I'm a supporter from Austria, where we struggled for ages to make it to the champions league. Year in year out I watched our teams miss out on champions league football and my dad would tell me about former times, where the champions of the national leagues would face off and I loved the idea. Even the way the champions league is right now is sad for me, but this is a literal killing blow to football. I'm sad for the sport I loved since I was a 5 year old. This is insane.

I love how Martin Tyler is just throwing shade at how the US does its sports. Edit: There are obviously Americans that understand and love football too. Wes Edens is an owner at Aston Villa and he is incredible for our club.
As an American, he is spot on. The only thing that bears mentioning that he didn't point out is that American leagues have one element in place to regulate their business - the salary cap. American leagues want to solidify their respective bases to warrant further investment and expansion (capitalism). The salary cap keeps individual markets in check and puts the focus on the business acumen of the front offices - namely the General Manager (I think you guys call that position the Sporting Director). This is especially significant for the success of the NFL and why the league is MILES ahead of any other American league and why the NBA is often ridiculed for their lack of business foresight that has created a league that is top-heavy with a lot of below average teams - they are reliant on marketing and apparel sponsorship because viewership is low. I have often wondered what the Premier League would look like if there were a spending limit, but I doubt that would go over well at this point and I'm guessing that's what has attracted so many American billionaires to English football in recent times. I don't pretend to know what the solution is, but I hope this all gets sorted out soon because this is an awful look for the American investors in England. Business is business, but this is just greed for greed's sake with no regard for the patrons whatsoever.
I think what we need is independent third party independent to intervene for financial fair play for acquisition/investment. Basically, there's nothing wrong with investing in clubs. But the owners must prioritize investing in the club first than paying off the debt for the money they acquired the club. For example, there should be a rule that 75% (certain amount) should be reinvested in the club from the yearly profit/revenue. And third party should investigate and if that doesn't happen, the owners must sell the club or banned from the league. Otherwise, these people come in and do leverage buy out and leech from the club and the fans for all their generations.

I remember watching a prank show in which they targeted Gary Neville. A fake traffic warden told him he'd have to pay a fine on an obviously bogus charge. As an American I grew up watching American football. It wasn’t until I was exposed to Manchester football and the whole Premier League model of relegation, promotion, the history, the traditions and the passion of the fans that I fell in love with it all. It’s TRUE competition. You have to EARN the right to play in the league. It is unconscionable that these Big Six owners would use this pandemic as an opportunity to enrich themselves rather than find ways to bring the league back stronger than ever.....for the fans! Without the fans there is nothing! Change the rules of ownership. Germany got it right limiting business investors to 49%. Vote with your wallets fans. That’s the only language they’ll understand. As a United fan I'd rather see us lose to Burnley. Only reason they didn't beat us last night was the individual talent we've got untold millions to spend on. @R To be fair what you have in Europe is not superior in every way. For example in the NHL we have a salary cap so that every team in the league is restricted in how much money they can spend on player salaries. This has naturally created a level of competition that you will never see in the EPL. The 'big clubs' are big because of the history and having the best management, coaches and player development, etc. because they can't always just go out on the transfer market and buy better players. And the best players are a lot less mercenary because there's no temptation to jump around clubs looking for bigger and bigger paydays. Some of what's accepted in European football culture is a joke to us.

Im going to throw a spanner in the works.... in 1992, EVERYBODY opposed the Premier League. It was all about money at the time, and moving away from unsafe stadiums and hooliganism. Fast forward 20+ years, it became the best Footbal league in the world. I didnt hear anyone complain during the great years of Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. I believe this was a long time coming... its part of change and evolution. Leicester fan here. I love watching my team win and play against the top six. Plus win the premier league which was beyond my wildest dream. But I also love to watch Lincoln City play Arsenal in the FA cup quarter-final, Wigan beating man city. That's what I love, it's a people game and not a money game.

I'm a supporter from Austria, where we struggled for ages to make it to the champions league. Year in year out I watched our teams miss out on champions league football and my dad would tell me about former times, where the champions of the national leagues would face off and I loved the idea. Even the way the champions league is right now is sad for me, but this is a literal killing blow to football. I'm sad for the sport I loved since I was a 5 year old. This is insane.

As an American, he is spot on. The only thing that bears mentioning that he didn't point out is that American leagues have one element in place to regulate their business - the salary cap. American leagues want to solidify their respective bases to warrant further investment and expansion (capitalism). The salary cap keeps individual markets in check and puts the focus on the business acumen of the front offices - namely the General Manager (I think you guys call that position the Sporting Director). This is especially significant for the success of the NFL and why the league is MILES ahead of any other American league and why the NBA is often ridiculed for their lack of business foresight that has created a league that is top-heavy with a lot of below average teams - they are reliant on marketing and apparel sponsorship because viewership is low. I have often wondered what the Premier League would look like if there were a spending limit, but I doubt that would go over well at this point and I'm guessing that's what has attracted so many American billionaires to English football in recent times. I don't pretend to know what the solution is, but I hope this all gets sorted out soon because this is an awful look for the American investors in England. Business is business, but this is just greed for greed's sake with no regard for the patrons whatsoever.

I think what we need is independent third party independent to intervene for financial fair play for acquisition/investment. Basically, there's nothing wrong with investing in clubs. But the owners must prioritize investing in the club first than paying off the debt for the money they acquired the club. For example, there should be a rule that 75% (certain amount) should be reinvested in the club from the yearly profit/revenue. And third party should investigate and if that doesn't happen, the owners must sell the club or banned from the league. Otherwise, these people come in and do leverage buy out and leech from the club and the fans for all their generations.

I remember watching a prank show in which they targeted Gary Neville. A fake traffic warden told him he'd have to pay a fine on an obviously bogus charge. As an American I grew up watching American football. It wasn’t until I was exposed to Manchester football and the whole Premier League model of relegation, promotion, the history, the traditions and the passion of the fans that I fell in love with it all. As a United fan I'd rather see us lose to Burnley. Only reason they didn't beat us last night was the individual talent we've got untold millions to spend on. I have been a Manchester united fan since 1997. Back when premier league wasn't even a thing in South Sudan. I used to beg my uncle to borrow his 📻 so I could listen to BBC5 Lives commentary of Man Utd game right after school. Right in the mid of Sudan Civil War, I would be listening to live commentary while the plane is hovering over us to bomb, I didn't care one bit. Adults thought I was a crazy kid. They didn't understand what I was listening to because there is no point listening to a radio when you are that young. The thing is, Manchester united was my escape from the drama I was growing up in. My best day was when my uncle took me to the UNITED NATION compound to Watch the Uefa champions League final against Bayern Munich at night. I can't even explain that feeling except to say, "AND SOLKJAER AS WON IT."Now that greed has come to kill our beautiful game, all those memories are on life support now.

@R To be fair what you have in Europe is not superior in every way. For example in the NHL we have a salary cap so that every team in the league is restricted in how much money they can spend on player salaries. This has naturally created a level of competition that you will never see in the EPL. The 'big clubs' are big because of the history and having the best management, coaches and player development, etc. because they can't always just go out on the transfer market and buy better players. And the best players are a lot less mercenary because there's no temptation to jump around clubs looking for bigger and bigger paydays. Some of what's accepted in European football culture is a joke to us.
Its a brand name. Like Champions league where 90% of entrants are losers not champions. And America is not really a country tbh. Its like the EU. Each of those states are a seperate country in a union.

Im going to throw a spanner in the works.... in 1992, EVERYBODY opposed the Premier League. It was all about money at the time, and moving away from unsafe stadiums and hooliganism. Fast forward 20+ years, it became the best Footbal league in the world. I didnt hear anyone complain during the great years of Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. I believe this was a long time coming... its part of change and evolution. EVERYBODY WILL BE ACCEPTING AND EMBRACING THIS IN 5 YEARS TIME, AND TODAYS COMPLAINTS WILL LONG BE FORGOTTEN.

Leicester fan here. I love watching my team win and play against the top six. Plus win the premier league which was beyond my wildest dream. But I also love to watch Lincoln City play Arsenal in the FA cup quarter-final, Wigan beating man city. That's what I love, it's a people game and not a money game.

There's a very nasty smell pervading from the higher echelons of the so called big six of English football, no thought whatsoever given to the fans who, we are told, have been so severely missed during the pandemic. I urge every fan, media company, tv and radio station to boycott any of the clubs who sign up to this insane project.
Look at the clubs signing this monstrosity:
Barcelona - Major cash issues
Milan clubs - always teetering on the edge of disaster
United - struggling to make CL consistently, major debt issues
Arsenal - struggling to make CL consistently, financial issues
Spurs - struggling to make CL consistently, financial issues
Liverpool - struggling to make CL consistently, perceive themselves as underfunded
Chelsea - struggling to make CL consistently
This is all about pulling up the lift bridge and battening down the hatches. These clubs have been run terribly over the last 20-odd years and are deathly afraid of what the next 10 will bring. ESL is a convenient out and a stick with which to beat UEFA and the national associations into giving them additional perks for being big and popular.
