- A couple of short clips from Peter Gabriel's Secret World Tour DVD. Manu Katche on drums. Also featuring Tony Levin (Bass), David Rhodes (Guitar), Paula Cole (vocals), Jean-Claude Naimro (keyboards), Shankar (violin/vocals).
This has always been one of my favorite Manu moments. I get chills every time I see the part when he comes roaring out of the gate with that singlet tom roll. And the rest of the feature after that is just pure, in-your-face feel. Simply awesome.
Manu just flows like water on the drums, what an inspiration...
As a drummer I watch Manu in awe. He takes your breath away. His jazz playing with his own band is brilliant and he is by far the best drummer for PG. So good that they are together again.

I think Manu is the closest thing we've seen as a painter on the drums. He just colors everything so well.

My two favourite Peter Gabriel live tracks with Manu playing drums and I did some wiring work for the 1991 or 2 tour and saw a rehearsal in a hanger at RAF Benson in the UK. About 100 technicians there plus the two stages and the massive Brit Row PA. It was amazing but I didn't see any of the actual tour unfortunately. By the way, Peter G is one of the nicest and humble musicians I have ever met (first met him in 1987).
Manu also hired my Alesis D4 drum module for the tour. Such an influencial player and a big inspiration for me, now a 64 year old drummer in the UK.

I I'd have to choose ONE Album for the rest of my Live, Peter Gabriel's secret World would be it. I do own a lot of great albums from Dire Straits, U2, Mike Oldfield and many many more, but this is the greatest album ever made.
Kids thank you for embracing artistic creativity giving credence to these great souls!

Katche's got awesome skills. The 2004 tour was the best concert I have ever seen. Gabriel surrounds himself with talent and it always yields quality entertainment.
Nothing short of brilliant Manu is one drummer that can set the base/tone for any song or lay back and become invisible. He has the strongest traditional French Grip Ive seen with any accomplished drummer Check out his two solo Jazz albums, yet another facet of a great drummer!
Manu and Ian Herman (Tananas) the best for me. In another style, Nick Mason and Chester Thompson.

That WOMAD Peter Gabriel show was one of the best I've ever seen, hands down. The main reason was probably Manu Katche. His drumming was so bombastic and loud during these little solo sections...one of the only times I've had my breath taken away because of music.
Manu had a nice Yamaha set up, not sure if that was the lighting of the drums or if the drums were actually light blue - very pretty. I haven't seen that color in the USA or in the Yamaha catalog.
Manu Katche is a dervish. Amazing. Makes your hair stand up, controls your heart and soul -- and with Peter Gabriel, it's just electric.

I have always considered Manu Katche to be the best drummer I have ever heard, ever since hearing him on Jan Garbarek's albums Visible World & Twelve Moons (check out the drum-based song "Gautes-Margjit" from that album), & then hearing him with Peter Gabriel on this concert video Secret World Live.
Oh, I'm so happy to see that someone else discovered Manu Katché on those fantastic Garbarek albums!! Like Garbarek, Katché is a phenomenal musician with his own "sound" (when I recognised Katché's "sound" on Gabriel's songs, I was floored and exhilarated). He's indeed also the best drummer I've ever heard!
This is where great music gets the best out of a drummer like Manu Katche.

Big miss here, the song In Your Eyes. It has an amazing "world beat" so hard to play, it gives the impression there's 2 drummers to make the beat but in fact, he's alone and sweating. What a great drummer! In my Top5 all-time favorite.
Great drummer. Word is he will be playing with Gabriel again on upcoming tour for 25th Anniversary of "So". I'm "So" psyched.

This is child play compared to what he plays in the Jazz circle. The guy is really gifted with a unique sound.
As a 40-year drummer, it's very humbling to know that someone important called Manu Katche months before this tour and said "here's the situation" and he may have just said "sure."
I remember driving down I-95 and listening to this CD for the first time. I got goosebumps when I heard this guy's drum solo here. I still fondly recall that very moving musical experience.

The guy is the most tasteful and original sounding drummer from that period, he made the Gabriel stuff for me. All who followed him failed terribly, I saw Billy Cobham play with Gabriel and it was shite... check out the return fill after the breakdown in secret world.... he also played with Sting and Tears for Fears, check Badmans song. Also Somewhere down that crazy River. magic...he now judges for Xfactor france ,shame. He was actually a pianist first, drumming came second...
Has the best feel out of pretty much any drummer in my opinion... always knows exactly what to do.
its such a shame he is so underrated...he can play extremely complex stuff, but when he goes solo, he just goes with the feeling, nothing excessive, just the right notes in the right place...great drummer

But people are commenting on Manu for a reason - see the title of the video for a clue.
Of course, you have to remember that there are musicians you don't see playing also. Manu Katche is a great drummer but there are other percussionists playing as well. Check the credits for the dvd.

I've always been a fan of Mel Gaynor but this guy makes Mel look really heavy compared.
Just FANTASTIC. What he does on the second song is almost "impossible". Increases beats and almost at the end he mixes two completely different rythms.
that kind of "normal" pop/rock drumming kinda influenced me more than his (also very good) jazz works.
J'avais vu ce groupe lors de AMNESY INTERNATIONNAL SHOW ou j'avais été invité ; et j'avoue avoir été impressionné par la prestation de MANU KATCHE ,lyrisme ,beau jeux de toms ,groove très personnels (comme dans l'album "SO" de PETER GABRIEL) j'ai depuis ses début j'ai toujours apprécié son jeu de batterie. De plus actuellement, il a réussit une superbe émission de télé ! alors quoi dire sinon "bravo" MANU ! (didier-dagostino-batteur.fr) groove shuffle funk sur youtube.
Saw Manu and the Secret World tour in Orlando in 94. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
nice one. thanks for the post. i'm spewing 'red rain' wasn't on the secret world live video. he's incredible on that track. and the songs never half as good with anyone else behind the drumset.

so, Manu doesn't play with PG anymore? He was THE guy for so long.. part of what made the PG experience so special! One of my favorite drummers.
It's not that what he does it overly complicated, it's just he does it with perfect precision and sensitivity to the music, playing the right stuff at the right time.

J'étais à ce concert à Lievin en France. Je suis Manu depuis les concerts de Michel Jonasz en 85, et continue toujours de le voir en concert chaque fois que je peux avec autant de plaisir, d'admirationet d'émotion. Ce gars là a le pouvoir de sublimer la musique des autres, et en tant que Jazzman, avec ses compositions, c'est un vrai régal ! En plus, il est extrêmement sympathique !
