2:42 when she jumps into the recap she so breifly plays the waltz with a viennese lilt. In high school we would play waltzes for our school with the orchestra, and I remember learning to play the dancing rhythm and learning to waltz with the first girl I ever fell for. She so expertly evokes dance, so briefly before the somber tragic end, it feels like this art was made just for me. This has to be one of the most perfectly crafted and beautiful performances I have seen.

I've been listening to this piece for 45 years; from the time that my mother played it on the piano in our home when I was 6 years old, through to scores of recorded interpretations through the years. I've heard this well known piece of Chopin played many many times. Each one being a tour-de-force and a huge effort, demonstrating colossal pianistic skills as required by Svietoslav Richter,. Yuja Wang plays this piece with effortless ease, showing that it does not need to be played at breakneck speed. And thus, you can hear the wonderful art of the sound that Frederic Chopin paints as the descending arpeggios embrace you ears. It is truly a magnificent performance. And I am in love.

Whilst I certainly enjoy classical solo piano recitals, they’ve never been my favourite. I enjoy them but have always felt I connect with and really get more engagement from listening to performances on instruments with pitch variation and whilst I do listen to piano, it just doesn’t quite move me in the same way. However, somehow, this throws that right out of the window. In all my years of listening to and playing music I don’t think I ever heard a musician with such a sublime command of dynamics and the tiny spaces between the notes.

Enchanting. That distinctive little figure in the third and fourth bar should be played hitched and dry, which she does. Bravo

The difference between this recording and the earlier one at much younger age shows a tremendous growth, especially in the interpretive / artistic arena. Ravishing is the best word to describe it.

That just flowed, beautifully. Yuja makes it her own with those little exhuberant outbursts, that kind of remind us it's a waltz. Love it.

By far the most mesmerizing and beautiful interpretation of this Chopin waltz I have ever heard. The way she highlights the base notes at 3:46 adds so much longing and melancholia…. Rubinstein did this too and other pianists too I’m sure but to me, this interpretation is simply above all others.

Liszt would win an improvise battle hands down imo. Mozart runner up. Beethoven/Bach win the prepared round. Chopin wins the raw beauty challenge.

benjamin rupert I think Bach would win the improvised round, he was able to improvise to Kings in 6 voices

What a brave interpretation - she plays with the piece without "milking" it too much, or playing it too safe. admittedly i dislike some aspects of this performance but it is a brave one nonetheless.
This reminds you that a performance should be a snippet of what came from the heart in a particular moment, no performance is ever "perfect" and should always differ to accommodate the spectrum of emotions felt in that moment in order to sound unique, authentic...

I love it. It will bear all the liberties she takes. Boldest of all, the ff return of the opening melody. This is surely the most passionate of Chopin's waltzes, and benefits from youth.

I think a few words got chopped off there. Can't remember what I meant to say, but 'exuberance' must have come into it. This is the performance of someone who seems as capable of dancing it as playing it. And if that means throwing in a bit of Viennese, so what. Compare with, for example, Kissin.
