When they go to that raw minor key progression it only makes the melodic portion with the strings sweeter. A personal fav from them

Nice reaction. The instruments in the mechanical sounding part is mimicking the girls insanity. React to "Get Born Again" Highly overlooked because it didnt come out on a lp until the AIC's best of.

Has she heard "Confusion" or "Sunshine"? I think she would LOVE those songs. It really showcases layne's voice while still having a solid instrumental.

People like to talk about how grunge doesn’t have guitar solos. While some don’t, Alice In Chains has some of the best.

I STAY AWAY is the second single from Jar of Flies.
In the liner notes of the Music Bank, Jerry Cantrell said this about the song: "That was the first time we’d written with (bass player) Mike Inez, which makes this another special song. The whole Jar of Flies EP proved to both us and the fans what a talented and valid part of the band Mike was. He plays the nastiest, darkest shit but he’s got the sweetest heart in the world."
The song is also known for its music video, done completely in claymation by Nick Donkin. The video shows a male teen with a jar of flies at a carnival, in which he releases the flies which cause deadly situations at the carnival.
The single reached No. 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks, and stayed in the chart for 26 weeks. "I STAY AWAY" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1995.
I STAY AWAY also uses a great deal of instrumentation that Alice in Chains had previously not attempted, including string instruments. It also effectively demonstrates the harmony between vocalist Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell. The violins used in the song... Jerry did NOT have sheet music for it. He went into the room with the violinists and showed them what he wanted them to play by playing the piece on his guitar.
The recording process was a bit different from their first album Facelift. The band came home from being on tour for nearly three years on/off, found out that SOMEONE forgot to set up an automatic bill pay situation, and were kicked out of the band house they were renting for late rent. So they moved into the recording studio. Jerry had called engineer/producer Toby Wright from the road and asked if he'd be willing to do an EP with them. Toby said, "Yeah, sure." When Jerry showed up, Toby asked, "so where are the songs?" Jerry said, "About that... there aren't any. Can we hold up here and work?" So they spent 7 days living and working in a studio. Jerry, Mike Inez, and Sean would do the music, and then Layne would take it, lock himself in a room and write a song to the music. So whenever you see Layne as writer or co-writer on a Jar of Flies song... it was because he locked himself in a room and wrote his part of the lyrics.
Layne still had a drug addiction he was dealing with but it wasn't getting in the way of the music. By the time they got to recording Tripod, Layne's drug addiction was worse, but not as bad as it was by the time they did Unplugged in 1996 (recorded April 10, 1996 and premiered in May 1996. They did a couple of TV spots and then they opened for KISS for four of six concert dates between June-July 1996. Layne survived an overdose after the last concert on July 3, 1996 at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. After that, it was a six-year-long slow suicide. Layne's former fiancee Demri Parrot (pronounced PER-ROH) died in October 1996 and that sent him into a drug-induced tailspin. When she died, Layne took his addiction to lengths no one could imagine or sustain.
Layne Staley is better live than studio version. There are very few singers who are better live and he's one of the few. Layne's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals. (He started losing his teeth to grinding around 1995.)
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne's vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
Layne was so much more than his drug addiction. He was able to come up with lyrics and harmonies off the top of his head. He knew that Jerry Cantrell was playing with the wrong people and gave him contact info for Sean Kinney and Mike Starr. He wrote the lyrics for the original songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album and drew the cover art for that album. Layne was a genius in his own right. He stacked his own vocals with melodies and harmonies underneath. He was able to figure things out in a snap off the top of his head. Layne just had his demons. At the age of 34, he looked more like an 80 year old man. He knew he screwed up, between the drugs and his own depression and then his former fiancee dying, Layne just couldn't find a way to dig himself out of his own mess and at the end with his teeth problems and organs failing on him, he gave up trying. He lost sight of who his true friends were and who was using him. He was never going to give up the drugs. Instead, he tried to attain the same high he felt the first time he did drugs and could never achieve it.
He was on this earth for 34 years. In that time he wrote songs that gave a normal person insight into the mind and journey of an addict. The pain and depression he endured to write the most brutally honest lyrics a musician could write concerning his feelings on his own addiction, his depression, and his tumultuous relationship with Demri. The emotional and physical strength he had to perform those songs live when all he wanted to do was curl away and lose himself in the drug haze I can’t imagine what it was like for him. He was hounded by the press about his addiction. He was ridiculed for his addiction. The music industry blackballed him for his addiction. The Grammys forgot about him when he died. As far as MTV and Rolling Stone magazine were concerned he’s just another addicted singer. They don’t want to acknowledge his contributions to music.
I could say so much more, but in the end, it all boils down to: Layne Staley deserved better than what he received from the people around him who he thought mattered. He wrote about things with maturity and knowledge well beyond his years. He didn’t deserve to be turned into tabloid cannon fodder by the press.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12 year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne kept his humor and wit even to the end of his life.
"Whatever dramas are going on in my life, I always find that place inside my head where I see myself as the cleanest, tallest, strongest, wisest person that I can be." -- Layne Staley
"My bad habits aren't my title. My strengths and my talent are my title." -- Layne Staley
"When I tried drugs they were fucking great, and they worked for me for years, and now they're turning against me - and now I'm walking through hell and this sucks. I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them. I didn't want my fans to think heroin was cool. But then I've had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they're high. That's exactly what I didn't want to happen." -- Layne Staley
"I'm not into religion, but I have a good grasp on my spirituality. I just believe that I'm not the greatest power on this earth. I didn’t create myself, because I would have done a hell of a better job." ~ Layne Staley
