  • In this tutorial video I show in detail how to use a trim saw to cut cabochon preforms from a slab of stone. A cabochon is the final polished piece, and you have to cut your preform before using a cabbing machine to grind and polishing your stone to a brilliant finish.
    A crucial process for anyone who is interested in lapidary!
    Check out my previous video for a tutorial on cutting the slab, and stay tuned for the next one on how to polish and finish your cabochon.

    Thank you so much for being clear, and actually TEACHING via your videos instead of “mansplaining” for the “stupid.” You’re fantastic in both your content and your manner. Keep up the brilliant work!

    Love your playing cards for auditioning shapes! I do a similar thing using the flat sides of milk cartons to cut out shapes I plan to repeat. I just transfer my original paper design over with a fine line sharpie. You can use the cutout to trace around or the other part like a template as well. I like your playing cards as they would be easy to store all nice and stacked. My bits and pieces go in a zip lock - all wonky. Thanks for the tip!❤

      Could you please help me. i've just purchased a Lortone LU6X-130 combination unit. This is my 1st time trying to do my own cutting & cabbing. I bought it used for under $400, but i need a new saw blade. please give me a suggestion there are so many to choose from. Also, I have what looks like a stone grinding wheel & a rubber belt over a plastic disk. As i said b4 ,i'm a complete noob to this. I'm just realizing that i need at least 6 different grits to get a great polish could you make some suggestions that i could do to still use my unit efficiently w/o spending $300 on wheels. And last, I have a beautiful piece of Ocean jasper rough ,but its 6"/6" wat to bit for my trim blade. Any idea on how i could slab it for trimming? Thanks for the help.

      I don't think i'll be much help without actually seeing what all you're working with and such, but there are several different trim saw blades with different thicknesses that you can use depending on the type of stone you will be cutting. Some are more specifically for softer stones such as opals or turquoises etc, others for agates and jaspers. So I would take that into consideration. As far as the cabbing, if you want to get a great polish, you'll have to spend some on multiple wheels and grits. I'm close to posting my video on cabbing, but I use a Diamond Pacific Genie that has 6 Nova wheels. So I'm sure you can get replacement wheels for your unit if you want a higher polish, but unfortunately I'm not sure of ways to do this cheaply. As far as the ocean jasper, there are often lapidary clubs in cities where you can meet others who can give tips and advice on all things lapidary, and you can have access to saws. You'll need to cut that OJ with a slab saw to get good slabs for this. Or you could mail it to me and I'd cut it up for you and maybe just ask for a slice as payment ;) Hope this helps, sorry I don't have more solutions for you!

    "I don't like to commit too quick (ask my exes)". HILARIOUS! 😂🤣😅😍 Sean, this video is over 5 years old, what trim saw would you buy now if you were going to buy one? Any suggestions for a non-lapidary (for a business) just looking to add cutting to my jewelry making? Thank you.

      That is exactly the first thing I thought of also. I have long hair too. Know a lady who managed to get her hair wrapped while using a drill. Large patch gone instantly. Muy pain.

    Hi Sean, Looking for a new blade for my 12 inch saw. Wondering if you or anyone you know has tried the UKAM smart cut blades? Their web site shows in a cartoon
    drawing of how the diamonds are supposed to be lined up in layers and therefore making the sintered edge more aggressive and longer lasting. Any thoughts or
    recommendations for just hobby cutting Brazilian agates for my great grandkids. Thanks. Also, great vids.

      Mk303 is the best. Check Amazon, don't buy blades that are really cheap, it will cost you a lot more in the longrun

    I'm getting into lapidary work , i was wondering Would a trim saw work for cutting rocks into slabs , or would i need a slab saw to cut rocks into half ?

    • @memzo1629
      @memzo1629 4 года назад +1

      I fear the blade of a trim saw would be too small to cut large slabs out of big rough minerals. Lapidary workers usually have a slab saw which are 10'' or higher, and a smaller trim saw in order to cut cabochons out of the slabs.

    That hitec saw is terrible, and $600. You can buy a mk303 trim blade on Amazon for about $35 and I cut about 500 agates with it on average. I put the blade on a cheap $75 tile saw. I had this saw and it really sucks for agates.

    Sean, do you know anything about using a wet tile saw in lieu of a trim saw?

    • @SeanEckelArt
      @SeanEckelArt  6 лет назад

      can't say that i do.. i'm pretty new to lapidary actually, and the machines i show in these videos are the only ones i've ever really used. sorry! but i do think that a trim saw is pretty similar to a tile saw, so i would imagine they'd work in a similar manner.

      Don't buy one. Get mk303 sintered blade and put it on a cheap $75 tile saw.

      I've cut hundreds of hard lake superior agates with my cheap tile saw. With an mk sintered trim blade they cut great, and the stones are easy to hold onto. Either spend about $150 for my setup or spend $600 for a fancy trim saw it's your choice.

      @KOE 4o8 7" will only cut up to 3" agates. You must be using an extremely thin blade?
