Neil Young wrote this song in his early twenties. He always embraced the ideas for a better world filled with peace, love and understanding. Neil loves the planet and has never compromised his principles or reputation. "Keep on rocking in the free world". Thank you for your friendship, Neil, and being the brightest star in the universe.
This is Neil on the CSNY tour of 1970. I love the live 13 minute version on Four-Way Street, but this one is great also. They cut the studio version of this down to 5:30, but his song calls out for a jam like the one here.
Do people really believe that Neil Young would want them to talk smack to another human being to make themselves feel more comfortable in their own skin. This song was written to bring awareness to the ever present racial issues in the world. People need to a love a little more, and try to keep an open mind....
I've never seen a lynching with my own eyes but I have met quite a few folks who I think would be quite capable of performing one if they thought they cold get away with it and quite a few more who would be in the audience watching, many of those probably wouold be queing to get in the front row.
I think Neil Young had other things to worry about in 1973 (Dan Whitten, Bruce Berry) than a tongue-in-cheek response to this from Skynyrd, who were actually fans of Neil, and probably amicable if/when they did meet.
@ncw01ify he didn't hate southern people he was a man for equality and civil rights now you could see how a peace loving canadian man could look at the southern US and see lynchings going on well after the civil war ended and feel a bit of distaste for those who committed the crimes and that the majority of the law did nothing about it.
Feud?? Nobody notice Ronnie's favourite T-shirt? "Rumour" has it that Young helped carry Ronnie's coffin and that Ronnie was buried in TTN shirt but I haven't seen anything official to confirm that. All I know is that when asked about it there were smiles all around 😉
Completely lacking in your knowledge of history, eh? Non-racist southerners understood that this song was not addressing ALL southerners, but only those who had let their racist feelings motivate them to carry out atrocities against southern blacks. They understood that the racists were ruining the reputation of The South and they wished it would stop. You can only feel offended by this song if actually are racist, yourself, and you just don't want to hear it criticized by outsiders.
Slave owners made up less than .001% of the population. Former slaves are far better off than those that remained in Africa. American blacks were able to interbreed with whites and raise their IQ's from the sub saharan level to something close to what is needed to survive in the modern world. Blacks should be thankful and move on and better themselves.
The south went from racist at the time of this song to down right stupid. Now they worship a felon who quotes Hitler. Southern man get your heads out of your ass.
100% gold...everything nowadays is plated gold.
In 2024, it's gold lame, gold leaf or spray paint. We had a president who sat his ass on fake gold toilets.

This is one of Neil's rarest recordings, live at the Fillmore East with CS&N. Bless you for posting it!

rexiimmortalis I told that to my then-GF. She threw a tantrum, insisting that it was a racist track. Now she was from WV...

Vile subhumans would bring back lynchings...until it's THEIR neck on the noose.

This is great and Lynard skynard should go meet a northern backwood man. He will regret ever making that song.
they were friends though lol
@BWFSabian You mean 'Sweet Home Alabama' not 'Freebird'
@BWFSabian It's actually Skynyrd not Skynard

Southern Man don't need him around anyhow.
Alabam You Got The Rest Of The Union To Help You Along.
I don't understand Neil Young's hate for southern people. I'm a southern person. This song is just plain offensive.
It's only offensive to racists.
Stop being ridiculous.
