Hey, just letting you know. The slot you used for that M.2 SSD is actually slot 3. While it is gen 5, it will take away some lanes from the GPU. Both M.2 slots 2 and 3 share lanes with the GPU. If you want the SSD to have it's own dedicated lanes (and let the 4090 have all of its available lanes), you need to use M.2_1, which is the one on the right side of the mobo with the tool-less access. It is also a 2280 form factor. The way you currently have it configured will hamper the 4090. I just built on this mobo, and made the same mistake initially.
Just watched Gamers Nexus's video about the 4090 with the PCIe 4.0 ×8 lanes, it actually performs still pretty well, just 3% slower than the full ×16 mode. Because PCIe 4.0 ×8 is the same with PCIe 3.0 ×16

Paul, if possible, please take a look at the I/O usage of the Corsair iQue Link software. If you use it to monitor the pump, temps, PSU, etc., the amount of I/O used on the USB subsystem may be shocking. As a test, try connecting numerous USB devices (e.g., high poll rate keyboard & mouse; HD webcam; headset; boom microphone) and load the system by playing some games. I'm just interested to see if you experience any USB device disconnects while loading the system.
My system is fine. I have 12 link items + 2x more Corsair node hubs for corsair tiles and strips. Corsair AIO screen, 8000hz polling / webcam / icue nexus / 240hz 1440p display. Its flawless.
I loved this so much, I'm building this exact PC only with the 5090 (when it releases) and the same 1000w evga power supply I've already got. Upgrading from a 9900k and an EVGA 3090 Hybrid. Thank you for the Parts list.
I just checked the amazon link that he provided on the RTX 4090 which I believe is around $2,000 retail. They are out and the only ones being sold start at $3,095 and go up to $3,444. Crazy.
FYI: In the slot where you installed the M.2 Storage made the PCIE x16 run at PCIE x8. Because that slots turns on the switch so the total of 16 lanes from the CPU to PCIE x16 slot and the two 4x M.2 slots gets shared bandwith. The top right M.2 slot is the only Gen5 M.2 slot without shared bandwith.
Been recently bit by the bug to build a new PC and have been doing some deep dives, I'm really glad to see you and BitWit still grinding away! Hope the fundraiser goes great! Some of my favorite RoosterTeeth content was their ExtraLife Streams.
I just built a new system with that x860e-e motherboard too! I liked the look of the ssd heat pipe as well, but found that if you use ssd2 or ssd3 ports under that heatsink you will limit your very fast graphics card to pcie x8 instead of pcie x16. Better to use ssd port 1 - the taller heatsink with quick release to the right!
Oh wow is this true? I have the same board. So using the one on the right with the quick release is better? I have an m.2 gen 4 and I’m using the lane that’s closer to the cpu (the one above where Paul Installed his)
I just built in that case last month,I did pick up the white version on sale at Micro Center. Dang it’s heavy though , however I like it. The only pain was the supplemental CPU power connecters. Definitely something to do before you rad in. Or at minimum certain rads.
I used the liquid cooler from this build with my Asus Helios build and there were some issues with software that Asus provided when I completed my build but eventually Asus fixed the bugs and I have had zero issues since. To help with strain relief on the motherboard ATX power cable I recommend using a 90 elbow adapter for plugging into the board. It also looks cleaner. Excellent build Paul!!
hi i actually have this motherboard and wanted to let you know the slot you installed the M.2 into shares lanes with the GPU. The only Gen 5 M.2 slot that doesn't share lanes is the one directly to the right of where it is currently installed. I'm unsure of the actual performance impact of splitting lanes, but I wanted to let you know.
Yeah your right m2_2 and 3 lane share but m2_1 is safe . Seems the Gen 4 spots not lane share either. Seems best way to go is a powerful Gen 5 and then 2 Gen 4s for extra storage.

Hi. If I'm not mistaken an ideal build (although maybe I'm talking about productivity, not so much gaming) would be: - M.2 gen 4 or 5 for operating system and software. - M.2. gen 5 for cache, for maximum random speed - M.2 gen 4 or 5 for active project files and assets - Sata for storage of finished jobs, etc. Isn't there any motherboard that allows this configuration without any drive taking lanes away from the GPU? Even if the loss in GPU performance is minimal, it bothers me that structurally it is not perfect! Another question: will the rtx 5090 need all lanes? Or like the 4090 it will not lose hardly any performance?

Great build. Small tweak IMO, having just built mine on same MB. For first PCIE 5 NVME use the one on the right / front (M2 slot 1). The two at the back will take PCIE lanes from the GPU slot making the GPU x8 instead (same as x16 PCIE4 bw though). Would be happy to get this PC for free!
Yes, the m.2 will be at PCIE gen 4x4 while the graphics card slot will be at PCIE gen 5x8. With any current gen graphics card, it'll run PCIE gen 4x8 though.
@Reivbv Consumer CPUs only have so many PCIE lanes. When AMD introduced X870(e) boards, the intent was for motherboard manufacturers to run the USB4 ports through the chipset, but every manufacturer has decided to use lanes that are normally reserved for a second, direct connection from the CPU to an m.2. For X670e, I know Asus split the lanes between USB4 and the second, direct m.2 and it led to issues with drive and the USB4 ports if both were utilised. The saving grace for all this is that when GPUs with PCIE gen 5 release, 8 lanes should be more than enough for even the top end GPUs since it's equivalent to Gen 4x16

Very sleek and aesthetically agreeable build, nice. Something bugging me though, at 18:42 - If I know my 3DMark, CPU over 60 degrees and about 50% utilization during a graphics test would have me investigating. And it peaked at 77? There's a spike to over 100 degrees right at the end. Not necessarily botched or anything, but I then wouldn't call the cooling config "overkill" in this case. It looks like either something was running in the background, or the 4090 _really_ lets the 9800X3D stretch its legs and just something about the cooling is off. Edit: not scientific in any way, but just for some reference - I just ran the same test with my 3090 ti and 7800X3D, scored halfway between the average and best scores, and the CPU was about at its typical *idle* temp of 35-40 degrees during both graphics tests. Also on an AIO.

I’m trying to build my first gaming pc right now and it’s pretty daunting with components availability. Can’t find the 9800x3d in stock. Only a few 4080 supers left and I’m not sure whether to buy one or wait for 5000 series just for them to be out of stock too. Lian li cases are all out of stock. It’s tough out here as a general consumer wanting a nice rig
I have the same CPU and am waiting on the new cards (5090) to come out to be on the safe side should i go with a 1200 watts PSU or highter. And which one do you recommend
I find it funny Paul That quite awhile ago I brought up an idea for a PSU like the Corsair one and let's just say that I was put down. After struggling with wiring hassles in a few cases the idea came to my mind how nice it would be to have at least a PSU that had the ports facing the rear of the case to make wiring so much easier. How about that?
Thats one overpowered and good looking build... Always love to see builds and how they end up... it was definitely a very sleek and sublte powerhouse!!!
Hey Paul I had a question for ya. I built myself a pc eairlier this year and am going to do another one in a few months. I really enjoy building PCs and putting the parts list together for them. i just recently graduated highschool and am looking for work and thought i should check to see if there was any PC building jobs around. unfortunatly most of the companies that did have those jobs aren't around or have stopped offering that. so I was wondering if you knew of any places that might have jobs for building PCs.
I'm also in the process of building a monster PC but I'm patient enough to wait yet another month for CPU and GPU updates from AMD and Nvidia, respectively.
Paul, i really think its awesome you and kyle do this all the time. Its nice to see content creators do good. Have you guys considered including Jay from Jayztwocents? It might up the viewers and donations. This is my second live charity stream that ive watched from you and kyle. Its awesome and you guys should be proud. Ill be on watching.
Been trying to understand the Asus Strix x870e board and I have yet to get a good grasp of how the lanes are shared with the M.2s and top PCIE slot from the manual. My understanding is regardless if you use one or both of the M.2 slots (M.2_2 or M.2_3) shared with the top PCIE slot, the GPU will be relegated to x8 with x4 respectively allocated to the M.2s.
Matching GPU and motherboard. Love it. So, often people shove the Asus TUF motherboard into the build then have Asus Strix GPU. It really niggles. But in this case excellent choice of parts. Brand leaders.
Current config fresh air from bottom will be pulled out the side before even being used also pulling hot air from inside through radiator to cool the cpu? Doesn’t seem correct
Your M.2 drive placement isn't in Slot 1. The slot next to it is the first slot. I have this board, and I have my boot drive under the quick-release heatsink.
I've noted that the only 870 E or non E that have 5.1 sound out is the Tuf 870 motherboard, all other uses optical out and a simple left/right and mic in. I wonder why? As if the motherboards aren't expensive enough!?

@tempforgames8806 thanks! I actually built the pc the day before yesterday. I got the 9800x3d but of course the 5090 isn't out yet. I just got a amd rx 6800 for 400 bucks to hold me over. It's way way way better than what I had already. It's going to be insane with a 5090 lmao.
This is 99% my dream build, besides the AIO, fans, and case, would go h150i LCD AIO push/pull, RX120 fans, and 5000D airflow case.
The m2 slot you used will cause your pcie gen 5 to drop to 8. Not a big deal but just saying. Use the one labeled 1 (to the right) where it does not share lanes with the gpu slot
Admirable charity work. Subscribed! Great video as well.
With the m.2 in that slot are you stealing pcie lanes from the graphics card?
no, the m.2 slots are completely separate from the PCIE x16 slot for the gpu so they won't affect anything
Isn’t optane still better for loading windows and apps/games due to the far lower access latency and seek times vs flash modules?
2nd time watching this, it's just awesome to have access to the best hardware available! Have fun in Vegas Paul!
Thank you! Really enjoyed the build!
Love this time of year. ❤. Great job 👏🏽
The fan illusion is pretty cool. Hopefully the winner showcases this rig on their desk so they can see it.
I just built the same thing, 9800x3d, X870 Hero, DDR5 8000, Corsair H170i xt, MSI RTX 4090. Runs pretty good!
I just built a 9800x3d, Asus proart X870e, 64gb GSkill Z5 6000, & an AsRock 7900 XTX , it's currently crushing everything in ultra wide for me.
"pretty good" 😅 crazy build brother!!
Can you actually run the 8000mtps ram?
Nice build! I'm running a 7800x3d, B650, 32GB ddr5 6000, Zotac Amp extreme airo 4090. Gave me the 4k experience I've been dreaming of.
@MrMcGreed Yes sir, EXPO memory. Is a G.Skill Z5 Neo 48gb kit. 8000 cl40. Plugged it right in selected EXPO and it fires right up.
Memory controller on this mobo is considered the best.
That rig looks beautiful!!!!!! I'm glad i ran across this your page!!!
Looks like a great cause to get behind! Thank you!
I went with x870e taichi with a 9800x3d, sadly had to settle for a 7900xtx, the minister of finance drew the line at 3k for a 4090
Is there a winner draw date mentioned??
Thanks, I'll try to build this but without the liquid cooling
I’ve been wanting a PC for years great video man
Magic Paul, Thank you so much for doing this for such a great cause every year. Merry Cristmas from Wales
Stunning machine, wish I could build one like that.. Ine is getting old now and starting to struggle.
man, i'm glad i went for the y70 touch infinite
I definitely prefer it over the li (my 1st choice )
great build... top-notch parts used on this one
Great video for a great cause and to top it off a dream PC. Keep doing what you do man 🤙🏼🤘🏼
Great vid man PC community is awesome this build is great
Thats one overpowered and good looking build...
Great video! Man, I'm digging the desk matt. I'll buy one pretty soon. I love the pixelated look. Cheers, Paul!
Good luck with the charity stream and kudos to you both for organusing and histing jt.....some very awesome prizes there!!!!!
Still remember my first 'how to build a PC' video was you on newegg channel. Like over 12 years ago. Now I've built like 7 PCs, lost count.
Mine was Kyle!
Love watching pauls build videos because they are so relaxing. feels like my cool older bro is showing me whats what
I'm also in the process of building a monster PC but I'm patient enough to wait yet another month for CPU and GPU updates from AMD and Nvidia, respectively.
Really nice. It will last someone a long time.
When do we get an update on the backyard?
That is one hell of a clean build, so open.
What an awesome build!!! For a good cause too!
Excellent build! I hope the fundraiser does really well, as it's a fantastic charity. Cheers!
Someone won a wicked awesome pc!!! Happy holidays to one n all🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Paul, i really think its awesome you and kyle do this all the time. Its nice to see content creators do good. Have you guys considered including Jay from Jayztwocents? It might up the viewers and donations. This is my second live charity stream that ive watched from you and kyle. Its awesome and you guys should be proud. Ill be on watching.
What do we think the general cost of this build is?
Been trying to understand the Asus Strix x870e board and I have yet to get a good grasp of how the lanes are shared with the M.2s and top PCIE slot from the manual.
My understanding is regardless if you use one or both of the M.2 slots (M.2_2 or M.2_3) shared with the top PCIE slot, the GPU will be relegated to x8 with x4 respectively allocated to the M.2s.
wow, watching this video really gives me hope on building my own computer one day.
This is Monster PC. Love the Spec combo. I hope one day i can build PC whit u Paul. Wish u Best in New Year. Salute
Matching GPU and motherboard. Love it. So, often people shove the Asus TUF motherboard into the build then have Asus Strix GPU. It really niggles. But in this case excellent choice of parts. Brand leaders.
That is great in black, fantastic build....
Wow what a clean build can't wait to upgrade mine🖱
what a fantastic Build,,,
Thanks Paul 👍👏👊
Current config fresh air from bottom will be pulled out the side before even being used also pulling hot air from inside through radiator to cool the cpu? Doesn’t seem correct
Is the 7900XTX any good of a graphics card? I’m about to build my first pc.
What a sick pc. Those scores are amazing.
I’m praying 🙏🙏 just finished finals and it would be the craziest Christmas surprise
Nice build.Good luck with Extra Life Charity Stream.
A beautiful build, awaiting one lucky owner (and yep, well done Joe for running out for those parts.. good man 😎🤘)
Your M.2 drive placement isn't in Slot 1. The slot next to it is the first slot. I have this board, and I have my boot drive under the quick-release heatsink.
Love the video! Could definitely use a new upgrade for my setup! Best of luck to everyone 🔥
I've noted that the only 870 E or non E that have 5.1 sound out is the Tuf 870 motherboard, all other uses optical out and a simple left/right and mic in. I wonder why? As if the motherboards aren't expensive enough!?
Because you just pickup a sound blaster G6 and totally piss all over what ever crap audio you get from even the best sound you can get from a motherboard because of 1 main thing... EM noise
@commanderoof4578 nah, my 12 year old 5.1 system still rocks and I have no problems on my X570 board!
MSI Carbon, MSI Godlike both do and are better.
@@CrackaSlapYa better than a sound blaster G6? Or do you mean better than most motherboards...
If you mean better than G6 your tripping balls right now
If you mean better than most other motherboard then yes but they still suck compared to a dedicated external dac
@commanderoof4578 it mean you have to spend even more money to get sound when the boards are twice the price of earlier models.
Similarly, I recently built a 5600x, 32GB, used 3070 build for my bro. Not quite what you built here, but Black Friday savings got it done for less than $500 + the used GPU I had on hand. He'll take it.
GPU pricing is still stupid.
yup. it is. Plus 90% of gamers dont even need this GPU. Most play on 1080 or 1440p and u dont need a 4090 for that. I ordered a 7900GRE to play on 1440p, wich is more then enough.
Oh my, that would be a wonderful Christmas present!!!
