  • In this video I talk about how I try and get into the conference room at some point before it fills up with guests to establish my presence and intention in the space. If you have to give a presentation, but your preparation time occurs when there are already people in the room, I find it's more difficult to take a moment to set that intention. Here I get into the conference center the night before a breakfast function, which is ideal because I'm able to test my mic, computer, and the projectors with the AV team in advance. Now I know it's all working for the morning, and I'll be able to get a good night's rest and come in fresh at the start of the day.
This is Day 14 in this playlist and series, "21 Days in the Life of a Professional Speaker"
    SERIES DESCRIPTION
I'm a professional speaker who is documenting a 21-day window leading up to the presentation of 4 corporate keynotes in a row at the end of this three-week period. I'm covering everything that is involved with preparing for the presentations themselves, as well as handling the event production details, and the travel logistics for each gig in different cities. The purpose of the series is to give aspiring speakers a backstage view of what professional speaking entails in terms of preparation and delivery.

Speaking can be lonely. Thanks for showing us how you prepare. Feels like we're doing it together, to be brought into the insider look of setting up the day before. My main takeaway is not that you are merely doing something with technical excellence, but it's your heart: your dedication to generosity and serving each person with excellence.

I'm reflecting on your statement, "speaking can be lonely." I never thought of putting it that way, but you're absolutely right. It's a curious truth, because you're in front of other people, sometimes many people, but still, you're alone. This is something to address in terms of clearly understanding one of the pain points of speaking. Thank you.

It's called a "site survey". Professionals have been doing it for decades. How do you think the TV crews know where to set up the cameras and audio equipment for any event. This is a very simplified version of the same thing. This guy's just taking longer to say it

Thanks Rick. I expect to learn a lot from pros like you who have been in the biz for a long time. Just want to share what's useful and if there are other resources out there that can get the info to an aspiring speaker with less verbosity feel free to share it. : )

Respectfully, I totally disagree. Too often, people do the site survey because they're thinking about themselves. What I see in Rick's video is a sincere, empathetic concern to serve the audience with care and generosity. That's why it connects with me.
