'm making effort to re-package items that come in boxes into glass jars or other containers.
WITH CHEESE, you can cut the mold off and the rest is still good. Cheese is moldy before they package it for manufacturing so it's just doing what it does. Just cut the mold off and enjoy.
I don’t worry about best by dates for canned or dried things. I don’t think they’ll be bad, but they may lose flavor. If they’re not stale, then they’re ok. Always check if they smell good, look good.
That's right! If it smells good and looks good, that's a good sign! I've been eating canned chicken that's still good although it's beyond the best by date. So far I cannot tell the difference!
I would open it, Is visually inspected, And smell it. If it passed those 3 things I would try it. I just made a pot of vegetable soup today that had kids from 2022 and they were fine.
If I have the opportunity to own a small home I would have one like yours ❤️. By the way when you purchased your home did you had to move it to where you are at? Do you own the land or is it a community? Do you pay for your space/lot? Is it very expensive and do they increase the rent every year? Here in Florida the lots for RV or trailer homes can go from $550 to 1200. Thank you for all of your videos and sharing your home and life with us 😉😍😍
@@variniaarocha7695 I was very fortunate to get my place during the Pandemic! It was already set up on land. I own the trailer but not the land. Living in a smaller home is a lot of fun. It's like a puzzle, trying to figure out how to make it "go together". When I got my place, I ran out of renovation money so it was a "bare bones" type reno. As I was able, I found things at the dump, and bought things at the thrift store and online to fill up my home! It's great to have furniture again! I hope you have a wonderful day and so glad to know you enjoy my channel!
I love your channel.I think it’s smart of you to always get those beautiful cheese trays.Cheese is delish, lasts a long time, and is so expensive!I always loved when I lived in VA and Kroger had the premade food. The meatloaf and grilled chicken were so good, I see you get that.My favorite though was their scalloped potatoes…I’ve never had better.
Thank you for watching! The prepared food items are wonderful to have. I enjoy it so much, especially the cheese trays. Trying new items is so much fun. Have a great night!
@@CareFreeLivingChannel I hope you have a good one.I am trying.I had a head on collision 3 weeks ago and now I’m out of the hospital but recovering in a nursing home I am 46 with a bunch of 80+.Now norovirus is running rapidly through the place.Help!I can’t catch a break. So, I am staying in my room trying to not get sick since broken ribs and back along with stomach surgery won’t mix well with a virus.I am watching all my fave RUclipsrs and you happen to be one of them.I am catching up on the ones I missed while in the hospital.
Thank you! The food pantry helps me eat better quality foods. When I got my place, I ate a lot of instant grits and oatmeal. Applying to the food pantry completely upgraded my meals. Thank you for watching!
As far as the 2021, I would smell it, if it has nuts, they can then to spoil. But I’d also taste it and if it taste ok then I’d be ok with it. The dates on packages, I consider them more as a guide or recommendation not saying that you CANNOT eat it after this date. I haven’t gotten thru the rest of the video yet…continuing on
That's a good point! Smelling food is important. The oatmeal packs do have chia seed and flax seeds added. I think flax might go rancid, but I'm definitely going to give it the "sniff" test!
iT'S GOOD to know that salad bowl could get stuck to the top of your nice stainless bowl that could come in handy if you need it to if you need to transport something in that bowl.
Generally cheese does get moldy. I just cut off the mold and eat the good part. The exception is bread, because the mold spores can travel throughout the porous bread easily. Living in a warm climate I generally refrigerate bread--which I hate to do--just to extend the life of bread. Also on expired stuff, I sniff, taste and visually judge an item. Some things like nuts go rancid, but most shelf stable things seem fine.
That's good info on the difference between mold on bread versus cheese, thank you for that! In my trailer, it can get super hot in the spring and summer. When it does, even when the air conditioner is on, bread starts molding up. I might start putting bread in the fridge, too. I'm still eating canned chicken with a best by date of 2023, and it's been OK so far!
Yes refrigerating bread helps. As I mentioned I don't like cold bread, but the airfryer is definitely a Godsend! Have a great day Sarah, always enjoying your videos!
Check for pantry bugs. I used too not worry about things past their date but just this month I got something from my food pantry and it had bugs. Everything that wasn't sealed tight had too be thrown away.
Things that have flax and other seeds contain oil that can go rancid. Smell and taste should give you more info. It also depends on how it was stored - temperature, etc.
That's true! I used to keep flax seed oil in the fridge and remember it can go bad (rancid). The oatmeal will be an experiment, gotta do the "sniff" test!
That is mold on the cheese. You can cut it off and it is still safe to eat. Used to buy 50 pound wheels of Colby cheese. If it started to mold cut about a quarter inch off. The mold is normally on the rind only.
@@CareFreeLivingChannel Tiedtke's department store used to get a 2500 pound wheel of cheddar in around Thanksgiving. They would have it on display until about two weeks before Christmas then chop it into 1 pound blocks and sell it. I ate cheese from that wheel up until the store closed in 1972. This was in Toledo Ohio. You can search on Google for Toledo cheese wheel and find a picture. They still do this to this day at different locations in Toledo
Couldn't tell what kind of food that is but yes I'd eat it if the inner package is sealed and it's not stale or rancid. It's all part of emergency preparedness.
Great point! It's good to be prepared for just in case situations. The 2021 item is oatmeal with quinoa, flax seed and chia seed. I don't usually see items 3 years out, so it was a surprise when I got home!
I don't usually care about best buy dates as long as it smells and tastes OK. But I'd be wary of things with flax seed. It seems to go off pretty quickly. If it smells like an oil painting don't eat it, lol.
That made me laugh about the oil painting! Yes, using our senses to determine if something is still good is important. I used to add flax seed oil to my diet. And I kept it in the fridge. Back then, I had a big refrigerator! Have a great day and thank you for watching!
It might not be your go to, but all those perishables can be frozen (except the lettuce ofcourse). And that cheese, i've personally had some outside mold but nothing on the inside, so i just cut that off, grated the cheese and put it in the freezer.
I've thought about getting a chest freezer, it would be nice to have. I don't quite have the space for it. If I re-arrange some items I might be able to do that one day!
My parents had lasagna noodles that expired in 2001. I had already made the lasagna when my husband pointed out the date 😮. The lasagna was delicious and everyone was ok 😅😂
Thank you for letting me know! I am wondering if my fridge is losing temperature because I did not notice the mold at the food pantry when shopping. It might be time for an upgrade!
Hi Sarah, yes that was some mold spots on your cheese. In most cases you can cut the moldy part off, plus about a quarter of an inch more-that’s if the cheese looks and smells ok. Also, canned items are usually good past the expiration date, if the can is not dented or swollen. If anything, just the quality might be affected a little. I don’t know what boxed item you received though. That’s different than canned, so I would not take the chance. It’s certainly not appetizing anyway, knowing it’s that old. Maybe you can nicely ask the food pantry if you can exchange it.❤
Thank you for the cheese info! The oatmeal packs have quinoa, flax seed and chia seed added to them. They are individually wrapped in plastic. I think the date was just hard to read, sometimes the print is too small! When I go back to the food pantry, I bet I'll find some more oatmeal. Thank you for watching tonight and have a great evening!
Hi Sarah! Nice video and haul…thanks for sharing. I really want a cheese tray! They always look so good. Could you microwave your Kind bars for a moment or so to try to soften them up? I’m like you-soft over hard and crunchy. See you In the next video. Take care. 😀👋🏻
Hi Judy! Good idea on microwaving the Kind bars to make them softer, I'll try that. The cheese trays are wonderful. I absolutely enjoy them. Have a great night, Judy!
I don’t understand why people don’t realize if there’s too much sodium in canned food you just rinse it off. With clear water. The sodium is in the liquid. Funny.
That did look like some mold on the cheese. If it’s a hard cheese you can cut those areas off and still eat it. However, I usually throw it out anyway. I just don’t like to take the risk.
The amount of food pantry items are for a 1-person household! I do share some of the items, so it's wonderful to be able to do that. Thank you for watching!
I have a question. I help at a food pantry and donate, would it bother you like if I got instant oatmeal in bulk size, Would it bother you if I took them separated them out of bulk box, and placed like 8 pouches in ziplock bag, this way I can share and feed more people. If the product is canned yes I would but if its a cake mix or something like that then no I wouldn't
That's a great question, Lois! My food pantry has offered re-packaged bulk items just one time I can recall. I think most people shy away from it because they don't know who has handled the product. I would pass on the re-packaged item. I hope you have a great night, Lois!

Very nice and healthy food pantry haul. The raspberry eclaire looked really yummy. 😋 Those Kind bars are really good. I hope are able to try some of one.
Enjoy your week! 😊
I don't pay attention to dates unless it smells bad.
Thank you! The dessert was terrific. So glad to get it. I will try the Kind bars soon! Have a wonderful week, too!
@@sharonadcock7071 I am the same way too. I always do the see, smell, & taste test on most items. The dates really do not mean much.
@sharonadcock7071 It's always a good idea to give it the "sniff" test!
Yay another great food pantry video! Seems like your man has been a great help filming part of the video! Love how you eat salads every day! As for health reasons I am limited to eat raw veggies and fruits! But love to watch your ideas in the kitchen
Thank you so much! The food pantry helps me eat better. Getting salads are fantastic. I love the salad kits! I'm glad you enjoyed tonight's video.
@@CareFreeLivingChannelyes for sure! We all need to eat healthy!❤❤❤
It's a great health goal to have in 2024!
@@CareFreeLivingChannelfor sure! Life long commitment! I love how you named stuffed bunny honey bunny! Awww that's a cute story! Honey Bunny is the perfect size, sometimes I just hold her like a real-life pet! Take care and see you on Friday!
Sarah, the minute I saw the cheese tray at the food pantry, I knew it would be in your house! I love the salads you put together. I'm a big salad eater and I think you do an awesome job with your salads. Just love it when you go to the food pantry.
Oh yes, the cheese tray came home with me! I love making the salads and eating more veggies. Thank you so much for watching!
You got some good stuff.❤
Yes it's a great blessing to be able to shop at the food pantry!
Love your plates you make! Of course love the plant area! Enjoy your weather! ~ Tink
Hi Tink! I'm so happy the indoor plants are doing well, yay! The plates of food are fun to put together. I'm glad to get salads from the food pantry. Food pantry is helping me eat healthier. Have a wonderful night, Tink!
That first salad you ate looked great 🙂
Thank you, Tink! I love salads!
Good evening nice haul❤
Good evening to you! Thank you for watching and have a great night!
Sarah I was relieved when you said that was cinnamon on your apples because I was worried it was black pepper. 😂
Haha! I've never tried pepper on fruit, maybe it would be good! I prefer cinnamon on apples!
That Best Buy date wouldn’t bother me, but there could be bugs in it. Just be aware. Enjoy! Great food blessings!
Good point! Thank you for watching my video. I really enjoy shopping at the food pantry!
I don't worry about the best buy date. As long as the can isn't distended or jar lid top hasn't popped, I eat it. Boxed items maybe a little stale.
I know what you mean! I have some canned chicken from 2023 I've been eating and so far, so good. I'm making effort to re-package items that come in boxes into glass jars or other containers.
Thanks for entertaining me. Great video. I think your last meal looked the best. Cheesy bread, yum. Have a great week!!!
Thank you for watching! The cheese bread is so good, I enjoy it! I hope you have a great week, too.
It is mould but you can chop it of and grate it up and still use it its perfectly harmless godbless mrs Bolton
Thank you for letting me know, Mrs. Bolton!
❤
Thank you for watching my video tonight!
WITH CHEESE, you can cut the mold off and the rest is still good. Cheese is moldy before they package it for manufacturing so it's just doing what it does. Just cut the mold off and enjoy.
I was surprised to see the mold! But you're right, cheese can get moldy.
Slice the mold off cheese& taste..if it tastes good,it is.😊
I was surprised to see the mold! Thank you for watching my video!
Cute bunny
The bunny is so cute! Sometimes I hold her like a real pet!
I would open it, Is visually inspected, And smell it. If it passed those 3 things I would try it. I just made a pot of vegetable soup today that had kids from 2022 and they were fine.
Good point! Inspecting food is important. I have canned chicken with a best by date of late 2023 and so far it's been fine. Have a wonderful day!
Sarah! I love your home....it feels cozy ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much! I enjoy living here, it's a wonderful home for me. I love to make it better in any way I can. Have a great night!

The oatmeal should perfectly fine the best by date doesn't really matter. What a blessing everything look wonderful.
I think flax might go rancid, but I'm definitely going to give it the "sniff" test!
for that item that expired in 2021, I would open it and give it a looksy. And if it smells and looks fine I would eat it since it's non perishible.
I gotta do the "sniff" test on that oatmeal. It's got some seeds in it, so we shall see (and smell)!
iT'S GOOD to know that salad bowl could get stuck to the top of your nice stainless bowl that could come in handy if you need it to if you need to transport something in that bowl.
That's a great idea! It was funny that it got stuck. It's good to have options!
That's really interesting to know that that salad bowl could act as a lid for your favorite salad bowl.
Yes that was a fun discovery!
I absolutely love your videos I have watched every single one 🖤
Thank you so much! I'm happy to know it! I enjoy sharing the plates of food I put together. Thank you for watching my channel!
Check for pantry bugs. I used too not worry about things past their date but just this month I got something from my food pantry and it had bugs. Everything that wasn't sealed tight had too be thrown away.
Oh I'm sorry to hear that! Thank you for making the point on pantry bugs. A necessary topic to keep in mind!
I was going to say exactly this. :)
I'd smell it. You'd know if the flax seed went rancid. If it smelled good I'd definitely eat it.
Yes, gotta do the "sniff" test! I was surprised to see the 2021 date, but it might be just fine to eat. We shall see!
That is mold on the cheese. You can cut it off and it is still safe to eat. Used to buy 50 pound wheels of Colby cheese. If it started to mold cut about a quarter inch off. The mold is normally on the rind only.
Thank you for the suggestion! I've never seen a 50 pound wheel of cheese. That's pretty cool!
I googled the giant cheese wheel. Wow! That was incredible. It looks like a lot of fun!
You live in a beautiful place
Thank you so much! I love my home. I've lived in many places and moved so much, this has become a wonderful place for me. Thank you for watching!
Wow! I'm glad the lasagna was still good!
You can just cut the mold off the cheese and it will be just fine.
Love the containers u repackage the food in. Where did u find them?
Got the re-usable container set from the dollar store. I like them, too!
I don’t understand why people don’t realize if there’s too much sodium in canned food you just rinse it off. With clear water. The sodium is in the liquid. Funny.
Thank you for the information! It's always great to learn.
you can cut off the edge of these cheese, but it wasn't green or blue could just be where they shrink wrapped plastic around it
Thank you, Lois! That's good to know.
That did look like some mold on the cheese. If it’s a hard cheese you can cut those areas off and still eat it. However, I usually throw it out anyway. I just don’t like to take the risk.
I think it's mold, too! I did not realize it had mold when I got it from the food pantry. It was a surprise when I got home!
Enjoy your vlog. Do you have a job? Blessings

Is this all for you.
The amount of food pantry items are for a 1-person household! I do share some of the items, so it's wonderful to be able to do that. Thank you for watching!
I think thats a steam p/ frying basket
That's a clever idea, hadn't thought of the basket for steaming or frying!
you should let the food pantry know how out of date that box was.
Thanks for your suggestion! I was surprised when I got home. Sometimes those dates are hard to read.
