My Drum Teacher gave me this Video Cassette when i was 12. i've watched it ever since over 300 times and till this day i use the A Custom series and same Cymbal Setup! Thank you Manu for influencing my Drumming and style so much!
Back in the 90's, this video ( a VHS tape back then! ) changed my life. Changed the way I play, the way I construct my cymbal setup, and my accents. That "adding some color to the music" he says completely stuck with me forever!
he is so musical and so original.... kind of drummer that you listen a music for the first time and you can tell its him behind on the drums. I had the pleasure to see him live wirh Peter Gabriel.... have these memories as if it was just yesterday
A great example of musicality over technique! As a piano player and composer, Manu has a great sense of melody and rhythm. He's also got some fine and creative chops. But more than anything it's about his groove and all those taste notes he throws in between. This is from a Zildjian cymbals video from some years back. And that's Ian Croft, now editor of web mag. i-Drum.
If anyone else has seen the latest Peter Gabriel tour then Manu is the reason PG is sounding at his very best. This guy is as close to poetry as you will ever get on the drums.
Manu just shows that you don't need to go very fast or be able to play lots of deluxe fills to still be a good drummer. He keeps time without flaw and adds in smaller fills only when necessary, which is really the essence of what drumming is about.
Thanks so much for posting the full video! I had this on a VHS tape after buying a couple of Zildjan cymbals back in the early 90s. I lost the video and couldn't find it in its entirety since then.
Thank you, thank you thank you. I had this VHS tape decades ago and lost it. Came to RUclips years ago to look for it, but prior to you posting this, I guess. So great to finally see it again after all this time!
I remember a mate showing me this in 1994. There was a particularly subtle fill that I fell in love with and always wished I could hear it again.... and now I have: at 5.37,... love it
This video has many of Manu's trademark fills and variations. You could listen them on many records and live shows he did. That touch, sounds and ideas is what HIS STYLE really is.
I remember buying a pair of 13” K/Z hats back in 1994ish or 95 and the music store threw in a VHS vid of this exact presentation. I always thought my hats never sounded like the video. LoL ...
Also had this on VHS from the early '90s. I think we got it from the old Thoroughbred Music in Winter Park, FL when I purchased some Zildjian cymbals. Good memories :)
Je suis entièrement d'accord avec vous. Le jeu de Manu Katché est incroyablement fascinant - via la dernière partie : les notes fantômes sur la caisse claire, l'alternance rock ride / china + le jeu des sonorités sont remarquables.
I love this video because is from a time and from a guy that left the notes as they were placed, no protools edition bull*hit. I love hearing how is a little rushed sometimes, because he is reacting and making decisions in real time, manu always plays jazzy and in a creative way even when he plays rock or other style. You can recognize him just hearing one bar of drumming. His sound, groove and ideas are unique. And I loved hearing the first take always the best. Manu would be one of my best drummers ever.
I loved Manu's note about having his cymbals and drums "breathe"-the personification is both enthralling and academic, and makes total sense to boot. I am doing exactly that now with my own kit, as my heads are not muffled and my cymbals "float" with the help of quick-set clamps that do not screw on the threads of the cymbal holders. I love the open, big, natural sounds that I am getting from just letting my instruments be unadulterated. It's great to hear this philosophy in words and in action.
+Brent Rolland Are you using a drum ring on your snare? As a sound guy and a former drummer, I find snares produce a lot of nasty overtones, especially during live performances.
You're right! Manu is unique! Listen also to his collaborations with Jan Garbarek - "Twelve Moons", "Took up the runes" and "Visible World"! These albums are full of great and innovative grooves of this master!
I have a true love 4 splash cymbals also-they're great 4 accents & soft crashing which i do a lot of--they r my signature on the kit & they have given me my identity as a player--Im a Sabian guy now--but I still have my 6" & 8" A Splashes from my Zildjian days-they're awesome :)
Great video. Thanks for posting! FYI, I've almost always seen Manu use a K crash (and smaller straight A), and an A Ping Ride (except for some of his more recent European jazz stuff, where he'll sometimes use a lighter ride). I guess Zildjian was trying to push the 'new' A Customs when this video was made? Haha.
Manu is a great drummer, period! And the mistakes of a profesional are seldom noticed, and in fact, groove: At 5:47, thinking that the B section was coming, Manu played a fill to set it up, but the B section was several bars ahead. He noticed it, kept on, and set it up again in the right place. At around 6:43, just after he played the E.F.X cymbal, he accidentally played an "air stroke" with his right stick. Just little details that make one appreciate how professionals deal with mistakes.
Older I get the more I appreciate the subtleties of players eg manus slashes, Vinnie crashes without bass hits, Brain crashes with mutes and Gavin Harrison press rolls.

one of my all time favorite drummers. his work with Sting and Peter Gabriel is so melodic.
so is his work with Tears for Fears, listen to Bad mans song to hear an excellent performance
His work with Michel Jonasz, before Peter Gabriel, is so amazing for a few decades.
Hear him on works with Jan Garbarek many times, which is absolutely awesome.

same story here! this promotional video from Zildjian is legendary!
Sting's The Soul Cages shows how much feel and complexity Manu offered without ever overplaying.
What a player he was on that album - taaasty!

Have this on VHS from years ago. What a beautiful and colorful player....
The wonderful Yamaha Rock Tour Custom.
Best kit they ever made in my opinion. I am biased though.
I saw this video sooo many times. Very influential. I still love Manu Katche sound to this day. ❤

One of the best snare drum sounds I have ever heard.
When Manu play seems so easy...what a great drummer!!!!!
If anyone else has seen the latest Peter Gabriel tour then Manu is the reason PG is sounding at his very best. This guy is as close to poetry as you will ever get on the drums.
He's amazing.
Your comment still applies in 2023 :)

That's tasteful grooving right there, man.
Manu : la grande classe !
Quel vocabulaire, quelle inventivité, quelle technique et la musicalité en plus !!!!

Every time I look at a cymbal that is an A Custom it reminds me of Manu. Love the way he says "A Custom". Great drummer. Much Respect.

Fantastic drummer!
Manu Katche´ is amazing!
From a drummer
Wow, Manu has an amazing fat back beat! His playing is in-the-pocket with tasty fills like at 4:00. I can't stop listening to his playing.
So smooth and groovy, love all the splash accents, Manu is always in the pocket

In 1993 someone gave me this VHS as a present. Since then I watched it nearly a hundred times. It was a big influence to my drumming since then.
Thank you for This Movie!
Like to see the great Artist, in Action.
See the Flow of Manu Katché.
Good movie, For the New generation of the Drummers.
Legendary. One of my favourite and influential drummers.!
I had this on vhs Ian Croft is a great guy. There is a lot of value in this presentation
Jesus.... His work with Peter Gabriel in the album So is just epic....listen to " I hear that voice again" and will know what I am talking about.
Thanks for mentioning that one.

MANU KATCHÉ ♥️ Desde Argentina siempre dándome una vuelta por esta hermosa reliquia batera.
O mon bon Dieu, c'est vraiment magnifique!
The Edge of Sensibility.
Grazie, Manu, sei veramente un Grande!
this is the sound of earlys 90's jazz!

He’s so great!!! Best drummer ever.. love him with Peter!!!
I had this on VCR, its now April 2022. Still love ya Manu!
Yep, had it on vhs when I was about 11, also Tico Torres drumming essentials was a big influence
Bought some Zildjans years ago. This video was given to me with the purchase. I just thought I was a good drummer until I heard this dude.
A real virtuoso. He plays and treats drums as an instrument, not just drumming as most of drummers.
Manu's playing on Robbie Robertson's 1st solo album...Monster!
Absolutely!
Album name?
@@bilawallahootidrumsself titled i think..manu plays a great groove on 'Somewhere down that crazy river'
I’m not a drummer but you know when something is right . Completely natural . Very appropriate. Tasteful . You know it’s him he has a voice .
the 6" splash is soooo Manu !
I used to have this on vhs
It's the reason I don't put felts on top of my cymbals... I figure that just helps them ring alittle more
The song its very Ten Summoners Tales, album of Sting too
Yeah, but that is Colaiuta drumming.
the most influential drummer since Steve Gadd...greatest groove-mister since Andy Newmark...damn, why did I sell my Yamaha Recording Customs ?!!!
Bought my recording some 20 odd years ago. Nothing else ever again.
very important to mention harvey mason, who was just as influential as steve gadd, and a master when it comes to dynamics, groove and taste.
t'es super bon , joue c'est ce que tu sais faire le mieux
Why did Zildjian discontinue the EFX #1? Such a great sounding cymbal!
I still have the original vhs of this. I got it free when I bought my first 18” A Custom crash. Good memories and stole some licks off him👍
Great sound, fat toms, shiny splashes.
I had this VHS in the 90s and is the reason I have a collection of Splash Cymbals...
mayor influence in my playing!!!!he is just amazing!!!!!
I watched this Vhs tape hundreds of times 😅
real treasure ! thank you!
Tu es un dieu de la batterie
Smooth and grace. Thanks Manu.
Those ghost notes make it groove, awesome
Great video. Thanks for posting!

2:30... 5:02... 7:36... 11:35... Also fills @ 4:10 (32nds)... 4:20 (16ths)...
Very elegant style
Damn...his phrasing around the beat...
Très très bon batteur super mec

this is ****ing awesome
love the sound of that yamaha kit
j'adore ton jeu dégagé
Unforgettable.Thank you
Any one notice 13:14 he drops the stick on the ride.. And recovers effortlessly :)
so laid back and behind the beat yet still spot on...
Older I get the more I appreciate the subtleties of players eg manus slashes, Vinnie crashes without bass hits, Brain crashes with mutes and Gavin Harrison press rolls.
Manu Splashe
It’s like he finds/creates another layer within the melody.
Similarities between Manu & Carter B.
He gets my most under-rated drummer award.
Power • Control • Elegance 🏆
damn, this dude is smooth.
MANU KATCHÉ ♥️
1:13 - He makes a great point here about splashes. I never thought about it this way.
I had this vhs tape. Great stuff
its just fuckin crazy man lol

[4:00 ] Wow !! I didn't see that coming. 👌

Love the way you can look up the presenters nose.
What year was this vid made?
Somewhere early 90's.
Braden Mears 1992
I love Katche and Hakim.
Sizes of tom toms are 10-12" or 12-13"?.

+Vittorio Petrina Many Thanks Vittorio .
Interesting fact. It was the purchase of a mechanical click by his uncle that first got Manu into drums at the age of 5
amazing dynamics. a bit of overplaying on the splashes at times though..
I used to have this advertisement video kn vhs.
Alguno sabe el nombre de los temas ..?
Silence del primer disco de Manu llamado "About Time"
@tooldrummer I think Brann Dailor from Mastodon plays like this...
Met him yesterday. I now can say.....I had a good life
