We've had a lot of dogs all our married life. I've always brushed our dogs teeth. Make sure you use a toothbrush specifically made for dogs, as they are extremely soft and won't tear their gums. I've been lucky, my dogs have not seemed to mind. My one Jack Russell does get bad breath, and it's because, for some reason, food gets stuck to his back teeth. He's so smart. He'll jump in his little bed, grab his blanket and uses it to basically clean his teeth. I'm always amazed that he knows to do that, and he does get a lot of that food off. Then, I'll brush his teeth. My other Jack doesn't get bad breath, but she did crack a tooth somehow. No idea how. That tooth did get pulled, because the crack was getting bigger and it was going to be a matter of time, and she'd end up with extreme pain. I - it's expensive. Vets seem to charge so much more. I do get their teeth cleaned at the vet, but not every year. Also, I do not let them give every vaccine under the sun. They do try to convince me. I read a book by a retired vet, and he said to not let a vet give multiple shots at once, it's too big of a shock on their system. I told that to our vet, and she said, "no, that's not true." Whatever. Anyhow, I always space them apart. And I only allow the basics, like distemper, rabies, and the heart worm medication. They work on me, but I stand firm. it's challenging confronting a vet. Good luck with Millie and her teeth.
My dog was definitely an example of too many shots..not good. His vet gave him a combined 8 different inoculations including rabies (6 months early)..they next morning our dog walked out the door and fell over onto the ground. His eyes rolled back and all legs went stiff. It lasted a quick few seconds and thankfully didn't go into full blown seizure. Was it meds..I say 99% YES. My dog is 4 yrs old now and has had his share of rabies shot....but over the past 2 yrs.....he has become anxious and skiddish to noise. His entire demeanor has changed. He was always outgoing and playful. I read an article about a rabies vax study...it said some dogs do become paranoid, anxious and depressed. I don't like to have to think about all those shots I had done to him simply because a vet said they needed it. I know rabies is a state law so what choice do we have. I wish states would stretch out the mandatory amount of yrs for the rabies vax. Most are a 3 year mandate...but studies prove that the rabies vax will last up to 7 yrs. And also why in the world do vets administer the same quantity for my 140 lb mastiff as they do for a toy poodle? Ok, I guess I'm done rambling 😊
I would never have my dogs cleaned . When I had dogs I would give them bones to chew on and it kept their teeth cleaned . I know a woman who constantly had her dogs teeth cleaned The dog didn’t do well and eventually lost hearing & developed anxiety. Now I don’t know if that was the cause , but the dog was fine until she started the cleanings ❤❤❤ PS: It’s shame that people can’t afford pets anymore and dogs have a harder time getting adopted, because people are shamed if they don’t get everything done the vets want you to do .
Getting a toothbrush for dogs is important for their gums. I also used a dog tooth paste that she liked the flavor . If you can try making it a pleasant experience with a treat afterwards 😊 I did brush her teeth every other day, just to get the toothpaste on her teeth to help with the tartar 🎉 Good luck. My vet bills were some how five hundred dollars or more every visit . I wish I had gotten insurance for her. I was told the high cost is to offset the charitable care they give.
I do know some dogs have worse teeth than others. I adopted a dog and her teeth were awful so I spent the money to have them cleaned and some pulled. I thought it would be one and done. A few years later they were bad again. But I didn't do it again, she was 14 yrs old too. Vets have become a racket. We never took our dogs in when I was a kid, only for shots. You made the right decision.
Hi sandra, I had a shih tzu n I brushed his teeth n that was good enough I was afraid of anesthesia..that is a lot of money n ur right that price is ridiculous. I hope u have a wonderful day. God bless ✝️🙏❤️
I'm so glad you wrote about the Vet bills, ridiculous. I always had animals growing up, (like you) and when my kids were growing up. We had a collie dog for years, so sweet and active, we lived next door to a farm & she would crawl under the fence and rounds up the cows, almost everyday, We never had her teeth cleaned and she lived a long life. I just picture myself yelling over the fence & saying you have a dentist appointment. haha! What? Some people love to get ripped off! it comes to a point, that's enough! like you said. I would love to have a pet but it doesn't cost as much to have my teeth pulled and that's bad enough! it's a different world. People are use to throwing away money. anyway i enjoyed the comments I read a few.. luv ya! G~xxxx
Hello Sandra. Some dogs are more prone to getting tarter than others and the vet told me this. When I had my poodle I did get his teeth cleaned twice since he had alot of tarter. My mixed terrier never had to have his teeth cleaned and even the vet said his teeth were great, and he lived to be 15. I think they have dog groomers who will clean them for you for a much cheaper price.
Sandra, my little Molly ( Shih Tzu) she lived to be 16 and she never had dental problems. She ate soft foods a lot from the table, but I made sure she ate Purina dog food ( dried) I think that kept the tarter off her teeth. She thought they were her treats. Always took her for her check ups, and there was never a problem with her teeth.
Your awesome!thank you for your input! Yessss…to many things for making money, money, money….lol! I get it…thank you for the truth! I love my animals…but I know that he/they won’t last for 20- 30 years….when I’m told that they can have another 10 years if their on this certain medication…nahhhh….I’m happy to let nature take over…peace and RIP…to our sweet and precious animals!
I have read that mixing parsley with your dog's food can help improve their breath so may be worth a try? I LOVE that horse painting! Cheers from Canada, Sandy (from hubby's account)
Wow! I love the new arrangement on your fireplace mantle. I’ve been thinking of doing something different with my fireplace so you have inspired me. About poor Millie’s teeth……I’ve never had a dog or cat and none of my parrots had teeth 😂 but I always thought chewing special dog biscuits cleaned dogs’ teeth? Those vet estimates cost more than my first used car @ $350. And, why doesn’t the vet have a waiting room? It can get to 20 deg. below zero where I live and I cannot imagine people sitting in the parking lot with their pets. It’s like waiting for a Big Mac in the parking lot at McDonald’s. True story: My late husband once had a cockatiel that he loved and it seemed to be sick but he didn’t have the heart to talk to the vet so I took Dagwood in to see what was wrong. I kid you not……that vet picked up Dagwood, turned him upside down and proceeded to shake the daylights out of him. I was dumbfounded. The vet explained after that he was trying to remove old food from the bird’s crop. I was just glad my husband did not witness that great bit of doctoring.
I’ve never heard of having to wait in the car. Where I live in Oklahoma, we just walk right in. How much are grooms in your area? They are about 30.00 here, at least for a small dog. I love dogs but probably won’t get another one because of the expenses. Your painting and Indian blanket look so nice near each other. I always love your videos, especially your cooking ones. Sending you and Mr Bill blessings from Oklahoma
Hi, Sandra! I have two dogs, JoJo is a six year old Chocolate Boston Terrier and Layla is a seven and a half year old Boxer. They have never had their teeth professionally cleaned by the vet, but he said their teeth are excellent and there’s no tartar. I think it’s because I have always given them a few of the original Milk Bones every day. I wouldn’t get their teeth cleaned under general anesthesia unless it was done during another surgical procedure due to the risk.
Hi Sandra! That is expensive!! I haven’t had my two dog’s teeth cleaned in a while, but my vet is expensive too. Actually my groomer advertises she brushes dog’s teeth, but I’ve never had her do it. Her grooming services are expensive too. Are there more vets in your area you can call to get a cleaning quote? Good luck brushing Millie’s teeth. Let us know how it goes. Love and Kindness, Teresa
I lost my chiu. In 2017. He was 20. When he was a young dog I had his teeth cleaned once a year at 100.00. I gave him prescription food from vet and a few low sodium green beans food a treat instead of bones, he got canned pure pumpkin ( not pie) for any stomach issues. I trimmed his nails but it only cost $1 a nail. I did everything for him but I took him for his checkups and flea and tick treatment and vaccinations. The vet’s office called when he was due and I took him that day.
Hello Sandy, I'm old school. In my opinion, the cost of pet care has become big business. If you can afford the cost for this or that, knock yourself out. If you don't, do the best you can with what you have. To us, it came down to the basics. Being mindful of shots, vet visits, providing the best food possible, exercise, and the occasional grooming ...My stepson trims his dog's nails, takes him out on long walks, and more recently had to shell out eight grand for surgery (4 the 2nd ×). He's up to his eyes balls in debt.
I love the change you made to the mantle. I thought it was perfect with the painting, but it’s even better. Your viewer has a great eye. I agree with you about Millie. She’s your treasure, but you need to eat too.
When all my past dogs turned 14, my vet would no longer recommend dentals due to older dog’s brains possibly being adversely affected by the anesthesia. Many reports say it can cause memory problems. I just had to put my 17 y/o Pomeranian down on Jan. 7th due to doggy dementia. I certainly wouldn’t want to risk a sudden onset from anesthesia. Only worth the risk if it’s a life or death situation in my opinion. I added a doggy breath freshener to my pets water bowls in the past. Some liked it, some not. 😂
Vet bills have gone through the roof. My daughter took her 5 year old dog to the vet because she was dragging her butt across the floor….the dog not my daughter. We thought Dixie’s anal glands were full but no it was allergies. The vet bill was $294.00. Things have gone through the roof. How can seniors enjoy the company of a pet? It is no wonder so many dogs sit in shelters. So sad.
I’ve had large dogs. Small dogs. Never had teeth cleaned. They all lived to be old. I had a Great Dane that was 16 a dauchshound that was 18. No teeth cleaned. The Vets and dentists make all the money. I’m 72 on a fixed income no way could I afford that. Those veterinarians will rip you off
My 16 yr old cat ended up having all her teeth removed recently for “resorption” problems in all her teeth. This can cause a lot of pain. After she recovered, she eats just fine and no longer has bad breath. It cost $1600, but no more dental cleanings with anesthesia needed.
I recently made an appointment for my 13 1/2 year-old little dachshund/Chihuahua mix, “Dixie”, to have her teeth cleaned. And then they emailed me the estimate. $735 at the low end, and $1900 at the high end. I would have to sign a contract agreeing to this, so I would be on the hook for the high-end price. And you never know what they are doing and whether or not they’re being honest. I had her teeth cleaned two years prior for $415, which I thought was a lot then. Anyway, I canceled the appointment. As long as she’s not in pain I’m not doing it. Simply cannot afford it, and I’ve been wondering lately how much damage the general anesthesia is doing, so this little video of yours, Sandra, is very timely. I learned something recently: There are some dog and cat adoption programs called ‘Seniors for Seniors’ whereby a senior citizen can permanently “foster” a senior pet and the vet bills and the food will be paid for for the life of the pet by the adoption organization. Just when I thought that I would be petless in a few more years, because I can really no longer afford pets, I discover that I won’t have to be!
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 … I don’t know that every pet adoption organization offers that, but I know some do. It’s so hard to find homes for senior dogs and cats homes, so it really is an ideal situation.
Hi Sandra Yes how they justify that price I don't know. I wonder if they think it will encourage people to pay for monthly pet insurance. We had teeth removed for 2 older pets, older pom and chihuahua. In our small town they have a lower cost clinic so it was doable BUT I don't want to do it again. Even the vet said it was chancy because pom has heart murmur. What seems to help a lot is the small kibble and small after meal dog bones. We break them in two and they act as brushing. Some breeds have more dental problems than others. Your house is so cheerful and pretty. Husband and I love your paintings. I hope to get away from too much brown in my house and work toward more cheerful color. God Bless you both. Stay warm and cozy. We having colder temps coming here in Ohio too. Brrrrr. :D
We had 3 dogs, now we are down to 2. Yes I have been told smaller dogs are more suseptible to mouth disease. It is amazing how the estimate pricing for dog dentals can vary greatly. At least that is the way it is in Wisconsin. We changed vets, our pricing has gotten better and so has the service. I would try and get another estimate. Our dogs are older, and therefore, needed a senior panel (blood draw) to make sure they could withstand the anesthesia and procedure. I am not sure how bad your dog's teeth are, but remember they could also be in pain. After each dental I could tell that my dogs felt better, they were more playful and energetic. This has been my experience! We have a mini schnauzer and a mix between a shih tzu and pomeranian.
They said her teeth had tartar on top, but they are in pretty good condition. She is in no pain with her mouth. Her dental bones arrived and she loves them!❤️🐶
Two of my Bichon’s have had dental problems. The first one had a routine teeth cleaning a few pulled came home and bleeding would not stop. Ended up with a blood transfusion for my goldendoodle. His blood count came up but then dropped again. He passed at home. Then my other Bichon 14 now has had all teeth extracted due to periodontal disease. Specialist vet wanted 5000 dollars and a local vet charged 1500.00 dollars. It was a long recovery but he’s doing good now.
I love your new look fireplace…♥️ the Vets here in Canada 🇨🇦 are very expensive as well…and that’s why I no longer have pets..so sad…I spoke to a man at the coffee shop I go too , he has a very small dog…one eye…he told me how his dog was attacked by a large dog…so sad, the Vet charged him 5,800.00 to do the operation…sorry but there is no way I could ever spend that kind of money on a pet…I know their part of the family but I feel the vets play on our emotions…animals are a wonderful gift from God, but greed for money, love of money is the root of all evil…no shame, no guilt, the Veterinarians should be ashamed of this practice of greed…
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 …I agree, many pet owners call their pets …fur babies…Cute but they are not babies…they are beautiful animals… usury is a form of abuse…greed is idolatry…I am so glad to have the Wisdom of the Lord…and smart enough like yourself not to be played…
My little Snowballs teeth are bad and she 14 too old for sedation so Ive been working on them even pulled some when really loose Ive gotten ripped off for years with vet prices DONE!!! More that humans 🤷🏻♀️ Coconut oil (CHEAP & WORKS) and coconut natural toothpaste from chewy 🤷🏻♀️
You're fireplace looks beautiful. Are you doing any painting? I just started on a beach sceenery with flowers. It's been a while since I've painted. I don't blame you as far as not spending all that money on teeth especially as dogs grow older they naturally lose their teeth. Sometimes I think because we as humans who love our fur babies have went to the extreme to the point that we've went the opposite direction. Vet is big money that's for sure. I get a lot of tips from a vet who took a step away from that industry since it's all about the dollar.. I found one of his videos on teethcare and I can share...if you don't mind? Myself, since I have a big dog...140 lbs english mastiff....big dogs come with big bills....I really had no choice but to take out pet insurance. But that's pricey too...around 145 a month...I can’t risk an expensive emergency surgery. But hes had insurance since he was 2 yrs....now to try to get pet insurance for an older dog just wouldn't be feasible since they'll claim a bunch of "preexisting conditions"
@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 here you go...although I probably wouldn't do the teeth scraping like he does...he's has a lot of good information~ ruclips.net/video/lN4c_8gLVcA/видео.htmlsi=EXqXhB7Sy5aKcV7i Kudos on considering your canvas subject...love your other city sceen paintings.
I remember going to the vet, abt 5 years ago, for our cat, Sophia, to get a tooth pulled, and they were going to charge abt $2,000, but we were able to get it lowered to abt $100, it was so unbelieveable.
I use a toothbrush on my dog, though since moving I haven’t cleaned them,I need to get back on it,she doesn’t mind me doing them, just got brush and paste from Amazon… I agree I would definitely not pay that either. Have a fabulous day x
I'm in the same position. My 10 year old Border Terrier has bad breath too. Last time we had his teeth cleaned it was about $350 and that was four years ago. I hate to think what it would be now.
OK Otis is a cairn terrier❤ Toto Wizard of Oz but blonde Wheaton color.. I have been brushing his teeth religiously since he was three months old. He will be eight on the 17th of this month. Two months ago I found this little tooth in the shower, I thought it was mine because he cannot jump over the bathtub. Made an appointment with my dentist my dentist said it isn't any of your crowns, you are fine. And I joked and said maybe it's Otis. Went home and I thought nothing of it. Something made me check his mouth a couple hours later lo and behold he had a front tooth missing. I called my vet and she said don't worry about it sometimes they lose their teeth. Went to go brush his teeth and mind you for the last four months his gums have been bleeding come to find out to top teeth were loose and a bottom tooth also. loose. I called my vet the next day got him in. I stopped brushing his teeth because I didn't want to hurt him. I never thought he had periodontal disease because I've always brushed his teeth I thought that maybe he bruise his mouth somehow. Nope, periodontal disease. Even after brushing his teeth for almost 8 years. they had to pull four teeth, also one that came out. And they said he was missing five more, she said it could've been missing at birth. They have 41 teeth so now he has 31.😢 but I have never noticed that. And I said why did I brush his teeth then? His mouth stunk horribly like something died up in there. And she said you probably saved him two years. So I opted for the surgery because he was going to be eight this month. I have to say though I'm so glad I switched vets 😊my other vet would've cost me double. It cost me $1028 that included the initial visit all the x-ray the pulling and the deep scale cleaning. I still have a hard time brushing his teeth because his gums are still sensitive and they bleed. If he was 14 years old and he wasn't in any pain I would never get this done. Just because of the anesthesia. They recommended teeth cleaning one to two years. He doesn't get people food except for strawberries and blueberries. I feel you made the right decision and don't use a people toothbrush on him. They have one on Amazon that's really good and they have the finger ones. I hope that helps. I buy the radius toothbrush and the radius toothpaste it's very good. Let me know how you made out love and hugs and blessings from me and Otis🐶 Massachusetts and I have to say the Holy Spirit could lead me to his mouth because I would've never noticed it, so I figured that my shower mouth when I took it the tooth was on there. Thank you Holy Spirit🙏
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 it was rather funny it was rather funny I laughed also and so did my Dentist😂😂 I had to have his teeth done just because he does have pperiodontal disease and his teeth was so loose and he was in pain with him I could tell by the way he was eating😢 I'll just use the wisdom God gave me to make my next decision on him❤
If you go online in your area there should be a local pet store that does teeth cleaning for a much lower cost. I live in Southern California and we have vets that do house calls. It makes my life so much easier and it’s not very expensive.
I’m with you! I won’t go into the expenses I have to pay for my dogs but I know what you are feeling. I have never had my dogs teeth cleaned. I wouldn’t think they would put your dog out for that since she is 14?
I heard that they put the dog to sleep to clean their teeth. Not sure how true it is. How do you brush a teacup dogs mouth? I heard there are dental drops that are supposed to clean dog's teeth. Also, how about a baby's or child toothbrush from Dollar Tree? Whatever happen to certain dog bones cleaning teeth?
I have two golden retrievers who I absolutely adore and yikes on that price quoted for teeth cleaning. I take them in each July to the Vet for their annual wellness visit with usually a lab test to check their liver due to the heart worm preventative meds that I have them on as I take them to the ocean several times a year and that could be a high risk area for heart worm infection. The cost is usually around $550 to $600 ( oh it also includes the first 90days of flea n tick meds also) I will continue to do that each year but the price for teeth cleaning is ridiculous.I will brush them myself unless I see them someday they are in pain then I may have to reconsider my options. We had dogs when I was a kid and I don’t ever remember taking them to the vet and the vet in our town was a very close family friend. I know my husband was shocked to know how much the vet cost and grooming.costs were.He said he had dogs all his childhood that lived happily to be 18years old without these vet visits.I do feel a dog definitely should have a wellness visit with the appropriate meds if needed but the teeth cleaning unless the dog is in pain I say a Big No. I know where I take my girls for grooming between grooming appts you can go in just nail clipping and brushing of teeth for a reasonable cost.I don’t know how good of a job they do on teeth brushing so I think I’ll start cleaning myself twice a week to keep them healthy.
Sandra, my 11yr. old Lab had two back teeth pulled 738.00 I coukdnt believe it. We had to have them pulled because they were infected, they said if we didnt it could affect her heart. Well shes like my kid I want to keep her for a long time. I do think alot of stuff is ridiculous, just to make money tho.
@@cindykane6227 …interesting because the same thing is said about people who don’t brush their teeth….that it’s bad for the heart…where I live in Canada 🇨🇦 I paid two hundred dollars last year to get my teeth cleaned…and three hundred for a cracked tooth…yikes…before Covid a cleaning was 150.00…

I think dogs are way over vetted ! Feed her some coconut oil( just a little ) it will help with her breath . I wouldn’t get her teeth pulled unless they were giving her pain .
I’d find a new vet!!! Those prices are incredible. I don’t blame you about brushing Millie’s teeth yourself. We never had our dog’s teeth cleaned and one lived to be 15 years old. We never took our first do to the vet because we couldn’t afford it.
Your dog may be suffering with toothaches. They hide their pain very well. When the vets do a dental its a deep cleaning and scaling not equivalent to just brushing their teeth. We adopted a five year old little terrier two years ago. He had a dental each year with either broken teeth needing removal or extractions of a couple. Yes, it was very expensive but I believe when you have a dog that relies on you for their care you do whatever you can so they aren't suffering. We all know how painful infected teeth are.
Have had dogs all my life (my oldest a husky lived till she was 18) never had any of my dogs teeth cleaned You can get natural drops for bad breath for dogs and their gums which is the real reason behind the bad smell (unless they have a bad tooth then you do have to have it removed) Old dogs should not have their teeth cleaned Sadly people do feed their dogs soft food which is not good especially if you have a small dog Having things to chew on are always nice too Vets are ridiculous On of my dogs had impacted glands and a rupture (it was an emergency) The cost of blood work ,meds, check up and shot was 900.00 I now use something called glandex whih keeps impactation from happening (small eater small dog) I just put on food Its sad that even keeping a pet is becoming out of the reach of so many
I cannot imagine anyone paying that kind of money, I never paid over $200 for dogs teeth cleaning but that wasn't on 8 years ago now I have a French bulldog he's three every time I go to the vet at 2:50 or 3 on the dollars check up in a few yearly shots
I took my cat 🐈 she had her teeth cleaned and a tooth pulled costs me closed to 1,000 but she was having issues eating somehow she lost a tooth not sure how she did that I think it was from another cat chasing her 🤔 it may have been over . She now eats better 😋 she is such a sweetheart 💕 I never had to do this with my dog she chewed on bones that helped they help clean there teeth would get them at a meat store. 🍖 🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹 it's costly they have animal insurance out now.
I put a capful of tooth cleaning liquid from Walmart for my little Pooshon (Toy poodle+Bishon) Like you I would never pay for that. The best toothbrush I tried just fit over tip of my finger. I gave that up. The liquid cleaner keeps Penny's breath fresh and is helping plaque. Hugs to you. Bah-humbug to vet. Do you watch the vet on youtube who basically a naturopath? He has saved me many hundreds of dollars. DR. JONES - VETERINARY SECRETS
Irrespective of the horrendous price that they want to clean the dogs teeth, your dog is 14 years old. There’s no way that I would have Millie’s teeth cleaned because they have to put the dog completely under to do that. For a dog to be under anesthetic at that age is extremely dangerous, far more dangerous than having bad breath. The cost of veterinary medicine has gone completely bonkers. There are very few private vets anymore they are all part of a large conglomerate of veterinary clinics.
❤and you can give your dog her yearly shots..not rabies..the vet has to do that every other year....but go to a farm store that sells cattle antibiotics and they have the dog yearly shot medicine with a needle...you mix them together and fill up the syringe and give the shot under the skin on the back of the neck...its a piece of cake...and a few years ago it was only around 10.00❤Lord Jesus come quickly ❤
I don’t have to wait in my car . Not since covid. My cat will have his teeth cleaned next week! Hiway robbery! I’m doing it, because two cats got kidney disease, which can happen from bad teeth and cardio like humans can get from bad teeth. The vet does labs and cxr first. It is robbery tho, but I felt guilty about their kidney disease. My dog had to have all her teeth removed, she was a rescue , but it was never as high as it is now!
Vets have become ridiculous- I have moved my dogs two times since Covid to new vets due to this same exact horrible service practices. I think I have finally found an old school, vet that owns his own practice.
Please try another vet! No way should you have to sit in your car. How ridiculous! Those prices are unbelievable too. Should be $200-$300. I'm in Texas and our vet is fabulous. We just paid $230 for our dog's teeth to be cleaned. Over the age of 7 a blood test is required which cost about $75 more.

I could not believe your quote! I would do the same thing as you, I would never pay that fee!
Thank you Joan, I was just trying to take good care of my dog, but that was just nonsense!
I would never have my dogs cleaned . When I had dogs I would give them bones to chew on and it kept their teeth cleaned . I know a woman who constantly had her dogs teeth cleaned The dog didn’t do well and eventually lost hearing & developed anxiety. Now I don’t know if that was the cause , but the dog was fine until she started the cleanings ❤❤❤
PS: It’s shame that people can’t afford pets anymore and dogs have a harder time getting adopted, because people are shamed if they don’t get everything done the vets want you to do .
What a great comment, your so right, I thought I would be shamed when I said I'm not paying that!🐶💕
Yes we hate to think we are neglecting our pets…
Getting a toothbrush for dogs is important for their gums. I also used a dog tooth paste that she liked the flavor . If you can try making it a pleasant experience with a treat afterwards 😊 I did brush her teeth every other day, just to get the toothpaste on her teeth to help with the tartar 🎉 Good luck. My vet bills were some how five hundred dollars or more every visit . I wish I had gotten insurance for her. I was told the high cost is to offset the charitable care they give.
I just received the dog toothbrush, waiting for the toothpaste to arrive. Also dental treats, spray for tartar. Thank you for sharing!❤️🐶
Your hair is looking good Sandra 😊
Thank you, I’m pleased with the color and so surprised.❤️
I do know some dogs have worse teeth than others. I adopted a dog and her teeth were awful so I spent the money to have them cleaned and some pulled. I thought it would be one and done. A few years later they were bad again. But I didn't do it again, she was 14 yrs old too. Vets have become a racket. We never took our dogs in when I was a kid, only for shots. You made the right decision.
Thank you, I don't like getting taken advantage of by vets.💕🐶
Hi sandra, I had a shih tzu n I brushed his teeth n that was good enough I was afraid of anesthesia..that is a lot of money n ur right that price is ridiculous. I hope u have a wonderful day. God bless ✝️🙏❤️
Thanks for sharing! God Bless you too. 🙏❤️
People are use to throwing away money. anyway i enjoyed the comments I read a few.. luv ya! G~xxxx
I know! Things are so different now! ❤️
Looks amazing Sandra. ❤
Thank you Sheila! 🥰💕
Christi, thank you for sharing, that was some good information. 🐶💕
It sounds like you took very good care of your Molly! 💕
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.❤️
I have read that mixing parsley with your dog's food can help improve their breath so may be worth a try? I LOVE that horse painting! Cheers from Canada, Sandy (from hubby's account)
Thank you! And thanks for the tip!❤️
I will try that, thank you Sandy! 💕🐶
To funny!😆 I use to have Parakeets and I kept grit in their cage, I think to help digestion.❤️
Diane, thank you for your warm and sweet comment.💕
Thank you for sharing with us!❤️
I will let you know how brushing goes Teresa! 💕🐶
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60Trying to brush Millie’s teeth for the first time would certainly be an interesting vlog. 😳
Can you imagine years ago anyone doing this? Ridiculous!
I know! I know! I thought the same thing!🤣
It’s hard to justify that kind of expense. 😔
I love the change you made to the mantle. I thought it was perfect with the painting, but it’s even better. Your viewer has a great eye.
I agree with you about Millie. She’s your treasure, but you need to eat too.
I agree! I am very happy with the new look.💕
I'm so sorry you had to put your Pom down. Thank you for the good advice, it really helped me.💕🐶
Excellent advice. So sorry for the loss of your pet.

Thank you, I thought some people would think I'm horrible. 💕🐶
So sad.
OK, you gave Mr. Bill and I a laugh! Your right, a senior can't afford a pet that they really would enjoy with the Vet bills so high! 💕🐶
Thanks for my biggest laugh of the day! 🤣
Those veterinarians will rip you off
It is very hard to give a pet the best possible care when money is tight! 😔
My 16 yr old cat ended up having all her teeth removed recently for “resorption” problems in all her teeth. This can cause a lot of pain. After she recovered, she eats just fine and no longer has bad breath. It cost $1600, but no more dental cleanings with anesthesia needed.
Elizabeth, wow, a lot of money, but I'm glad she's doing well now. 💕🐈
I learned something recently:
There are some dog and cat adoption programs called ‘Seniors for Seniors’ whereby a senior citizen can permanently “foster” a senior pet and the vet bills and the food will be paid for for the life of the pet by the adoption organization. Just when I thought that I would be petless in a few more years, because I can really no longer afford pets, I discover that I won’t have to be!
Praise the Lord…♥️
Good to know about foster pets.
Oh, Seniors for Seniors, great idea!❤️
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 … I don’t know that every pet adoption organization offers that, but I know some do. It’s so hard to find homes for senior dogs and cats homes, so it really is an ideal situation.
Hi Sandra
Yes how they justify that price I don't know. I wonder if they think it will encourage people to pay for monthly pet insurance. We had teeth removed for 2 older pets, older pom and chihuahua. In our small town they have a lower cost clinic so it was doable BUT I don't want to do it again. Even the vet said it was chancy because pom has heart
murmur.
Brrrrr. :D
Thank you Donna for sharing. Actually brown is back in! But you can add pops of color to brighten it up. Stay warm!❤️🏠
We quit going to our old vet because it was always $1000….
That is a lot of money!❤️🐶
Wow, that is so sad, I'm so sorry to hear this story, but glad your other Bichon is doing well. 🐶💕
Thank you!!
Shalom from Kentucky!!🩵🩵🩵
It’s the same in Texas for my Boston Terrier 😅
We just have to back off and do what we can ourselves. Hopefully they will notice and try to bring this cost down. 🐶💕
They have some spray that helps the teeth and breathe
I use to have that for my other dog, I think it was called Happy Breath.❤️
Yes, the Vet kept calling me Mom when referring to my relationship with my dog. I felt played.❤️

I did brush Millies teeth many years ago with Coconut oil, she likes the taste and it's healthy for her. I need to start doing that again. 💕🐶
Yes, I do want to paint again. I think possibly a city street scene. Yes, please share the video! Thank you!❤️🐶
@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 here you go...although I probably wouldn't do the teeth scraping like he does...he's has a lot of good information~

I remember going to the vet, abt 5 years ago, for our cat, Sophia, to get a tooth pulled, and they were going to charge abt $2,000, but we were able to get it lowered to abt $100, it was so unbelieveable.
Oh my goodness, as long as you will pay the extravagant prices they will keep asking it!

Wow! It’s not just the teeth cleaning it’s all the add on stuff.❤️
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 Oh I see. I'm in New Zealand, not the US.
Great story Faithy, thank you for sharing, you did make me laugh out loud about the tooth in the shower! 💕🐶
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 it was rather funny
it was rather funny I laughed also and so did my Dentist😂😂 I had to have his teeth done just because he does have pperiodontal disease and his teeth was so loose and he was in pain with him I could tell by the way he was eating😢 I'll just use the wisdom God gave me to make my next decision on him❤
Millie is eating fine, so no reason for me to spend that money. ❤️
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 I totally agree! Otis's situation was different. Plus at Millie's age there is no way I would do that🥺
If you go online in your area there should be a local pet store that does teeth cleaning for a much lower cost. I live in Southern California and we have vets that do house calls. It makes my life so much easier and it’s not very expensive.
Thanks for the tip!❤️🐶
I’m with you! I won’t go into the expenses I have to pay for my dogs but I know what you are feeling. I have never had my dogs teeth cleaned. I wouldn’t think they would put your dog out for that since she is 14?
It is just not worth the risk for my Millie.💕🐶
I heard that they put the dog to sleep to clean their teeth. Not sure how true it is. How do you brush a teacup dogs mouth? I heard there are dental drops that are supposed to clean dog's teeth. Also, how about a baby's or child toothbrush from Dollar Tree? Whatever happen to certain dog bones cleaning teeth?
Maybe a soft child’s toothbrush . ❤️
I have two golden retrievers who I absolutely adore and yikes on that price quoted for teeth cleaning. I
take them in each July to the Vet for their annual wellness visit with usually a lab test to check their liver due to the heart worm preventative meds that I have them on as I take them to the ocean several times a year and that could be a high risk area for heart worm infection.
The cost is usually around $550 to $600 ( oh it also includes the first 90days of flea n tick meds also)
I will continue to do that each year but the price for teeth cleaning is ridiculous.I will brush them myself unless I see them someday they are in pain then I may have to reconsider my options.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree with you, we can't always afford everything.❤️🐶
Sandra, my 11yr. old Lab had two back teeth pulled 738.00 I coukdnt believe it. We had to have them pulled because they were infected, they said if we didnt it could affect her heart. I’d find a new vet!!! Those prices are incredible. I don’t blame you about brushing Millie’s teeth yourself. We never had our dog’s teeth cleaned and one lived to be 15 years old. We never took our first do to the vet because we couldn’t afford it.
Yes, we only went to the Vet for emergencies!❤️
Your dog may be suffering with toothaches. They hide their pain very well. When the vets do a dental its a deep cleaning and scaling not equivalent to just brushing their teeth. We adopted a five year old little terrier two years ago. He had a dental each year with either broken teeth needing removal or extractions of a couple. Yes, it was very expensive but I believe when you have a dog that relies on you for their care you do whatever you can so they aren't suffering. We all know how painful infected teeth are.
The vet looked at all her teeth and they were fine. I can’t chance putting a 14 yr old dog under anesthesia when she has no problem. ❤️
Have had dogs all my life (my oldest a husky lived till she was 18) never had any of my dogs teeth cleaned You can get natural drops for bad breath for dogs and their gums which is the real reason behind the bad smell (unless they have a bad tooth then you do have to have it removed) Old dogs should not have their teeth cleaned Sadly people do feed their dogs soft food which is not good especially if you have a small dog Having things to chew on are always nice too Vets are ridiculous On of my dogs had impacted glands and a rupture (it was an emergency) The cost of blood work ,meds, check up and shot was 900.00 I now use something called glandex whih keeps impactation from happening (small eater small dog) I just put on food Its sad that even keeping a pet is becoming out of the reach of so many
Thanks for sharing, I wrote down Glandex! 💕🐶
I cannot imagine anyone paying that kind of money, I never paid over $200 for dogs teeth cleaning but that wasn't on 8 years ago now I have a French bulldog he's three every time I go to the vet at 2:50 or 3 on the dollars check up in a few yearly shots
I agree, I just had to walk away from that estimate and do something myself. 💕🐶

That is a lot of money, but they know they have us.❤️
I got doggie toothpaste and little toothbrush. Works great
Thank you, that’s what I’m going to do.❤️
I know exactly how you feel. The Vets are charging way too much
This only means less homes for animals since so many cannot afford these prices.

It's all so ridiculous, the prices that is. 🐶💕
I would NOT allow a vet to put a 14 year old dog under general anesthesia! No! Give her the green dental chews regularly and she will be fine. ❤
I ordered some dental chews for her. 💕
Thank you for sharing all the good information!❤️🐶
Everything is ridiculously over priced
So true!❤️
Irrespective of the horrendous price that they want to clean the dogs teeth, your dog is 14 years old. There’s no way that I would have Millie’s teeth cleaned because they have to put the dog completely under to do that. For a dog to be under anesthetic at that age is extremely dangerous, far more dangerous than having bad breath. The cost of veterinary medicine has gone completely bonkers. There are very few private vets anymore they are all part of a large conglomerate of veterinary clinics.
Exactly
Thank you, that is one of the reason's I'm not letting them do it. 💕🐶
Thank you for sharing that tip! ❤️
We are good to our dogs, I've always taken care of them and loved them. But there comes a point where enough is enough. 🐶💕
Paid once for my dogs teeth. ( cleaning) Hundreds! A month or so later her her teeth & breath were the same!!!Never again.!
You made us laugh France! Thanks for sharing! 🐶💕
Vets have become ridiculous- I have moved my dogs two times since Covid to new vets due to this same exact horrible service practices. I think I have finally found an old school, vet that owns his own practice.
Like someone stated the elderly need the companion of a dog, but how can they afford keeping one with these ridiculous prices?
Please try another vet! No way should you have to sit in your car. How ridiculous! Those prices are unbelievable too. Should be $200-$300. I'm in Texas and our vet is fabulous. We just paid $230 for our dog's teeth to be cleaned. Over the age of 7 a blood test is required which cost about $75 more.
There is a breakdown of the bill at the end of the video. I think the cleaning is $60, then they start tacking in all the rest.❤️
