For french speakers the akkusativ is like complément d'objet direct. The dativ is complément d'objet indirect.

Thank you so much, this concept of akkusativ/dativ has bothered me for quite some time and two different german teachers could not clarify this as concisely. I think it comes naturally to natives hence they can't explain it easily.
