We have the same cases in my mother tongue which is Arabic, so that makes it much easier to be understood. Otherwise, for others I believe it's hard because learning those cases in my own language was as hard as learning them in German now :D

German language be like a meme that says: "I DON'T WANT PEACE... I WANT PROBLEMS! ... ALWAYS!" instead of the cases, why don't you put the subject at the first of a sentence and put a single word like "der" for all the articles?

Let's be honest, if it weren't for these cases, German would be the easiest language to learn.

    Tips where very helpful:
    - Subject is always and always nominative.
    - Generally verbs are accusativ (better to learn non accusative ones)
    - If there is only one object it is generally accusativ
    - In case there are two object generally the non person one is accusative and person one is dative
    - In relation to previous line: Indirect object is in relation with the subject (generally non person so in accusativ), the indirect object is not in direct relation with the action in the sentence so can be another person (so dativ)
    - There is relatively small list of dative verbs.

    • @etihidalgogarrido8519
      @etihidalgogarrido8519 2 года назад +9

I think you are wrong in the fifth tip: Indirect object is NOT in relation with the subject, that is de direct object because it has direct relation with the subject, so direct object is akk and indirect object is usually a person. Read min 6:35 and 11:15

    -Nominativ is always the subject.
-One object will always be akkusativ
-When there’s objects and a person, the the person is dativ and the object is akkusativ
-you have to look at the verbs to know which one is dativ/akkusativ when you have 2 verbs.

Hallo, Lehrer! In Germany, there is an old, but beautiful building. On the forehead of the building there is the writing "DEM DEUTSCHEN VOLKE". In the past, I asked the Indonesian programme of Deutsche Welle about this: why suddenly there is a case of the dative used in the name of the building. But I still don't understand. Please explain why there suddenly has to be "dem" at the beginning of the name. That is my first question. To be continued.

21:06 Correct English translation might be "The picture pleases the man." Because in "The man likes the picture", 'the man' is obviously the subject and 'the picture' is the object. So it becomes confusing to accept 'dem Man' as dative (object) and 'das Bild' as nominative (subject) in corresponding German translation.

Hi Luzi...May i know why a verb is a dative or akkusative ? What makes a verb to fall in the category of Dative or akkusative....what is the logic behind this ? Let's take an example of "Helfen" verb....why helfen is a dative .?? .why it is not akkusative ?..Let me tell you my understanding and correct me if i am wrong. When it comes to help ...then of course you are going to help a person which is an indirect object in most of the cases ...that's why "helfen" falls in the category of dative ? ...let's take an exaample of "gehören" means to belong. So if i say "Gaza belongs to israel" Then isreal is not a person ....hence it clearly contradicts my assumption ....then why "gehören" is a dative verb ?

  • @Christopherjazzz

"Das Bild gefallt dem Mann" Isnt it supposed to be "Der Mann gefallt dem Bild". Or am i missing something here. Anyways, your videos are very good. probably the best compared to other youtube vides.

13:40 wouldn't the man be the subject in this first example? Since he is the one doing the verb (gefallen) to the picture?
EDIT: For anyone else who notices this, "Gefallen" is a special verb with different rules. He made a different video that goes into this.

    Please excuse my ignorance,
I have not yet seen any lessons on past-perfect and simple past tense sentence word order.
Question about example given in Bonus Tipp
What is the grammatical difference between these two sentences?
    1. Mia hat einen Laptop gekauft.
    2. Mia gekauft einen Laptop.
    3. Mia hat gekauft einen Laptop.
Is this the difference between past-perfect and simple past tense?

I don't understand why the people hate so much the german's cases, they are so simplified in comparison with the greek's ones, for example, I am studying german and greek, and I have to say that german gets all the advantages of having cases, like having more flexibility about the word's order or having the possibility to drop some prepositions when the case already gives you the meaning that you want, without all of that overwhelming morphology that greek has.

"Liest du gern Bücher"? means "Do you like to read books?"
Lit: "Read you willingly books"? This is rather a strange way of simply asking:
    Magst du Bücher zu lesen?

Great video. Thank you :) ❤
"Die Maus beißt die Katze". Cases don't answer the question who bit whom in this sentence. How does German solve that problem?

wem is whom. I presume it wouldn't be Dativ in arranged marriages or when trading a player between clubs. Ex. Tim was traded to Manchester whoever Tim is. Wouldn't he be in Acusativ there? Then Tim was given away in marriage, and then given by his new wife to the police once she found out who Tim was. Can you tell me how those would work???

Hi,First of all , I should say video is so informative. I have a doubt in this video .Hope someone will help. The sentence 'Das Bild gefällt dem Mann'.( You can see that sentence at 13.46 timing ). I understand that here 'Das Bild' is subject here because subject should always be in nominative and 'dem Mann' in dative . Then meaning of the sentence of the sentence will be ' The pictures likes the Mann' . But in the video he has written the meaning as ' The man likes the pictures' . I know what I said is not logically correct. But the sentence gives this meaning ' the picture likes the Mann'. Someone please tell me where am I wrong .

To say cases help understanding doesn't address the fact that feminine and neutral nouns use the same term for both nominative and accusative forms. So, as per your example, if I was to say: 'Die Frau beißt die Katze' you would have no idea who was biting who (following your example, and ignoring word order).

Sir may I know how to differentiate whether it is Akkusativ or Dativ by looking at sentences? Where should i focus first? If I don’t know whether the verb and articles are Akkusativ or Dativ?
