What is In-Vivo coding in qualitative analysis?

- In-Vivo coding can be defined as a method of qualitative analysis that uses the respondent or participant's own words to summarise the data. We'll show different ways to apply in-vivo coding, using it as part of grounded theory, and discuss the differences between discourse analysis. Not to be confused with NVivo software!
There's also a blog post covering In Vivo coding at:

You can download a free trial of the simple qualitative analysis software Quirkos, shown in the tutorial from:

Showing how to do in-vivo coding using paper, spreadsheets, or qualitative data analysis software.
Thanks in a million. Great content. Awesome. Very well explained. I couldn't find this explanation--simply put anywhere else. Great teachers are hard to find. Grade: A++💥
Yes we are using a book by him. This is some good information. Thank you
Thanks a lot, this video literally opened my eyes. brief to the point.
You did a great job explaining this! Thanks for your expertise.
Thank you so much for this video. This is a very clear explanation. :)
This was quite helpful. Thank you.
Thank you this was very helpful as I was doing an annotated bibliography on various qualitative studies :)
so helpful! thanks so much!
Thank you!!! its helps a lot:)
Glad it helps!
Thank you, it helped me :)
So glad to hear that!
Good video
Thank you for this video. I am trying to learn how to do GTM using Quirkos. Would you recommend doing In-Vivo with Memos and higher-level coding with Quirks? I think my project needs both levels of analysis.
Absolutely, it's designed so that once you've done IPA/GTM etc using memos, you can click on a memo and drag the text associated with it onto a Quirk to code it (or straight on to the (+) button to add a new Quirk)
@@Quirkos So in fact, coding is done via memos and higher-level categorization via quirks? Or both using quirks? I am confused as how to use the tool properly.
There is no prescriptive way to use it, it depends on approach. IPA/Line-by-line/In-Vivo and many grounded theory approaches will create a unique description for each line. Then these may be coded later using the Quirks
@@Quirkos Thank you!
