      I think the old big body 60 and 70 cars looked better than those curvy cars from the 90s and early 2000 I thought the 97-98 99 Ford F-150 was probably the ugliest Ford F-150 I've ever seen. I'm so glad they went back to a straight Hood and straight up and down Grill. Same with a Chevy Silverado. I just don't like a slopey hood and laid back Grill. Straight corners and angles looked a lot better than curves.

    Appreciate the redesign although none should ever put thin tyres on such cars. It looks super dated and cheesy like a 00s restomod. Rear view cameras is the only options now when it comes to modernisation. Same on black window tint: it wont age well considering electrochromatic glass is on its way to mass produced cars.
    I truly hope as battery techs progress, we'll see more diversity in car sculptures like it's Syd Mead artworks. I'm totally sick of egg-shaped karenmobiles.

  • @rpsmith2990
    @rpsmith2990 3 года назад +17

    First thought I have is that chrome isn't the eighth deadly sin, so I'd have deleted exactly none of it. That is a problem best left in the '80s, and better blamed on automotive journalists of the time. In a way, Cadillac trying to chase BMW has proven a mistake. I also think that the dimensions shouldn't change. In some ways, we're stuck with SUVs, I think, because Americans have not, in some way, ever forgiven car makers for downsizing the full size car.
    That straight line you've enjoyed so much is really an artifact of the 1959 model.
    Another thing to remember in a modern redesign is to ignore completely the orthodoxy of modern car interiors, particularly in the reduction of interior color choices. The car you're starting with here had eight leather interior choices, and a similar number of cloth interiors to choose from. There are companies positioning themselves as luxury car companies that show an appalling lack of choice in their interiors.
    One element that you've captured that is so lost on modern designers is simplicity of line, and it is much appreciated.

    • @henrysniper8481
      @henrysniper8481 3 года назад +2

      I love Chrome ! More is better. 😄 And talk about interior color, get me started ! I remember looking into a 74 Buick Electra that had gorgeous blue velour, it looks so elegant and inviting ! One of my first new-ish cars was a 1973 Chevy Vega GT. My favorite color is red and this one was bright red on the outside and bright red on the inside. The minute I got in, I said I'm buying this car. I guess I got a good one because through the years I had no problem with it and it didn't burn oil.

    • @be5952

      @Robert Smith --- *_Yes!_*
      I used to think car design, quality and, to a lesser extent, technology would progress linearly.
      As we know, that fantasy crashed heavily.
      I could go on for pages about these categories, but the one I never saw coming was the _bor-i-fi-cation_ and _gen-er-i-fi-cation_ of interiors.
      Given the ability to create just about any material and colour and, with the benefits of historical aesthetic design hindsight, modern car interiors should be in such a plethora of colours, fabrics (and other materials) and interesting designs that it would make our heads spin!
      Instead, every stupid car buyer has allowed manufacturers to *_push us into the same, BORING, UGLY, FUNEREAL, monochromatic, non-colour, lint-revealing interior ever conceived!_*
      It's like we're all *_'Stepford wives'_* robotically giving in to the worst non-idea.

    The updated version looks a bit like a four door Eldorado from the 1971-1972 era. The Cadillac buyers of the 50s through 70s just aren't around and the new buyers have a wide variety of other brands to choose from now, so whatever Cadillac represented in America's hay day, doesn't now. I see new Cadillac's and they just don't stick out like they use to. They look just like all the other cars in their price range.

Low ground clearance is great for looks, and track cars, but not so great in real-world driving.

    Hey man. You're literally saying my words ❤ I'm also an extreme automotive enthusiast and I also feel that the late 60s - early 70s era was the most beautiful era of cars, specially American ones. General Motors group, Chrysler group, Ford group everyone were slamming their timeless designs with massive displacement engines ❤ Those were the days when designers were literally free of the rule book manufacturers are tightly holding today. I also feel that the efficiency game and wish of carbon neutral emissions is brutally murdering the designs. Thrist of minimalism is killing the beauty of cars and even bikes, curves are getting deleted from them and stright geometric shapes are taking their place. Also the bikes are suffering from this design philosophy. EVs are looking like big toys which you can drive. Also the EV 2W are looking toys with weird shapes and panels . That's also a reason for me to hate EVs. Function is heavily dominating the form aspect 😢

    Totally disagree that "everybody wants a crossover."
    I think everybody is _told_ that they want/need a crossover, so they're tricked into believing they need one. It's all in order to justify significantly higher profit margins for manufacturers. Bigger car has always meant bigger price, and so if you make every car big, you can justify raising the price floor for the entire industry to squeeze more people out of their money since you're offering "more car."

    As with all Mr. -Monkey's works, enjoyable seeing the changes gradually morphing for what had to be the earliest manifestation of the boxy design era up through the '80'es as he mentioned. Noting the numerous comments contrasting 'resto-mod' v. 'update' it just strikes me that it presents the frequent outcomes involving de-chroming and shaving to lose more dated design and then integrating more contemporary model production cues. That's simply what I watched happening, so interesting the seeming dissonance some felt. Cadillac rolled out its Arts & Science Design Program in early '00'es right after I snagged a mid nineties 'whale body' Fleetwood (termed melted cheese design in the vid) for my driver. So I set out, along with changing the heinous white paint, to also steal and build in as many of these attractive new cues as possible. The sadly dated vinyl roof was stripped back to bare, and the bumpers and all the signature chromed side skirts were stripped as well. I even had appliances welded to the bottom of the bumpers to imitate the look of molded fascias, and the whole car got mono-painted the same dark gray metallic. All badging and emblems were flushed and replaced with only giant Escalade emblems and an FTSS badge for the trunk.
    Yah about the wheels. Those are probably the most 'personal taste' things on a car, and they didn't throw me off much. I'm not a fan of overly open spokes on virtually any car. But then again I'm not always excited about catching a glimpse of my brake calipers either. A better update for my liking would be either what was on the Sixteen concept or even the ones that come on a CT6. But generally I never care what wheels are on a car since just a matter of 20 nuts and they're so easy to swap out to something I'll like. Anyway, not a bad update for a giant old slab Cady.

    So nice to see you work with cars of this era. American cars had distinction and aspirational design. The color palettes of the early 70's were unfortunate though, as your choice here illustrates. Earth tones and the awful yellowy greens just ruined so many cars. Also, the wheels you chose here are terrible for a sedan; especially a Cadillac.

    Hey I'm a big fan of your chanel and seriously the re-design that you did on the 1996 Chevy Impala SS is just doesn't look right on the front bumper. The proportion on both end corners of the bumper just doesn't match up. Please take a look at it and you will see that I'm right. It would be cool if you could fix it... yes?
