Genealogy is such an amazing way to understand history, especially when you learn not only your family's stories but how World events shaped your family.
@keno2285 Yes! Never accept other people's trees as fact! Worst mistake to make, especially at the beginning! Always try to find evidence through DNA and records!
Here because I started a family tree when I was 10 and now have almost 4,000 people in it at the age of 20. I have helped many relatives that lost contact reconnect and build new relationships. I am a sophomore in college as a pre-med but after this semester I am considering changing my path to become a genealogist. It's so frustrating that it has taken me this long to realize that the pre-med route might not be for me. I hope to gain more clarity soon.
I can see why you might want to rethink pre med….but the most important thing to consider is “usefulness” of a degree. How many jobs out there for genealogists? What do they make? Can you live anywhere and find work?
I've been doing this since I was like 13. Thankfully Scotland's records are fantastic so it's not hard. Struggling with my Irish records a little due to all the destroyed info but I'm making some headway.
Here is a GREAT webinar: Genealogical Treasures in Irish Archives. FREE for one week. familytreewebinars.com/download.php?webinar_id=1282&fbclid=IwAR3UgpqReQaR3NwSu1X6OHsO7gNJC417ZPqjaa7ozkPVn4eonoA_a-VSvdg
I've been at an Irish brick wall for quite a while. Why oh why did everyone have to be named *Kelly* ? Huge respect to this guy, wow. I assumed he was just playing with a pay site. But finding adopted people? That is fantastic. It's so addictive. I tell myself I will not spend 20 hours today on genealogy! Then I get a request from someone, and it's *such* a joy to help. I love the work, I love to be able to help. Would like to know how this young man is doing now!
i’d love to do this as a career, i’m 17 and i’ve been doing this since last year when my mum died and i’ve loved it ever since. my family think i should become a genealogist
I started building my family tree after a DNA test at age 14. Now 3 years later, I have my personal family tree with over 6000 people and have been working on others trees for years
I work better when i have someone to work off of, rather than doing all of it on my own but if you like puzzles its one that gets bigger with every piece you fit but never stops feeling satisfying!
Waited for this momemt so long! Yes! Check this, it helped me a lot - blog.foldermarker.com/2020/how-to-use-color-coding-in-genealogical-research/ or blog.foldermarker.com/2020/how-to-organize-handouts-and-thumb-drives-for-genealogy-research/
The more you start with, the better. So start with yourself of course, then write down your parents names, grandparents... I was fortunate enough to have three great grandparents alive during my lifetime, one until I was 28. So before I started doing this seriously, I had a lot of info. And look for *generous* people. We cannot do this without each other, we cannot hold back our .... there's a woman I run into occasionally who isn't generous, so I remind her of how many descendents of the Mayflower passengers there's are in the United States right now :0) I also have a Great Uncle who was a genealogist... I miss him so much. He passed away in 2002. Then I run across some data that originated with him. And it's a time machine. More than anything else, genealogy has taught me how *connected* We all are, which is awesome, and also has rooted me more deeply in my love of my country. AND an enormous desire to travel :0) But it's been less about me than ... making sure every person is remembered, and remembered with respect. That's very important. Sorry! I will learn to self-edit some day :)
@PM -305, Complete strangers send me messages all the time, so never be afraid to ask for help. A really good genealogist is also very generous. I'm always able to do what I do because of the work of someone I may not get to thank. The Mormon church is as a group incredibly generous, so there are always tons of their records online.
You are doing a wonderful thing. Keep up the good and hard work. I would love for you to help find my 92 year old mother's ancestors. She only knew her dad and his sister. We have tried but it just goes nowhere.
This is an awesome story. Thank you. My only question, is how sure can you be that the person you think is an ancestor is actually an ancestor? My seaches are on a very common, very familiar name, William Rogers.
Focus on siblings, middle names, aunts and uncles, street names or strange occupations! It can be done! If you can’t find him, look for a sibling or an aunt or uncle or cousin with a more unique name!

I'm shocked he's not from Utah.
Worf - lol I live in Utah and thought the same thing 😂
Everyone in Utah isn't Mormon. And I heard there are even genealogists in Oklahoma ;0)
I didnt know Allen Carr was a 18-year-old genealogy wiz.
What a brilliant guy. Highly inspiring👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I love nerds, they have no idea how important they are.
I want to have him help me trace my family
I found my birth family with nothing but my birth name and my birthday mother's age. I can do exactly what he's doing for anyone.
No, you can't. Some of those records are sealed up tighter than Fort Knox.
Hope he will find ❤️
It’s like a puzzle that never ends.

I've been doing this for years.

He could get a career in genealogy like I did
How much do you charge to do this would love to get my roots
With this nationwide CBS exposure, it looks like Eric Schubert will be very busy this summer. Good for him! I like stories with happy endings!
"A cure for boredom".
I mean, that is actually a cure for boredom for me sometimes

But deasofurtunally many Mexican récords are lost
See what guys can accomplish when we're trying to get the girl?

He was probably overwhelmed by mail after this.

Wow. You obviously didn't watch the whole piece. I felt judgey like that for a tenth of a second too.
How incredibly rude. And sad.

Then do it
He needs to gain weight and go to the gym
Jordan Burton Rude. If you choose not to say anything nice- say nothing.
Here to state genealogy has no effect on my existence, and I also don't participate in thanksgiving or any holiday
