    I'm a radio DJ and a classical singer and the closest I've ever gotten to a cow is the fact that there's an organic dairy across the street from where I live. My entire family remains confused as all get out about my obsession with this channel. Obviously they just need to watch it! Then they will understand. LOL

    • @TerryProthero
      @TerryProthero Год назад +7

      Probably well over 90% of the cows he trims just need a routine trim and aren't suffering from any significant problems. And then there are a small percentage of them with more serious problems like what you see in these videos. They are chosen to be shown, because if you watched what he does for most of his day, it would be extremely boring. He's, basically, just giving a cow a pedicure.
      Of those small number of bad cases, he can fix the vast majority. But then there are a few cows that he can't do a great deal for. He's not a vet, and some cows need serious medical attention. But even with those, he can often make them more comfortable or do some things that will make the vet's job easier. So, there are a few cows he just can't fix. But there aren't too many.
      The main ones he can't do a whole lot for are those with toe necrosis or those who have infections in the leg that can't be helped with a hoof trim. Toe necrosis is when an infection gets deep inside the hoof and starts destroying bones. He's had cases where the bone fell out of cow's hoof while he was trying to trim it. He can clear away dead tissue in cases like that and do other things to make the cow comfortable, but the damage done can't be reversed. A vet might need to amputate the infected claw or the animal might need to be put down. Other sorts of infections might be treated with antibiotics.

    • @taters-no4gj
      @taters-no4gj Год назад +2

      I watched one from a few months ago, where he mentioned there was nothing he could. But this was only because he'd noticed the delamination of the horn and a raging infection had taken hold, meaning he had to turn the cow over to the vet, who would prescribe pain relief, antibiotics and being kept in the barn and on soft straw while she heals. With regard to trimming; if they're overgrown, twisted or damaged, I've never seen him unable to provide the care that's needed 😉👍🏻

    • @amyeharris
      @amyeharris Год назад +3

      No, he doesn’t have many videos where he can’t fix the cow. Some require veterinary intervention as live tissue needs to be cut into (usually between the toes) which is beyond his training. Infections sometimes require antibiotics which are beyond his scope of practice as well. The other thing he can’t help is toe necrosis where the tissue has died but he can help manage it. Some cows’ toes are growing in a screw shape due to the rotation of the peddle bone, which is difficult if not impossible to fix. How’s that, Graeme? Did I miss anything?

    • @TerryProthero
      @TerryProthero Год назад

      @@amyeharris
      That's a pretty good list, but you didn't mention that the vast majority of trimmings don't end up in these videos because they would be boring to watch because of how few problems the cow has. And some of the conditions mentioned can be treated by a hoof trimmer to some extent. He can't cut into live tissue, but he can remove dead tissue caused by toe necrosis and can use blocks and other aids to aid in the comfort of the cow with that condition. And he can use iodine and other treatments to shrink live tissue in places where it doesn't belong. He has done that very effectively in a number of cases. And there are trimming techniques which can help with toes growing in a screw shape by changing the weight distribution. This can prevent it from getting worse or can even improve it in some cases. But it can get the cow walking normally again in almost all cases even if the internal problem isn't completely solved. But of all the things mentioned, I would say toe necrosis is probably the one he has the least ability to treat. It's a very ugly situation where you can have a big hole in the end of the toe and massive internal damage to the cow's foot.

    • @TerryProthero
      @TerryProthero Год назад

      @@taters-no4gj
      There have been a number of cases where he couldn't cure the underlying problem, but he could still make the cow more comfortable and walk more normally. There is a lot he can do except in the really extreme cases where only a vet can help the cow. But even then, he can often make the cow more comfortable until she is properly treated, or he can do things to make the job of the vet easier. I've seen a number of cases where he says he can't do anything for the cow and then proceeds to do a whole bunch of things for the cow.

      Usually it's with a dull edge that you get injured because you need to force more and can't control it properly. A properly sharpened edge is extremely unlikely to injure you as long as you hold it and use it properly. Sharp blades also leave a clean cut which is much easier to fix than a jagged, messy cut from a dull blade. My knowledge comes form woodworking chisels and not hoof trimming knives, but the same general knowledge applies to any blade.

    Just a widowed farm woman from the great agricultural state of Iowa. I find myself staying up late watching these videos. I do enjoy seeing the differences between Scotland and the USA. Tell Mrs. GP she rocks.

    It might not be 100 percent better but it looks much much better than before. You do great work for these animals.

    I have two questions for you one is about your knife work. I was wondering with digital dermatitis when you cut it with your knife and then you cut another part of the foot are you spreading that dermatitis. And second do you have a much older brother LOL

    I have read the negativity you have been given I watch the care you give to each cow, trimming is something to be trained for and I see what you have done

    I live in New Hampshire, USA. It is a small town that has several dairy farms in the area. I love stopping and spending time petting them. Just love cows 🐄. It is also fun to have a calf suck your fingers.
