Despite not allowing a calculator, the MCAT still requires you to perform multi-step calculations ranging from decimals and exponents to logarithms and trigonometry.
In (this) part 1 in my MCAT Math Without A Calculator Series you’ll learn which math is required for the MCAT, and how to approach rounding when given multiple similar choices.
We’ll cover shortcuts and simplifications for multiplication with decimals and exponents, as well as how to approach pH negative log and kinematics trigonometry for quick ‘close enough’ estimates.
You’ll also learn common mistakes to avoid so that you don’t lose time and points on your Chem/Phys section.

How does 1.7x10 round to 1 instead of 2? And how does 8.3x10 round to 1x10? Really wish she explained that a bit more. I was lost at that point.

Since it was a multiple choice question, we were trying to round our answers to easier numbers like 1 or 10 in order to figure out which answer choice was closest to our estimate of 1 x 10^-5. In the end, we figured that 1.7x10^-5 rounds DOWN to 1 x 10^-5 while 8.3x10^-6 rounds UP to 1 x 10^-5.
Which answer did we choose? Well, since our estimated value was calculated by rounding UP, we knew that our actual answer should be lower than what we estimated. Making our answer D.
