perhaps a little oversimplified, but overall i thought this was a good video. even if the thesis was flawed (mainly from being too dismissive of the lasting effects of colonialism and ongoing effects of global imperialism; for example the US does a huge amount of meddling in global affairs that continues to hinder countries that its leaders wish to prevent from 'succeeding') the context from using other countries as examples was insightful, and the structure and editing was good. i felt like your talking was faster, presumably due to having a script, which made it harder for me to follow along; i would find it very helpful to include proper captions for future edited videos :)

The reason the Netherlands, Britain and France were able to undertake industrialisation processes first was because of the resources, wealth and manufacturing technologies they had accumulated through their gigantic global empires. The French Revolution occurred because the feudal aristocracy of France was impeding the capitalist industrialisation process which was blatantly possible and necessary for France at that point in time. In a different way (as is indicated in this video), the Russian and Chinese revolutions were also reactions to the inability and/or unwillingness the ruling classes in those countries to undertake industrial revolution processes.
I do not know enough about Netherlands and Frances history to say, but for Britain it's clear that industrialization would have happened even without the colonies. The combination of British industrialization and the colonies is what allowed Britain to grow into a huge empire at the time, but even without their foreign colonies they would have still been a very wealthy country albeit not as wealthy or have been a global empire as they were. Basically the way I see it is the industrial revolution is sort of like a fire while the colonies acted like extra gas to help fuel it. Though in the case of the British even without the extra gas from the colonies they would still be a large fire just not the record breaking fire that the British empire became. This is also why we can see that there are many countries where even though they lacked colonies or their colonies had negligible impact yet they are also still highly wealthy anyways. Basically it’s what you would suspect: colonies provided additional resources which allow for additional wealth but many countries even without foreign resources are still able to become wealthy proportional to their countries own resources. Since many of these wealthy countries also have many resources of their own at home I would say it’s clear they can become wealthy even without colonies just not as wealthy as when being boosted by foreign resources.
@@precisiongaming8776 I don't see the logic there. You could say that a lot of countries would have been able to industrialise, but there is a direct correlation between the transfer of textile manufacturing capacities from Northern India to England through the British East India Company and Britain's industrial revolution, which again was the first in the world. The mercantile capitalism developed through the British and Dutch empires was a necessary prerequisite for developing necessary trading capacities for those countries to industrialise.
@@azazelazel What enabled the industrialization of countries is the technological and scientific developments of the time while clearly aided by colonization crediting colonization for being the driving factor is an exaggeration. This is why countries like India and many others had not industrialized until later on, usually being industrialized via bringing in foreign technologies and expertise to build industrial equipment. This industrial equipment greatly increased the amount of work that could be done thus leading to an explosion in demand for resources like India’s wool and silk. Thus we see India's well respected high end handmade textiles being swamped by industrial mass production. “During this revolution, the European industry started mimicking the cloth and prints of Indian textiles, which actually flooded markets. Cheap machines, fast fashion, quick mass production, and an easy-approach made competition tough for slow & meticulous Indian handloom weaving.” “The unbalanced and lopsided growth structures were a legacy of British rule in India. In 1850-55, the first cotton mill, jute mill, and coal mine were established. By the end of the 19th century, 194 cotton mills and 36 jute mills were located in the western part of the country (Maharashtra and Gujarat).” What the Indian textile market provided for the industrial revolution was that textile manufacturing was something that machines could easily and efficiently increase production of. Thus it certainly played a role in the industrial revolution as it provided a source of demand for industrial producible goods which increased the demand for industrialization in Britain and the wider world. But even without having the Indian textile industry or any other colony based industries Britain still had great reason to pursue industrialization, well likely not as quick Britain still would have had many sources for industrial demands even without its colonies providing additional industrial opportunities for Britain. Basically there is zero reason for Britain not to make the industrial jump given they had the knowledge, technology, the drive and the resources. “During the first half of the 14th century coal began to be used for domestic heating in coal producing areas of Britain, as improvements were made in the design of domestic hearths.” “The demand for coal steadily increased in Britain during the 15th century, but it was still mainly being used in the mining districts, in coastal towns or being exported to continental Europe. However, by the middle of the 16th century supplies of wood were beginning to fail in Britain and the use of coal as a domestic fuel rapidly expanded.”, ”The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the 18th century, and later spread to continental Europe, North America, and Japan, was based on the availability of coal to power steam engines. International trade expanded exponentially when coal-fed steam engines were built for the railways and steamships during the Victorian era. Coal was cheaper and much more efficient than wood fuel in most steam engines.” Britain's colonial history certainly played a major role, but I think based on the evidence it’s pretty clear that Britain still would have industrialized eventually. I mean for Britain just to travel to places like India and win conflicts in the first place shows a fair bit of their technological and scientific developments which enabled them to colonize these places in the first place. Yes, you don’t need to have a colonial empire for your country to develop and get rich. But you can’t just neglect that European colonialism helped these countries get more capital to industrialize, and gave them a much bigger market to sell their products to and monopolize

I wrote a book long reply and decided not to post it. Tl;dr - saying "liberal college kids think imperialism is at fault. Haha it is not" is not an argument. Neither of us have the authority to claim the other wrong, but dismissing an idea without further thought seems a little disingenous. The entire "industrialization is what made us rich, not the theft and crime" is a blatant falsehood. The reason that global capitalist free market economies do not allow for escape from the lower income brackets is imperialism and neo collonialism. If you choose to not want to believe it, that choice is yours. You come to very close to making a good point and then make a complete 180. The research put into this video is not great. Some interesting statistics, like the one about individual class mobility within a population. Pull yourself by the bootstraps or whatever they say, while abusing the unequal exchange of labor value. Whatever whatever. This video reads like a slightly too far right propaganda for my taste. Either way. The bitterness from the begining of the video just seems off. Yes, you don’t need to have a colonial empire for your country to develop and get rich. But you can’t just neglect that European colonialism helped these countries get more capital to industrialize, and gave them a much bigger market to sell their products to and monopolize
Rather than enriching Europe, unequal exchange kept the others down. European countries thai never colonized became wealthy because they could trade with colonial powers without being colonized themselves. Unequal exchange is still very much real

The thing about China is that its been the leading the world in technology for Melennia, and only hasn't been doing so since the industrial revelution. I think China will be able to escape the middle income trap pretty easily.

Idk if that is how it was intended to be seen but oh well. I implore you to investigate why you feel the way that you do. I know you are british, it isnt easy, be strong king!
good god, a liberal. stop throwing your trash on public areas and lose some weight. after that, maybe we can talk about what you can do about the big oil companies etc.

INCORRECT.
Spain NEVER had empires. The lands it was in were considered part of Spain and those citizens had equal status. The natives were not destroyed and investment was made by Spain in those areas, hence it NEVER plundered.
Maybe you should study a bit more and stop promoting black legend, which is false.
Google encomienda system
We should stop celebrating genocidal empires and this why
Just look at the number of natives before and after the conquest of New Spain. I think it is fair to say they were destroyed.
@@GavinLepley New Spain came into British hands, they destroyed it. Under Spain, the natives were plentiful, they never charged $1 per scalp like the British/US did.
Some estimates say that 80% died out upon Spanish colonization, mostly of disease.
