Good catch! On the bright side, Adam had 13 other cards in hand so it's very likely he was able to still utilize the Chrome Mox. (Spoiler alert) It doesn't end up changing much on the turn(s) for the rest of the game
SPOILER in response to the oath of kaya that technically didnt kill me. It was a long game and I wasnt thinking of how the spell resolved, I just figured it bolted me and I died before the lifegain. That's not correct and I woudve lived at 3 life thus going to discards and giving Jordan a ton of waste not value. If we had caught this and known how the card worked I wouldve just cast other spells to trigger bloodchief and take myself out so in all scenarios I wouldn't have lived to give Jordan all those discard triggers. Just wanted to clear that up for people. Also by bad on the chrome mox. Forgot the bird was a robot and c ou uldnt be put under chrome mox. And yes I had plenty of other cards I could have chucked away to it that were legal targets.
Not crazy about seeing people scoop or try to kill themselves to prevent someone from winning. If they took you out of the game (pretty much) and you end up giving them something in return, that's life. Not a fan of the spite plays.
19:50 - Oath of Kaya does not kill Adam as it deals 3 damage to him AND gains him 3 lfe when it resolves. State-based actions are then checked, and Adam is still at 3 life. He is then killed by Jordan's Bloodchief in his cleanup step.
If I'd known it worked that way I could have just played other spells to put them in the yard and take myself out that way. Thought it would have been spicier to go out with kayas but I oofed
Adam I respect that. But with the oath of Kaya fully resolving and the audience not knowing the groups policy on a rewind. That still would grant nekusaur a potential large amount of value
This channel is very effective at teaching players to always pay for Rhystic Study. Adam probably wouldn’t have had such a scary boardstate T5 if people just paid for Study.
A little bit of constructive criticism, I think it would be a little more helpful to have different descriptions other than “slower but consistent” in the deck introductions and starting hands. I think it would be a nice little detail to have different short descriptions of each deck’s pitfalls instead of just the slower but consistent.
The issue isn't really Consultation, but Oracle that just automatically wins. With Jace out, there was room for people to remove the planeswalker. This win was also refreshing, as I was instead thinking that Notion Thief would thwart the win as his replacement effect would resolve first due to priority/stack resolution. I was wrong and I also learned about replacement effects and how those are much different from triggered abilities. Also, play of the game: Oath of Kaya. Mad respect. xD
Hey, I haven't mentioned this before, but the competitive meter is nicer and clearear than in the previous season. The production value of your videos is amazing. You rock!
Your ruling on Jace was correct, but for the wrong reason 616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected object’s controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below. truncated
You should play Zur's Weirding in the Nekusar deck. It combos with Bloodchief Ascension. The combo basically says if an opponent would draw a card you make them discard that card instead. Then you just do that until you win or whatever way you want to win
gotta love and appreciate the dedication to the tracking of blue enchantments new to the channel, love your work! :) one of the better channels out there imo.
Yes, indeed. It is supposed to be cEDH yet people refuse to run Oracle because of "personal distaste". Sorry, if that is your mindset then unfortunately it is not cEDH.
Yeah, agreed. I think the recoil expressed against the Consultation win was on an episode aiming for more casual gameplay and everyone expected that specific episode to be different.
Love the video! Regarding Consultation/Thassa's Oracle: I really don't mind it as the wincon. The first game from S2E4 with the Doomsday win was freaking slick and has inspired me to build a deck around Doomsday myself. I think the WAY you get to Oracle changes the context of what's happening (re: Doomsday). At the same time, as had been said by others, the AMOUNT of straight Consultation lines was a bit much this season. I know you guys have said you're restructuring season 3, and I just want to say (at least for myself) that it's not the Oracle win, more the ubiquity of it that can get a bit stale. Still, love your guys' content and can't wait for the fan favorite episode to come out!
I personally don't mind the consultation or flash-hulk lines, But the core strenght of the idea of casually competitive is the fact that you have the flexibility to toy and tinker with the format, you can get as creative as you want without taking that much power to the decks you play, showcasing off the wall wincons and strategies and not the hyper efficient one-note of the cEDH scene. Love the videos! keep up the amazing work
One point of feedback: When a player has stacked the top of their deck and another player mills them, it would be nice to highlight the cards which were milled over. In this particular game, it would matter when Ashiok milled a vampiric tutor target, then again when Jace milled a Lim Dul's pile. Love the content!
That was an exciting game! Always good to see some planeswalker value, and all those tax and discard shenanigans were crazy! One of my favorite games on the channel, I think!
I almost thought the game was going to end turn 2 with Joseph's hand. I would have searched consultation with the vampiric tutor and then just tried to win with thassa's oracle using the dockside treasures, especially with a counterspell in hand. Though i guess that wouldn't make for a very good video if it worked.
Getting a bit tiring to see this amount of hate for the Oracle Consultation combo. It's cEDH, each player brings a deck to _win_ for each game of the season. While yes, it can _occasionally_ be tiresome to see another back and forth game for the week and see the combo pop out of nowhere for another win, the players went out of their way to pod the Consult decks in with each other, and yet people are still complaining? For my two cents, thanks for the entertaining game as always! Looking forward to next week. The counter debate on T1 is some classic magic, holding a counterspell expecting to see something more dangerous later is always a calculated risk. Especially when you have to 2-for-1 yourself with a freebie like FoN, I can see why Adam held his hand through the Waste Not.
2 Questions! (Not about Kaya's Oath) *SPOILERS* How does the Jace draw a card for Nate while Notion Thief is out? (I understand Nate chooses priority, but that doesn't negate the replacement effect, does it?) When Adam milled Jordan at 11:20, what happened to Jordan's Top?
20:03 how does the oath kill him here? its all a single trigger so state based effects aren't checked until it finishes resolving so he should still be at 3 after
Hey man i won one of the token giveaways on your stream from tonight but i don't think twitch is letting my messages go through to you, in the whispers box it shows a slash through the message icon.
He couldn't kill himself with Oath of Kaya like that (damage and gaining life are in the same line, no net change in life total). However, there are plenty of draw spells he could have tutored to lose to Nekusar with
I’m not really a fan of Aminatou = I want to stick to Chulane brain dead value instead of trying to play a unique commander that requires build around.
@@nicholasberry8456 Actually I'm not a cEDH player, I just watch the videos because they're entertaining. I love unique commanders that require build around (I used to have a gruul knights deck built around Jerrard of the Closed fist) and don't really like your insinuation
Does Oath of Kaya work differently than Lifelink? Because I thought that would just end up healing him back to three since the damage and healing happens at the same time, but I could be wrong
So impressed with Jordan and his Nekusar deck. He really has pushed this deck really far and he put in so much work this game. Even though it has demonic consultation in the deck, I hope to keep seeing Nekusar every so often with your playgroup. Its insanely fun to watch and I am so inspired to build my own
Question: Are the Red, Green, Blue, and Black (not sure if to include this one) "lights" above people's life totals for decoration or are they some kind of indicator?
I think you said exactly why people don't like demonic consultation. The entire game up until the win was interactive and exciting. Then consultation hit and the game ended in an instant.
Just got to say I love your content! The graphics are not in your face at all, high quality commentary and graphics as well, simple yet effective! Much prefer this than shows like game knights with in your face effects... keep it up
I get the urge to hold priority and copy your own spell with Fork/Reverberate, but wouldn't it have been better to try and resolve the original and save the copy spell as a backup in the event of a counterwar?
Great video guys, personally I dont mind the consult wins as this channel is more focused on the competitive end of edh which is what makes this channel special!
Loving that Nekusar action. Pretty sure that deck would have won just from the board state had there not been a combo win at that point. It's decks like this that give me hope that non-combo based wins are still doable... and then the game is randomly won by a consultation anyways. Also, little side note: it's technically not possible to kill yourself with Oath of Kaya, since the lifegain and damage both happen basically simultaneously. Before state-based effects are checked (and thus a player with 0 life loses the game), you have already re-gained those 3. I realise it's just a fancy way of conceding, still wanted to clear up the rules interaction in case it might get relevant at some point.
but still three of the deck have a consultation win with ether thassa, jace or lab maniac so i think its time to see something else... we all know that consultation/tainted pact with a lab effect is the perfect/fast/most competitf version of edh(cedh) but there is still a lot of more wincon in the format. i dont hate lab consultation win but every game that i see of cedh on youtube is all with a consultation line and this is really boring in my perspective, like a said its the most competitf line of cedh and its fine but that mean that all the video on not just this channel but every cedh channel are the almost the same....
Mystic is definitely the hit. After the waste not he only had two cards in hand. So for immediate value he would have needed one more mana and a wheel. Or winds of change. So it was a good chance they were safe from the waste not. Which was mostly accurate.
They played it incorrectly. The active player trigger to win the game never goes on the stack. Even if it did the active player cant cose to have his resolve first (otherwise a spell would never get counted).
He controlled two replacement effects: If an opponent would draw a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, instead that player skips that draw and you draw a card. If you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead. Because these replacement effects replace the same event he gets to choose which one happens. So he chooses to win the game.
@@shogert2370 actually the way replacement effects work is if you are the one affected by multiple replecement effects or your permanent is, you choose the order, and they don't use the stack, it just replace an action
I don't like fish, I stop fish when I can. Letting them get the extra draws is a problem in my eyes, but I would stop fish from finding them the wheel effects through drawing off the fish
I don't want to be rude but this game had 2 very large game changing mistakes (and one small one with chrome mox). Oath of kaya and Jace. This channel is often riddled with little misplays that probably wouldn't effect much, but those were game changing. If Nekusar wasn't my first and favorite commander, I probably wouldn't care, but my boy got screwed.
I had a doubt. At a time someone attempted to copy winds of change with fork, and a big chain of spellcounters was built. For some reason winds of change was countered at last, but no one countered the fork, and the fork didn't resolve. I think the fork should resolve no matter if the copied spell was countered. Am I right?
@@ODIRGO no. Fork has no valid target. Other spells put copies of spells on the stack, fork copies a targeted spell. If you remove the target the spell fizzles.
But hey, no Thassa's Oracle, so the problem is automatically gone! I really see Demonic Consultation as the real issue and no Thassa's Oracle. Even without it, people would run LabMan for almost the same effect. This win con isn't fun to see when all people do (all 4 of them) Tutor 2 cards > win. Why not throw a D20 and see who wins instead of playing mtg?!
I’m hoping season 3 we will see jank decks. Maybe see non blue decks. Don’t get me wrong I like to see competitive decks and interaction. I would like to casual games like game knights and star city games which draws a lot of viewers to see. Cards we don’t often don’t see a lot of play instead of the usual mental misstep and flusterstorm shenanigans.
First of all, I am not sure if exiling jace was the best idea ever but fluesterstorm would be a big lose as well so I can understand it, however, if you see a Nekusar players with turn 1 Waste Not, you cant let it stay around, it was highly like that turn 2 wheel might be coming, with waste not, it might end the game if Jordan got a bit lucky, even though he only had 5 cards in his starting hand it might end up really badly for the rest. So, from this game's point of view it was a good decision and Waste Not wasnt super crucial here but if Jordan had different cards in his hand it might be a crucial mistake for the game so the gamble worked but I feel it was super risky and probably a bad decision
It was explained on the video, but basically both notion thief and jace are replacements effects, thief wants to steal the draw and jace wants to win. When multiple replacements effects affect a player he/she may choose the order, so he can choose for jace to win instead of having his draw stolen
@@MtgArdeen I would have thought it would have gone like most other effects go, where active player's stuff would go last and go in reverse turn order.
@@dennisyoung6122 This comes up a lot, it's a very common misunderstanding. Replacement effects - Notion Thief and Jace's passive are both replacement effects - do not use priority order. In the event that two or more replacement effects try to affect the same thing - in this instance, the draw from Jace's +1 - the controller of the effect chooses which replacement effect applies. The explanation in the video didn't quite get it right, active/nonactive priority order has nothing to do with it. That said, they did play it out correctly, with the owner of the Jace choosing which effect applied.
@@Zzectbu Exactly and well explained. This is the exact rule for those interested: 616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected object’s controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below. If two or more players have to make these choices at the same time, choices are made in APNAP order
Doesnt the damage dealt by Nekusar add to the Commanderdamage-Count? I dont think it would ve made a difference, but you have to keep that in mind. Or does only combat damage affect that count?
Oath of kaya shouldn’t have killed Adam. State based actions are not checked during resolution of a spell with no punctuation. He would have lost 3, gone to 0, then gained 3 and not lost the game.
Hopefully the team realizes incorrect plays sooner. While there are many factors for this, it gives a feels bad vibe or even a weird spite play. It is Casually Competitive, not Sub Par Gaming. Overall, still a great watch.

10:40ish how could he cast arena? The bird doesnt pay for colored and he used an island/command tower to cast it. Did I miss an urborg somewhere?
he used forbidden orchard + swamp at 10:14
those opening hands tho
I see nekusar i click like.
I still don’t understand how Nate drew his last card even though notion thief was on field
They played it incorrectly. The active player trigger to win the game never goes on the stack. Even if it did the active player cant cose to have his resolve first (otherwise a spell would never get counted).
He controlled two replacement effects:
If an opponent would draw a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, instead that player skips that draw and you draw a card.
If you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead.
Because these replacement effects replace the same event he gets to choose which one happens. So he chooses to win the game.
@@MrKarato even though he doesn't control the thief effect?
@@coleburke9781 more importantly, he controls the action that get replaced(draw).
So, as an owner, he can choose how to put then on the stack
@@shogert2370 actually the way replacement effects work is if you are the one affected by multiple replecement effects or your permanent is, you choose the order, and they don't use the stack, it just replace an action
The meta stale though that all 4 decks win cons were a lab man/thassa/jace consultation line.
blue + black + X seems to be a very viable color combination

AH YES

Yay... more demonic consultation wins... who would have thought that's how the game would end???
But hey, no Thassa's Oracle, so the problem is automatically gone! I really see Demonic Consultation as the real issue and no Thassa's Oracle. Even without it, people would run LabMan for almost the same effect. This win con isn't fun to see when all people do (all 4 of them) Tutor 2 cards > win. Why not throw a D20 and see who wins instead of playing mtg?!
Yo everyone is kinda doing the same, i would like to see more reactive/taxes deck, like marath for example, or alesha, got a few decklist i can link
Lol foreal. It's always " demonic consultation, Oracle " or " doomsday, lab " but it's a cedh channel so I guess...
ROFL i love how the person that has disdain for a good card dies first.
Great Video
I don't think Jace is a replacement effect - I believe it does not make a win when Notion Thief is on the table and he'd have to wait a round.
weird question, have you (joseph) ever made runescape videos? your voice sounds extremely familiar
Oh cool my two favorite colors esper and grixis
I think there was misplay, eg, chrome mox imprinting baleful strix and oath of Kaya does 3 Dmg and gain 3 life. So Adam shouldn’t die.
So I'm really confused how jace managed to even trigger the win condition even though notion thief would prevent the draw.
19:52 Oath of kaya can't kill yourself, you gain the 3 life simultaneously when youd deal damage, Adam would've been at 3 life still
Doesnt the damage dealt by Nekusar add to the Commanderdamage-Count? I dont think it would ve made a difference, but you have to keep that in mind. Or does only combat damage affect that count?
only combat damage
Oath of kaya shouldn’t have killed Adam. State based actions are not checked during resolution of a spell with no punctuation. He would have lost 3, gone to 0, then gained 3 and not lost the game.
Non-active players' triggers resolve before active player's
More Consultation plz
#banconsultation
Wasnt it so that the active players effect just go first on the stack so resolve last
Apnap order means notion thief's replacement effect stops the jace win
what happenened to the sensei's top at 11:20 aha
Hopefully the team realizes incorrect plays sooner. While there are many factors for this, it gives a feels bad vibe or even a weird spite play. It is Casually Competitive, not Sub Par Gaming.
Overall, still a great watch.
How did he win exactly? So lost
