Having only recently obtained the kindle of Fagle's translation of the Odyssey and the Iliad, both on a super sale, I can say this episode along with the mention of Manly P Hall's lecture and ultimately this very source material by Thomas Taylor, I am thrilled to dive in headlong into this awesome allegorical reading by The Modern Hermeticist, Dan Attrell! A most appropriate offering for the algodaemons to carry incense smoke to Olympus!
When I read the Odyssey in secondary school I knew it had a deeper allegorical meaning of the soul's ascent, and ever since then I deeply desired an explanation like this. Many thanks to you for opening my eyes to the neoplatonic interpretation and the name Thomas Taylor. May your works be richly rewarded!
Edmund Burke’s “A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful” has been eye opening to me -thank you for this as well 🙏
Thomas Taylor is the goat, I have his second edition of the Orphic Hymns and the introduction hits like a freight train, the man was doing the big think. Simps for Proclus pretty hard though, and I'm mixed on the guy myself, but he's the big-brain in this domain so there's some magic there.
Thank you so much, I treasure this and have listened to it many times already. You're doing good work for those of us who care about Thomas Taylor and his life's work, thank you, Dr. Attrell. Your voice and reading are appropriate and complementary to the material that you're reading, it is all so beautifully well executed. You're the best. I listened to your reading of Taylor's "On the Cave of the Nymphs" many times before this came out, and had tentatively reached some of the conclusions elaborated here, which feels good, but to hear Taylor's later mature voice confirming these conclusions feels like a kind of wonderful validation. I've been enjoying your content for a few years, I purchased and read your translation of the Ghayat al Hakim, and I just want to say, thank you so much for being a scholar of care and conscience and cultivation. Personally, I've been reading Proclus' commentaries and each one is full of amazing and surprising insights, I just love the neoplatonists and their contributions to philosophy, theology, and culture, it seems to my mind to be the most refined and beautiful of all ways of thinking, and I wish more people had a chance to have contact with it, so I am very grateful for the work that you do.

Before the 20th century, in places where Latin/Roman influence outstripped Greek influence (i.e., everywhere in Western Europe), Latin names were far more customary.
@@TheModernHermeticist it's still Greek. The only Latin names i use are Mercury ( sounds much cooler) and Hercules. Latin is a far more beautiful language than ancient Greek, or what little i've heard of it, but The Odyssey is still a Greek story, centering on Odyssyus. I know the Odyssey, and the Iliad in Greek, or in English translations, using Greek names. I detrest the Roman names. We just can't get away from that Latin can we. I love the sound Latin but the Odyssey is Greek, and Odyssyus is its main character, and it always will be so. Funny in Italy, they call it the Odyssey and use the Greek names for the characters. Ever here this song? It's by an Italian Symphonic Metal band, but the reality is the hot chick singer, Nicoletta Roselini is the band. You might appreciate this song, " Cerce's Spell." Google the lyrics. This is her old band kaladia. She has a new band called "Alterium" which means nothing at all but she chose it guess why? Because it "sounded Latin" of course lol. True story.
