All of the Irish soda bread recipes I’ve seen have tons of sugar and raisins. this is more like what I expected Irish soda bread is made. Thank you for the videos.
I just made this, i think i needed to leave it in the oven a little longer but the pair of us ate the whole thing in one go, with the obligatory ton of butter!
First time have made bread was this morning - thanks a mil for this! I felt like the spirit of generations of Irish mammies and grannies were channeling through me
Just stumbled across you, I've been making soda bread since the I was young. I smiled at your enthusiasm and banter. I'll go and check out your order recipes 😉
I brought a bag of Irish wholemeal back from Ireland after making lousy brown bread properly. Pastry flour is what you want in the US, it's lower in gluten than all purpose. I've had great results using it and you can reconstitute whole meal by adding the bran and germ back. 80g PF, 17g Bran and 3g germ is the ratio. We have a local dairy that makes a whole milk buttermilk, much better than what you get in a supermarket.
Thank you so much for watching, I will be doing a brown soda bread video soon, That’s fantastic you got a great mix by doing it yourself, also you can’t beat dairy products straight for a farm. Rob
I just found u n I love the content, I wanna make the same bread and surprised my family tomorrow thank u for showing me this recipe looking for new recipes in the future thanks
oh this sounds absolutely divine. I'll have to make some! thank you for the video and I"ll have to check out your other videos too! and do you plan on sharing other traditional Irish recipes?
Hi and thank for watching, most people in Ireland use a actual teaspoon not the measuring spoon so that’s the difference, 1/2 a measuring tsp for both salt & bread soda or bicarbonate soda Rob
New to your channel. I’ve had soda bread once, but you make sound so much better than what I ate many, many moons ago. I will give this a try. Perhaps my 1% Irish heritage will really, really love it as much as you do. Thanks for the recipe!🙋🏾
Hi Robert, guess who popped up as I’m looking for an Irish soda bread recipe to make for my granddaughter?😅😆thanks will let you know how it turned out😃💙 love to Donna and babies💕💙
Yes pastry/cake flour it is lower in gluten than all purpose. Bread flour is higher than all purpose in the US. I never use all purpose for bread, it is too high for soda bread and too low for my sourdough.
G'day from Australia! I have to say I'm SO happy you it in the weights for this recipe! 1 Aussie metric cup of flour weighs 150g! So is have been trying to make this head with a REALLY incorrect ratio of dry to wet! 😍 EDIT: k, more I'm REALLY confused... How many ml are in an Irish teaspoon?. How does it suffer from an American teaspoon? 🫢
@@josephineholohan7350 a standard American teaspoon is 4.9ml, no near enough for single teaspoon measures. Real differences come in TABLEspoons... One Australian standard/metric TB = 4x TSP = 20ml, whereas 1x American TB = 3x American tsp = 14.8ml
Definitely an interesting quick bake bread recipe but where you had me completely mesmerized was the sheer volume of butter on that test slice. Are you secretly french?
Hahaha Bonjour Patrick no I’m definitely 100% Irish, i always remember a block of butter on my grandparents table and they used to cut it like cheese and put it into the bread when it was still hot, it’s just fantastic
Okay, so can you use baking powder instead of baking soda? There's an Irish woman that used Baking Powder. Thanks for your help. I reposted my comment because there's some people stalking me on here and exposing my personal information.
@@RobertKelly-simplecooking it’s brilliant, although personally I prefer half wholesome half white flour mix. It’s mad how literally everybody makes it slightly different from home to home. Nobody has ever made it better than my grandmother up to now for me!
Hahahaha I got to the introduction and then looked in the notes for the written recipe. Love that you added an American recipe, hahaha, but I have converted to the grams way of measuring now because of a UK bread maker via RUclips, BakeWithJack. i only weigh out my ingredients now ❤
All of the Irish soda bread recipes I’ve seen have tons of sugar and raisins. this is more like what I expected Irish soda bread is made. Thank you for the videos.
Thank you very much for watching. Rob
I just made this, i think i needed to leave it in the oven a little longer but the pair of us ate the whole thing in one go, with the obligatory ton of butter!
Aw fantastic, every oven is different, some can be more time some can be less, but the main thing is you had a TON of butter on it 😁
Rob

@Kelly-simplecooking just made this bread and it came out delicious. I will absolutely be making this again in the future.
That’s fantastic I’m so happy to hear that 🤘🏼😎
How long does oven have to be on before bread goes in , and how high ?
Is an Irish tsp smaller than a U. S. tsp? What’s the weight of salt and soda?
Hi and thank for watching, most people in Ireland use a actual teaspoon not the measuring spoon so that’s the difference, 1/2 a measuring tsp for both salt & bread soda or bicarbonate soda

@@RobertKelly-simplecooking Thanks for the info
No problem hope it help
That was my question too. Unfortunately it led to me not adding enough salt and baking soda. My teaspoons equal a measured teaspoon😢

Can you show us how to make soda farls ?
What kind of flour, bread flour or cake flour? (We don't have all-purpose flour in our country). Is pastry flour the same as cake flour?
Yes pastry/cake flour it is lower in gluten than all purpose. Bread flour is higher than all purpose in the US. I never use all purpose for bread, it is too high for soda bread and too low for my sourdough.

An Irish teaspoon is 5ml which I think is an American half teaspoon

Great recipe and video, could have done with more butter on the bread though😀
Hahahahahaha you can never have enough butter on it, thank you so much for watching.

Doesn’t the soda bread use soda or beer?
I now add an egg to make it lighter, my son goes crazy and says, !Will you just do it how you use to without the egg for gods sake"!
Your son knows what he’s talking about 😁😁 thank you so much for watching, Rob
The center of my loaf is soggy and doughy can you tell me why?
Sound like your oven was too hot.or cold. Our oven in Ireland we go by Celsius if you are in America it's normally in fahrenheit . Hope it helps.
👍👍😍😍😍

Where's the butter? I love the raisin soda bread too.
It’s spread over ever slice, thanks for watching

Looks like it needed longer in the oven. Doughy inside.
No it was perfect timing, I did cut it to soon from the oven because I had a lot on that day and had to get it finished up, thanks for watching, Rob
