I loved seeing the Oathmark miniatures used in a skirmish game. These days it's just too hard for me to play games with a high model count, and large rulebooks with a lot of crunch have become less desirable. How do you like One Page Rules compared to other skirmish games, and are there other simple skirmish games you might recommend?
I love skirmish games. They have always ranked high in my favourites. One Page Rules are excellent. They are very straight forward, quick to play and the basic rules are free so there is no barrier to giving them a go. Complexity is added depending on what models you are using and the range of armies and units is huge. Where it stumbles sightly for me, is that it can be a little too quick and bloody. I like a little "grind" where the skirmishes are at a bit of a slower pace, but that's a very minor issue and totally a personal preference. I love The Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game. It's a straight forward game that plays at a slower pace than OPR, though I feel later editions over complicated it (the blue, One Ring rulebook is where it's at!). The Joseph A. McCullough trilogy (Frostgrave, Stargrave and Rangers of the Shadowdeep) are all excellent skirmish games with essentially the same engine. Another fairly straight forward ruleset with complexity added by character options. They have an inbuilt campaign mechanic allowing you to grow your warbands and characters as you play. Hope that helps out!
Really like your use of OPR fantasy skirmish for the smaller in between battles. I think the rules look really fun and fit into an oathmark campaign really smoothly. Great batrep and awesome narrative. Can't wait to see what the future holds for Moxis as the campaign continues. Poor Archmage. Guess the council won't be hearing of Lord Rycharde’s attitude problems after all.
This is a nice change of pace and a good demonstration of how the skirmish rules are different from the pitched battles. I can see how the skirmishes can get quite dicey (pun intended) with the flanking maneuvers, as both wizards discovered to their detriment. I'm also appreciating how the simplified rules can be very flexible. If someone wanted to implement homebrew rules on top of the base rules and conduct a, let's say, Gorkamorka-style chaotic vehicle chase scene, that would be easy to do. Moxis is proving to be quite the interesting character. Not interested in wholesale slaughter, successful appeals to honor and pragmatism, and even quite willing to get into the fray with his staff and dagger for a decapitation strike when the opportunity presents itself.
Glad you enjoyed Aramis! Yeah, sometimes it's good to mix things up and do some smaller actions that rank n' flank isn't suitable for. With Moxis, I wanted to flesh him out from the simple villian he was initially introduced as in the Dwarf campaign. So, while still up to no good, he's willing to compromise and has is own sense of honour. Especially if he's benefiting from it!
@@AshandStoneNZ I like seeing villains who have something of a sense of honor, even if it's purely pragmatism. The battle is clearly won, so why fight further? Why waste lives and resources on either side? Even if Moxis is perfectly capable and willing to slaughter his foes to the man, it still shows something of his character that he chooses to hold back when he has the overwhelming advantage. Though based on the voicework, I get the impression he's more just tired of having to deal with interlopers and distractions to his work and would rather the battle be over with already, though that's still a fun kind of villain!
He's absolutely got his own work he'd rather be getting on with! Though captives give him access to resources and skills that mindless skeletons cannot provide. Not sure if you saw the link (it's probably not as well highlighted as it should be) but I did put together a short story set just after this skirmish which you can find here: www.patreon.com/posts/short-story-time-69145658 It's hardly high literature, but it bridges the gap!
Cheers Desmond! I know right? I love a game that's close, but sometimes the dice just don't play ball. Though to be fair, the poor bowmen were probably still shaken from the last encounter! I would be!
Awesome terrain and nice storytelling. I d love to see another LotR rules szenario in the campaign though. The great battle of the dwarves in the mines/smithies is still one of my favourites from season 1, since it reminds me of the good old times. :D I do see the benefit of the OPR rules though, they are much quicker and keep the action flowing, great system.
Cheers Nils! Glad you enjoyed it! I would love to do another LOTR game. It's one of my favourite game systems, as my much loved one ring rulebook will attest! It's definitely a different tone to OPR. OPR is much quicker and bloodier, whereas larger LOTR games have that "grind" to them. Which is a charm all of it's own and something I really like seeing play out!
@@AshandStoneNZ absolutely. Back in the day we sometimes played 1.500 point games over the course of a day. At the end you can really feel that battle in your bones. 😃
Oh yeah! Those games were awesome. They definitely took some doing though! The best part was seeing the battle lines shift across the field as the battle progressed before shattering as one side managed to break the others line. And it all happened organically.
@@AshandStoneNZ yes, great stuff. And apart from that, it is just awe inspiring to see 80 Orks on the table marching up in ranks and swarming your thin but firm Dwarven line (back in the day, when dwarfs had no spears). Awesome memories!
Oh man! I forgot Dwarves had no spears. But boy were they a tough nut to crack! Even with only one line, the enemy was often wider as well as deeper than you, but still you could endure! Good times.
Not sure why but didn't get notified about this, but luckily saw this now and man I do enjoy your videos, hopefully my notifications will work again in the future
Weird! RUclips's been showing it off to a bunch of new people so I don't know why you wouldn't get a notification as well. I'm glad you found it in the end though!
Great battle report as always. The Gods have started favouring Moxis at last. I wonder if your world has any Vampires in it. I would love to see a Vampire Lord and his Vampire Knights join Moxis. Keep up with the good work! Cheers!
I haven't been able to stop watching just made buy the rule book it seems to flow so well. Great game. Love your table are they kids play or gym mats painted?
Cheers Dale! High praise indeed! They are just generic foam floor mats. I picked mine up from the hardware store. I have a couple of videos on how I use them: Grass tiles: ruclips.net/video/TCcxZPk-Dp4/видео.html (with the addendum that you should use tacky carpet glue instead of PVA to glue the grout and grass to the mat), and underground tiles: ruclips.net/video/6Q-wmVDVQI0/видео.html
Moxis is a Necromancer with honor. Ransom indeed
Oh man, I'm sure I replied to this! Can't have gone through.
Yeah, absolutely! Sometimes a favour's more useful than a spot of murder!

I'm sure Lord Rycharde will have some tales to tell the council in return!
I absolutely loved this, I'm very impressed with how one page rules plays. I'll be watching for more like this.
Cheers mate! I appreciate it!

Terrific episode and just heart wrenching to see those bowmen perform so abysmally... Very much looking forward to your next battle report.

Cheers Gyrion! Thanks heaps for the support!
Beautiful table and great story.
Cheers mate! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
The plot is so glorious, Moxis is quite the badass in CQC.
Cheers Grim! Things are looking up for ol' Moxis!
Chris, your campaigns have inspired me to start my own, involving Grimnar and Grymelda , dwarven prince and princess
That's awesome Phil! I'd love to hear more!
I hope the dice roll in Grimnar and Grymeldas favour!
Very enjoyable as always the table looked awesome cant wait for the next one
Thanks very much Gary!

There are definitely vampires in the world and I'm looking forward to bringing one to the table!
This video was awesome! Only thing that was poor was those hunters’ aim with their shots haha
Cheers mate! There's no accounting for the luck of the dice!
That Archmage must have gotten his rank due to his years in study, cause there's no way he was made that way based on skill. XD
😆 I think they were giving them out in boxes of cereal!

@@AshandStoneNZ thanks for the quick reply and praise is needed. I'll watch these now
No worries, and thank you!
Do you like Oathmark or OPR Regiments better?
Oathmark, 100%.
