    Q. What is Early Music performance, or historical performance?
    A. We play on instruments from the time of the composers, and we use the original music and playing techniques: it’s a special sound.
    Q. Why are there no conductors?
    A. Conductors weren’t invented until the 19th century; since we seek to recreate a historical performance, the music is led from the keyboard or violin, or the music is played as chamber music~or both :)
    Q. What are period instruments or original instruments; how are they different from modern instruments?
    A. As instruments became modernized in the 19th century, builders and players tended to focus on the volume of sound and the stability of tuning. Modern steel strings replaced the older materials, and instruments were often machine made. Historical instruments, built individually by hand and with overall lighter construction, have extremely complex overtones-which we find delightful. Modern instruments are of course perfectly suited to more modern music.
    Q. Why is the pitch lower, or higher?
    A. Early Music performance uses many different pitches, and these pitches create different tone colors on the instruments. See goo.gl/pVBNAC
One of the most complex and beautiful works of the 17th century; the motet is scored in dense, dark counterpoint with a soaring, declamatory vocal line which intertwines with the solo violin part. The rich texture of the strings is leavened with exclamatory moments in which the strings echo the voice as a group; in this fashion, the strings temporarily assume the role of the chorus: this call-and-response style was customary in settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, following a tradition which dates back to the time of Thomas Tallis in the renaissance.

For this performance, a new edition was prepared from the original manuscript in the Düben collection, which is one of the most important collections of German music in Europe. The Düben family was part of the inner circle of the royal family of Sweden.
    Lament
O, that I had water enough in my head
and my eyes were wells of tears,
    so that night and day
    I could lament my sins.
    My sins overwhelm me;
    Like a heavy burden,
    they have become too painful
    and so I weep,
and my eyes flow with water.
    My sighs are many;
    my heart is afflicted:
Thus the Lord has made me full of lamentations in this day of his terrible wrath.

The greatest piece by the greatest composer of the Bach family "before Bach". In this performance, I particularly like the convincing way Christopher Lowrey embellishes the da capo part.

It seems that the great J.S. Bach admired his cousin Johann Cristoph Bach very much as a componist. Well now I know why, what a beautiful, heartbreaking aria!

Woao!

Always thought J.S. Bach's son , J.C. , was not as profound a composer as his father; ..... but this piece proves, if not quite his greatness, at least his position as a worthy successor.
