yea, i became depressed, cuz the title isn't this video
I became more and more dissatisfied with my country the longer I went into this video (because of the likeness of Richland and my country - in fact, they're almost identical!). Though, what I took from it was that if you are conscious about these factors you can work against them, and live the good life (defined by YOU, and not those around you).
- Be satisfied with what you have - don't strive for material goods.
- Try to live a good life - not the good life defined by those around you. (Yeah, I repeated it!)
- Stop competing with your co-workers, and try to find a healthy job environment.
- Don't define yourself by your grades, your title or your work performance or similar - find something that matters to YOU!
-Don't work your ass off and go on vacations - you can get by without the expensive car (swapped out every two years) and the enormous house - yeah, your friends, neighbors and co-workers will define you by these things, but why should you care? And secondly, if you lose your job or go broke, it's usually not that big of a deal (compared to some guy in Sudan going broke)
- Don't follow the news - it's a waste of time and detrimental to your mental health (just google "why you should stop reading the news, and you'll have tons of good arguments).
- Lastly, spend time and love your kids and your family and (good) friends, and stop caring about what others think about you.

🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. We can not separate anything from everything. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all.
People are controlled by system why?
The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are in the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more.
Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk. The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. Money is a very controlling entity of you let it do so, and yes it did escalate quickly. One time it was “oh this is how to get rich” and then “being rich also makes you question your own sanity!”
To be honest, this sounds a lot like South Korea. The pressure to succeed, high suicide rate, hyper consumerism and materialism. Also, it is one of the most capitalistic countries in Asia.

Growing up as an autistic child those words hit different. I remember as a child when parents would discourage their children from playing with me in the name of "you might also become as dumb as he is in academics". I lost my best friend and I had to grow up without friends and worst of it all teachers also used to discourage kids from playing with me. If I knew what suicide was back when I was a child I'm afraid I wouldn't be here today

I thought the people of rich land don't go on holiday but then a few seconds later we learn that they go on expensive holidays several times a year. This country is confusing but reminds me of The Lego Movie.

How many jobs do you think Henry Ford, Bill Gates or Walt Disney created? Where would we be if we didn't have cheap cars or cheap personal computers?
That is not how to make a country rich. This is one-sided criticism of the modern world at best.
In a truly rich country people would first of all be aware of the fact that they are actually much less successful in their careers if they let anxiety and negativity rule, and secondly they would place value on much more important things than merely how famous someone is or how much money someone makes.
+PoisonHeadcrab Not sure I understand the goal of this video. Is it just to show that the goal of more wealth alone is useless ? It's all about balance. The UN report on World Happiness says: "Happy people live longer, are more productive, earn more, and are also better citizens. Well-being should be developed both for its own sake and for its side-effects."
Looking at the report, lots of wealthy countries at the top where state provides for you in case of problems (illness, death of a breadwinner, etc.). Countries like Norway or Switzerland. What is interesting is Costa Rica is also ranked very high, even though it's less rich. But it's one of the greenest countries in the world and one of a few countries without an army. It ranks very high on topics like human development and equality in comparison to income. Also has a good history on political stability. The sun shines throughout the year.

I don't understand the point of this video entirely either.
Money is certainly not everything and there are a lot of things that can go wrong if either a person or a country as a whole tries to pursue short term wealth at the cost of everything else.
However if we were to imagine a country that is "better" and has happier and more fulfilled citizens, more than any country currently on this planet, then that country would be VERY rich.
Wealth consists of two parts, first having a lot of money and secondly, the part this video COMPLETELY ignores, USING this money wisely.
Why would a country want to be rich? It would want to be rich so it could provide more to it's citizens. So it's citizens would have better education, social services and support from the government, so they could work what they want and as much or as little as they want.
However when you have such a toxic culture as depicted in the video, the people and the country might all make lots of money, but all that money goes to fancy cars and clothes instead of education, health and well-being.
If the money is used right however, then a rich country would also be the best, and happiest country. Period.
+PoisonHeadcrab Well not really, i would argue that richland's citizen can be rich while being ruled by anxiety and negativity. Afterall both feelings are just love, just on the other side of the spectrum, towards who? towards yourself. Just replace negativity and anxiety with love and youll get it. . Its what drives people to take that one step. Its alarming depressing rates are balanced out by the indulgence rate. THus the creativity, production rate evens out even maybe outperform the model of kindness and security.

Put it simply, anxiety, negativity, competitiveness, envy arent really that different from security, positive thinking, joy, and sharing. Its just the other side of the spectrum, the left ones is loving yourself and the other side is sharing your love.

Richland pushes its people to be as rational as possible, as little spiritual as possible since its what makes people took unpredictable action which may or may not result in the act of produce and all was retributed by the high indulgence of instincts.

What they mean is that they fly away for all their vacations, so that the twice or thrice a year they do take admittedly brief vacations they go far away.
When the mid-level and higher level employees "holiday" they take their work with them in physical or electronic form for fear of falling behind or being seen as not committed to their job or career.
That reputation can damage their chances of progressing upwards in the company.
Nobody is genuinely taking a holiday from work if they're still doing work related activities everytime they are "away on holiday".
Granted the holiday references did seem like a contradiction in the video and could have been explained with more clarity but as someone who's worked in those environments I'm hoping that I've correctly understood and conveyed the drift of what they were attempting to say.

That's the whole truth
point number 10, that whole "winner" and "loser" concept is one we really need to remove from our society. I work as a psychologist and i see it all the time. People who are jobless/homeless, people who have never had a relationship, people who don't have a lot of friends. We judge them as losers all the time and make them feel even worse, even laughing at their sorrows. My wife is American but her roots are in a tine 3rd world African nation (sao tome e Principe). Even though they are poor they have a sense of community, they don't judge, they pull each other up. Here in the so called developed world we have such high and quite frankly "basic" expectations of how we should live that we just isolate everyone who doesn't quite make it or fit these categories. We have all the buildings and cars but no togetherness, no love. I really wanna leave this country one day.
The problem is without the winner loser concept you get a generation of lazy people, like my generation. I might not be the hardest worker but at least when I don't succeed I blame myself, too often people want to blame society for their lack of success when really its just their own fault.

The issue with the winner/looser concept is, that it pretends, that everybody can be a winner, if they just work and try hard enough and that can't be.
Same with the "American dream".... "Everybody can be wealthy if they try and work hard" just doesn't work... it us impossible!
So most will be losers and there is nothing we can do about it. (Of course an individual could try harder and become a winner, but while doing so he turns someone else who works a little less or has a little less luck into a looser)
Even the "looser" can be a productive part of society, but with to much pressure to become a winner (something they will never achieve) they might break, shoot up a school or take their own life and damage the society!
Jakob Schulze The winner loser concept isn't meant to be a guarantee of you being a winner but it is something you have to work towards. Of course everyone can't be winners, life isn't like that, the winner loser is an incentive not a guarantee of success.
+Raisin Toast what's the point of having an incentive that a significant proportion of the population will never reach. what's worse is that they are expected to reach this goal or deemed "losers". when you see someone who has never been to college, or still living with his parents, or is still a virgin, you immediately isolate them. I know maybe you have your life in order but believe me when I say there is no worse feeling than being an outcast of society, I've seen "failures" with my own two eyes, our society is not nice.
As the video says, the winners benefit while the losers cry and commit suicide.

Everybody can have a positive impact on society, even if he himself isn't one of the winners!
Do you really wanna promote a system, which by default makes most ppl losers and like the comment you referred to said, has serious negative psychological consequences on some of those ppl.
The ppl in western society are getting more and more unhappy, take drugs to "perform" better, etc. many of those losers turn into outcasts and aren't part of the regular society anymore.
Some of them seek attention or some kind of fame/recognition and start shooting up a school or jump out of the next window.
I generally have liked most of the videos on "The School of Life". This is a one-sided criticism and lacks the educational value some of the other videos contain. This is an opinion piece at best.

For the 17 years of my life have been more diverse than a college diversity department. Certainly this is a good philosophical question, to which there may never be an answer to. Why did you disable comments and ratings on your 'Why some countries are poor and others rich' video? It reflects worse on you than bad comments. Not only does censoring criticism make you look weak but I can't even look at the criticism to see how much I agree and disagree with so I wonder if perhaps the whole video is just false.
The comments became infiltrated by fights between an alt-right agitation movement and marxists. It grew very ugly and it seemed wisest to shut things down. If, however, you have things to tell us, please free to do so here.
I just came from that video, and although you raised some good points even those weren't explored fully. Also how could you miss out colonalisation?? You can't talk about world poverty and exclude it. You also missed out the cotinued interference from Western countries and slavery. The whole video had a very Eurocentric outlook to it. Corn, yam and cassava are carbohydrate rich foods from the tropics?
They should have brought up colonalisation, but it is far less important than you would think,problems of poor countries in middle east and Africa stem primary from bad politics, institutions and culture not because british or french ruled them 70 years ago.
Imperialism and colonialism actively created systems that exploited and continue to exploit as well as promote corruption. This is also is a huge factor in why they are rich. I think it's far more important than you think.
Britain and France continue to be very rich countries even though they do not have colonies for last 50 years ,USA never had colonies and it is one of the richest countries in the world,this idea that everything wrong with poor countries is result of west and capitalism is laughable.

There's always a balanced way to life. This is a theoretical video of how to maximize one thing, wealth. When in reality, there is a lot more to life and most people don't only prioritize wealth.

In first world countries in the other hand, you can have a good life with an humble job.
In Islam there's this thing called zakat where everyone is obligated to give percentage of their wealth every year. If everyone does this it will boost the countries up.also manage inflation rate and focus on long term growth.

In response, people again set their goals on having their material existence: you have money - you have influence - you are safe.

I previously taught English to students from Korea and Japan which one could consider as "rich" countries. Based on what my students told me about what life is like in those countries, the definitions/descriptions put forth in this video fit those countries.

If that video is real, why is it that Qatar, a muslim nation has the highest GDP per capita of between $130-145k per year? Then after that you have Luxembourg which is a Monarchy, followed by countries like Norway that are socialist countries.
What's funny is the countries that follow the kinds of behaviours described don't even make the top 10 list (aside from the US). If you really want to know what makes a country rich, a well managed government + oil/natural gases = riches.

1.) Are you saying that countries like Japan and Korea are not rich countries?

In Qatar, only a small percentage are actually citizens. Most people are foreign migrant workers, many of whom are badly mistreated. Qatar also has a vast abundance of natural oil wealth, skewing the game.
Luxembourg fits exactly into the mold described in the video (I should know, I live there), as do the Scandinavian ones (I should know, I've visited them). They are democratic nations with high suicide rates, high productivity and demanding cultures of success. Just because they have a social safety net to prevent people from falling too far doesn't negate these "cultural factors".
Norway and the other scandinavion countries are not socialist. I don't know why so many people seem to believe this, the truth is that they are capitalist just like the rest of Europe, just with slighly more welfare and social security. At the same time I was simply trying to say that having a country that is a combination of being socialistic and competitive is ideal, because it drives materialism as a result of competition moreso than allowing companies to get too big to fail and then hoard their resources. Obviously it’s important to have a balance, but different people find meaning and motivation in different things. There has never been a better time to be alive for more people thanks to capitalism. When I was young I was very poor. I was still poor when I was in my 20s but at least I could pay rent and had a car. Now I am 50 and if my wife and I sell the house, We would be in the 1% bracket for that tax season And be dealt with viciously. Our one chance to get ahead and we Will be vilified by the Left.
You tell us nothing about your mental state - are you happier now than when you had nothing ? Someone who had 'made it' once said 'I got to the top and found there was nothing there'. Like the rest of us you will get old, get sick suffer bereavement - your money won't help you with these things. You'll turn on your expensive TV and watch wars, environmental destruction and innumerable horrors - you will shrug your shoulders but these things impinge on your consciousness just as they impinge on us all. It's true capitalism has raised living standards around the world - but at the cost of massive environmental degradation. Also their societies now suffer from the same crises of mental and physical health that blight our own - drug addiction, alcoholism depression suicide, obesity, strokes, heart attacks. The 'left' ,it is true have no answers to any of this - their own 'model societies' collapsed long ago and were utter failures. However acquiring ever greater amounts of 'stuff' and congratulating ourselves on our success' seems to me nothing more than being miserable in comfort.
Yes, I'm happier. Not rich at all and will have to work till I die. I've learned that there are men out there older than me who could retire but choose to work and so i'm ok with it. This is why we need small applications of socialism in our capitalist society. We need to establish a baseline such that, while those who work their asses off to get ahead and become rich, the those who do not make it or are considered poor still have access to the basic necessities of life. We need to create a society where the lowest standard of living is still "okay" or "not terrible", such that no one suffers, yet those at the bottom still have motivation to escape their situation and climb the ladder.
I wouldn't consider myself the most educated in terms of law and policy making, but I do think we need more brave individuals from the prospering, first world countries to go out and help underdeveloped countries not only increase their GDP per capita, but also educate the peoples of such countries to implement policies that allow the nation's wealth to be used effectively to increase the standard of living for all, rather than only the rich.
Side note: The U.S. should financially support more educational programs dedicated to international development studies. The U.S. government doesn't have the money to save every struggling country, but millions of inspired and hardworking citizens might have the power to do so. Then, the U.S. wouldn't have to worry about the possible immigration of criminals from countries plagued by poverty.
I know that plenty of people think negative about wealthy countries and their values, but this video hits a level of cynicism that makes me wonder whether it´s supposed to make you think about western values, or if it´s just a parody on how anti capitalists think.
This video makes me sad :( the future is dark and mysterious for young individuals so let's all hope for the best.

@B Sandstorm It's spot on, while things are bad, but they used to be worse, while some regions might be quite unstable, our world has steadily progressed overall (atleast until 2019).
The most important thing is to remember that we, as humans are inherently imperfect and that we can't possibly create a "perfect world order". But we _can_ keep a reasonably flexible mindset and we can always try to improve the things, while obviously keeping in mind that we can't make anything perfect and that someone else can easily improve upon our work in the future.

My generation also has a high suicide rate. When my dad was a kid people did not have any issues going into professions that pay decent but is hard labor. I think we're supposed to see that the most "ideal" country western culture has taught us to imagine sounds awful when you're not blinded by the next iPhone or worrying about not losing your job and thusly your personal identity. The work force is seen as fuses who will eventually burn out. The only consequence of this is that you have to change the fuse, hire someone else.
I love the reality of this. And instead of throwing away the idea of Richland because of the downside, why not focus on everyone's ability to make their own choices to balance their lives. Incorporate spirituality, nature, and family centers into the architecture and landscape. Bring in philanthropists to build cultural landmarks just like New York has. Andrew Pestano it's not only the US, countries like china do it through subsidizing their companies so they can undercut american companies prices (steel is a good example). the EU does this through their argiculture subsidies and food storaging as well to the point where their milk products are competitive in africa and undercut their prices, so much a farmer in europe will get less paid for a liter of milk than farmers in cameron.
